What's the difference between a "direct-backlit" lightbox (or menuboard) and an "edgelit" one? Blue River Digital goes in-depth to compare the two technologies!
people often mistake direct led with full array, and the difference between those is huge. d-led is not capable of producing very good local dimming, which can in the end give you horrible ghosting. and if you turn it off (which is not even always possible), than the advantage of d-led goes away (compared to edge led). full array is definitely the best since it has more lights that can be turned on or off, but is much more expensive. so if you really wanna spend some more money on tv, its best to just go for oled/qled. if not, edge and d-led are kinda very similar and depend on how good the panel is. for example, samsung is one of the best tv brands, even without having d-led in its entry/mid level class tvs. so, just get whatever has good ratings, or save money and go big. edit: video is now 5 years old, so the things kinda changed. edge lits got much better in what they do. still, if youre not on a budger -> qled / oled.
edge lit is better for my eyes. instead of light facing at you eventually irritating your eyes, you have lights facing away from from you. thats just me. best tv i ever liked was edge lit. sony 55802A 2013
Wrong This direct backlit in stripes (like in the video) has a big disadvantage. On rare occasions there is a homogene image , for example a grey wall, and the camera moves up, or down - then you will see the different darker and brighter lines of the direct backlit stripes on your TV. You will not see that on normal camera moves left or right, as the stripes are horizontal. I see the light stripes on my Hisense TV and it is kind of distracting. It is rare of course, but usually 2 or 3 times during a movie the camera moves upward. You will not see that on a edge lit tv as the brightness is more uniform. End.
DLED consumes less power then ELED. No. Of LED not a matter. In case ELED , all LED are always on even in dark scene for which black is grey in ELED Backlighting Display. DLED has local dimming. In case you are watching movies it's upper and lower row leds are off. The particular led is on which is required. Hence Contrast ratio is better in direct LED backlit display technology.
Right now I got the Samsung S24E310 which is direct-backlit and very cheap. On the downside It has terrible controls and response time but the image quality is very good considering the low pixel-pitch and RGB color gamut.
Just bought an edge lit TV, I have to cancel this piece of garbage. Q60T. I hate how companies are selling crap. There are too many things to know when purchasing a TV it is mind-numbing. All because they are greedy.
ive been using a edgelit tv for about a year and didnt even notice till i just looked it up. it is very bright. so dont think it wont get bright enough because they do. now looking for a new tv. now have a choice between an, mva edge led or ips direct led. now i know my tv is edge led i definately think the benefit of having a va over ips lcd is worth it over the direct led.
Very nice video. Learnt the difference. I have a question, reviewer said that power consumption varies in direct-backlit from edgelit, can you tell me by how much?
Raja - the difference in power consumption between an Edgelit and a Direct Backlit lightbox depends on the display size of the lightboxes in question; however, there is a crude yet possibly adequate method for calculating the difference within a reasonable margin. Consider that each LED strip in a direct-backlit model consumes approximately 1/2 to 2/3 the power* of one LED strip in an Edgelit model. Then, if you know the power consumption of either the Edgelit or the Direct Backlit unit, and if you can determine how many LED strips are installed in each of the 2 models, you can do some quick arithmetic to learn how much more power the Direct Backlit lightbox will consume. Tip: Edgelit lightboxes almost always contain exactly 2 LED strips, one each running along the longer 2 of the 4 edges (sometimes all 4 edges of an edgelit model contain an LED strip, but this is rare). Direct-Backlit lightboxes usually contain LED strips running vertically (occasionally horizontally), and these strips are usually spaced 2" to 8" apart, depending on the model. *Also, the reason that LED strips in an edgelit lightbox consume more power than those in a direct-backlit one, is because edgelit lightboxes usually use higher-density and/or higher-brightness LED lamp strips to achieve adequate display brightness across the graphic face, since the light transfer from source to spectator is indirect and therefore more subject to diminished intensity as it travels. Can anyone make a list of available Direct-Backlit PC Monitors on the market?

what about blackcolor? this video is not full!
Look... if somebody wants the best picture homogenity the only way is direct led, instead of a clouding image when dark scenes comes! ;)
I can see the horizontal lines of the LED stripes on my direct backlit TV. In scenes when the camera moves up or down. So...nothing is perfect
Now I know why I see what I see on my TCL 65s405 edge lit.
you did not mention a thing about black reproduction, which is better in direct led.
Just bought an edge lit TV, I have to cancel this piece of garbage. Q60T. I hate how companies are selling crap. There are too many things to know when purchasing a TV it is mind-numbing. All because they are greedy.
