The Sewer Men of Mumbai

  • Every day Mumbai produces enough sewage to fill 4,500 Olympic-size swimming pools. Despite the many modern comforts of Mumbai, the sewer system is outdated and is still cleaned by hand. At least once a year the manhole covers are removed and a worker is lowered down with only a helmet for protection. The worker then scoops out the sludge consisting of both human and industrial waste that has been collecting in the pipes. It is not uncommon for Indian sewer workers to become ill or die from the toxic fumes. Indian Parliament recently passed a law in an effort to improve these poor working conditions, but many are doubtful that the new measures will make a difference.
Here is the story of the sewer men of Mumbai.

We should use inmates from jails to do this work as penance for their crimes. Better than letting them watch TV all day and fight each other and the guards. I guarantee you crime rates would go down !

The reason they are poor is becoz they have been exploited by the rich for centuries for their labor in exchnage for a minimum wage that keeps them poor forever. Why would the rich want them in a perpetual poverty? Cheap labor. Voltaire once said: the comfort of the rich depends on the abundant supply of the poor!

They need to outlaw the cast system. These sewer workers are only the symptom of a bigger problem. Replacing the workers with more modern equipment will put most of them out of work, and giving them better protection won't solve the main problem. it'll be like giving pain killers to someone who has cancer, which is better than nothing but good enough.

There is plenty of money in India. But as long as people are willing to go down in the hole and get filthy to do the dirty work, why would politicians spend any money on modern equipment? Some guy wants to earn a living and take the risk, the politicians see it as being way cheaper than buying vacuum trucks or waterjet blowers. They know that if the truck breaks down (and they do) it will need to be fixed, pay for maintenance and new parts... but if the worker gets sick or worse, just find someone else who is starving and needs the money. As long as people will keep taking the risks and go down the hole, why would politicians spend money on buying machinery?

Manual scavenging, the living testament of caste discrimination in India still exists despite the country’s legislative and policy efforts to end it. On December 2, 2021, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment informed the Rajya Sabha that 42594 out of 52098 identified manual scavengers in India are from SCs, 421 from STs and 431 from OBCs. The numbers depict that sanitation in India is linked to a caste-based structure, that most people involved in the manual cleaning of sewages, dry toilets, septic tanks, etc. are from the lower castes of the society.

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and this is done everyday here.
There is safety laws that protect workers from this here and it is the actual workers who do not care bout themselves and refuse to work safe.
I saw this video an read the comments and it made me laugh.
The Government, unions and workers know about this here and do not care one bit.
Once again, I repeat, I am in Canada, which is supposed to be different than other countries and this is done here, every single day.

if they are educated well about hygiene and something like that, there's no one going into the sewer with no gears, just in bare body. it's kind of problem that's attributed to lack of education and ignorance.

Actually, shame on Hinduism. Therein lies the problem. The caste consciousness has totally destroyed the notion of dignity of labour within the people. When it comes to public cleanliness, the people have no etiquettes because for millenia, such jobs have been reserved only for the outcaste 'untouchables' and today the general public has a preconceived notion that this is not their job. All thanks to the Hindu 'holy' scriptures (or rather manmade lawbooks of religiously sanctioned human oppression). - Coming from a former untouchable. Google 'B.R.Ambedkar'.
