I am the great-great granddaughter of Col Eldridge, and was thrilled to come across this video posting. I currently still own a 20% stake in the beautiful Eldridge Hotek in downtown Lawrence. So very proud of my familial heritage in the Civil War era.
Oh my gosh Julie, thanks for coming here. You have an amazing family legacy!! I’ve always been fascinated with the Eldridge family, and I always stare at that family picture. I’ll bet you might even have the original. I’m particularly intrigued with Mary, She was beautiful - and so sad that she died so young. Do we know what happened? I’m so curious. If you know -I would love to share it in a post. My email is facesforgottentoday@gmail.com. I don’t often see the replies here as there are so many comments to try to keep up with 😊 The Eldridge Hotel is a fantastic place, a landmark of important history, and in such a vibrant and fascinating town. I already miss getting back to Lawrence. If I may add one thing: When I first came to the Eldridge, before the remodeling - the picture hung above the fireplace …as it should. The remodeling is nice and all, but when they moved the picture down into that side corridor, I was really disappointed. That’s speaking also as an architect. It’s rightful place is over the fireplace. Anyway- we were happy to cover your family’s plot at Oak Hill. I had found the graves a couple of years ago. I always stop by your family there to pay my respects. Anyway-Will always love Lawrence. Just imagine going on a time machine and meeting your relatives? Holy cow. Thanks for stopping by!!!
@@FacesoftheForgotten I do not have the original. I suspect maybe one of my aunts or uncles may. Thank you for the kind words, and I have always been incredibly proud of our heritage through the generations. Our family has accomplished so many great things over the years.
My great great grandmother rode through Lawrence just before Quantrills raiders entered the town to warn everyone. She barely escaped afterward, the Kansas City Star wrote up a really nice article of her exploit in 1947.
I live in Lawrence, KS. Born and raised. So many people don't understand how importance this event was in regards to the civil war. Wish I knew you were in town. I would have loved to connect you with some Lawrence locals. Thanks for sharing this story.
Briton is spot on with his background research and delivery. I am so impressed with him when he takes a knee and touches the headstone and ground where the deceased are buried. Briton definitely has respect. What an awesome young man he is. Please keep making more videos with him. I am hooked. This was a sad story of the raids and how many men and boys were killed by Quantrell.
My 2X great-grandfather reportedly rode with Quantrill. He later wound up in Hunt County, TX. When his 2nd wife heard about his activity, she refused to be buried in the same cemetery with him.
What a very beautiful family Ron and Brittan....The Mother and Daughters were absolutely stunning. It is so tragic that the Mother passed away so young. Thank you both for sending your respects for this lovely family.
The US Civil War had many cruel and inhumane events. The more I study and learn about these events the more I find that people do evil and cruel things. Every war seems to show us this fact. But what is amazing is that the happens over and over again. Thank you for the vlog
Born here in Lawrence. When I was in Highschool it was the most overpopulated school in the state 1997-98. The students voted and wanted to call the new school, Free state High school (now), The Quantrill's Raiders Highschool. Probably so the football team would be the Raiders. I remember a teacher being appalled, as was I. Kids are big dummies. Thanks for the video
I really respect the way you help keep the memories of people sometimes long gone and often victims of murder alive. I have always loved roaming cemeteries! Doing my roaming vicariously through your channel right now.
As you were telling that story of how so many men and boys were killed, all I could think of is how many women probably lost everyone that day, that must have been awful, thanks for the walk, stay save.
Another great Sherlock Holmes and Mr Watson walk I'm a big civil war buff so I really appreciate it that when I appreciate anything you and Britain do because I enjoy the history that you bring from it and memory the forgotten on top of it thank you. 🇺🇲☮️🦃
A beautiful monument to the victims of Quantrill's bloodbath. Men and boys killed, and many widows made. Ron and Brittan you gave us so much information on this and what happened to the town, a wealth of knowledge. Rest in peace to the Eldridge family and those who lost their lives on that harrowing day.
I came to Lawrence as a immigrant in 1952 I love history and the Lutheran church sponsored us I was surprised when I learned how much History Lawrence has to come and live in such a historic town of all the towns in America I got to live in Lawrence and eaven today you will find Lawrence mentioned on TV or in the news
it’s like you can feel there spirits such a horrible tragedy i can’t even imagine onlookers seeing this slaughter may they be at peace another great video
Dad always told us about this. We all went to KU. Dad said Quantrill scalped everyone. Gee, Ron and Britton, thank you so much I know Dad is watching from Heaven and thanks you too
I had to check this out because Lawrence, KS., isn't that big of a town, but in 1863 the population was 1,650. According to what I read 190 males were massacred, which means 10-12% of the town's population was wiped out back then.
My maiden name is Boulware. It is rare, but a gift so rare, that Boulwares are able to find one another in this world. What are the odds you would come across one of my probable kin? Boulware originated in France, and migrated to England, then across the big water, according to my sources. I live in Alabama. The family has been in America since well before the American Revolution. Thank you for pointing that out. I feel a sudden urge to do more family research.
Very interesting video. I am starting to enjoy watching these and going to the next channel after. I also would like to know where I can order a purple sweat shirt like that.
My dad's family were southerners from Missouri (via Virginia) and my mom's were northerners from Kansas (originally Massachusetts); it's very possible that they clashed, along the Kansas-Missouri border, during the Civil War. Thanks for the intriguing video, keep up the great work.
I love watching history videos that start roughly a hundred yards from my back door. I live by this Cemetery and there is so much history in there as well as Lawrence Kansas. Rock Chalk Jayhawk
Rest in peace everyone. My opinion: as for the murders of all those innocent people 🌸, well let's just say no peace shall be found for them. Stay safe Sirs & everyone
4:58 The old tree as you are walking up the hill. So picturesque. 5:15 I wondered where the term came from. Very interesting. 6:00 So interesting how all these places and names tie together. Thank you for telling this story. I feel like I have a good understanding now of the history. 6:15 So many died. Huge area there where they are buried around their monument. So sad how many died. Pretty monument. Hard to read the letters on the side away from the daylight. I'm glad you read that to us. I couldn't make some of it out easily either. 8:21 Thank you for taking us on this tour of the cemetery and telling us this history that we wouldn't have heard about otherwise. 9:30 Always heard the name (from the name on the hotel and it being haunted) but hadn't heard the story about the family. So interesting to hear their life story. 12:24 As stated in the live chat by so many, I cannot believe that they are so famous locally and have only this little stone of a family member to mark the entire family plot. Seems like the town would do one family marker. I think because up until the last 5 years, people have not visited graves and cemeteries except when they had a loved one to bury at/after a funeral. I am betting with the uptick in cemetery visits because of all the stories you tell and others, that the city may consider the significance of marking their grave.
Its a bit more complicated than that , It was retaliation for the previous week imprisoned family members of Quantrill raiders were killed in a dbl story prison collapse. The Union army jailed close relatives of Quantrill's raiders > 2 doz girls /young woman ( all under 20 ) locked up under guard in a 2 story house > they complained that they could hear and feel > back corner of the house was being dug away THEY FELT UNSAFE and on 13th August the building collapsed killing several and injuring many. Bloody Bill Andersons sister was killed and also a niece had her legs crushed > rumour soon spread that the guards caused the collapse by deliberately undermining the foundations . ( years after the war an enquiry found most likely the fault was builders renovating the 2 story house ) Both Quantrill and bloody Bill Anderson didn't survive the war !
