In this video I talk about camera technology vs creativity and where I think your main focus should be. And how I learned from high end stereo equipment that some people are more interested in the technical performance of the audio gear than enjoying the music they listen to!

great words ::: sometimes I like to grab an old few megapixel digicam and make a nice photo with that instead of my modern expensive camera

Excellant! Periodically I leave the A7rV at home and take my Lumix GX85 with kit lens. I called it my reminder camera. Brooks Jensen (Lenswork) says, "buy someone a piano and they are not a pianist, but buy someone a camera and they think they are instantly a photographer".

What should be in a photo? Like how can you tell a complete story with a single photo?😅
I think storytelling is to be interpreted as the ability to raise questions rather than giving answers. So the image should not give answers - or at least not in full. Something should be left open for interpretation and the curiosity. That said, storytelling is easier done with a series of images than a single image.

Hope the storm does not sweep you away and we see a video next week! I cannot agree more with you regarding spending energy/time reviewing equipment. Photographers should spend their time optimizing the number of photos they take, post-process and review (by themselves or with an audience). *That* is the virtuous feedback loop for improving one's photography! 😊
Thank you Max! My house is still here! Reviews and feedback are perhaps some of the most important aspect of being a photographer - reading the book "the meaning in the making" by sean tucker underlined the importance of this part for me.
You said this very well. I've been buying old manual focus lenses lately to do something different. Some of my favorite recent photos have been with my D3s and 1980/90s lenses... not knocking mirrorless nikons at all... I have a Z6ii, I find that it's too easy to take photos with. Sometimes modern conveniences can be a hinderance to my learning experience. Especially if I'm shooting casually for the pleasure and moment.
Thank you for sharing Nik! I have just bought the "modern" 105mm macro lens for my Z6ii, but find that my good old 100mm Tokina on my D750 is much more fun to shoot with! So yes, going forward technically is certainly not the same as going forward in terms of shooting experience and enjoying what you do!
@frederikboving there is nothing wrong with older lenses! Obviously these big RUclips influencers need to make new content about new things. (Not knocking you at all here 🙂) the camera world is like the hi fi audio world. I used to sell gear as one of my first jobs. Tannoy, McIntosh, Argon, Marantz, Arcam etc... 😂 it's just as bad back and forth arguing in that whole world as it is in the camera world.
I got myself a birthday present last month. The Venus Optics Laowa 35mm f/0.95 for the Z6ii. Every review I've seen about that lens has been so nitpicky about its sharpness. Well let me just say it's been living on my Z6ii since then. It's so unique and fun to shoot. The photos are unlike any other lens I own and have their own beautiful character. It's a slightly difficult lense to shoot with but that's part of the fun. I can't afford an $8000 58mm Nikon noct f/0.95 lens...that doesn't auto focus either mind you. At $650 usd the Laowa is doing 90% as much for 12x less the cost. That's just one of a few examples of "diminishing returns"... my favorite lens on my D850 is the old Nikon 28mm f/2 manual focus lens 😅 it was $150 and I love it!

I have to say that for me personally, gear has something to do with the images I make. I could not make the same images with my phone as I make with my d750. Sure, I could frame it in the same way, but the ability to control exposure and depth of field wouldn't be the same. My creativity, my vision, is only realized if my gear can do what I need it to do. So I do "need" a certain level of quality in my gear. But do I need to buy the latest and greatest in gear? I don't think so. And you, Frederik, take beautiful photos with just your phone.
Thank you for your kind words Jamie! I am pretty sure that even though you "only" had the camera in your phone, you would be out and about taking pictures of musicians like you do. And being pretty good at it! And finding ways to compensate for the lack of range on the lens in the phone. I cannot imagine that your creative voice would be any different. Just saying. One guys opinion, etc.
It would have to be a pretty awesome phone, to be able to ‘touch’ the D750 in image quality, Jamie. Good comment! Your D750 is still a very viable camera today. Embrace it and Happy Shooting!
@@frederikboving Thank you Frederik, I really appreciate that. We are our own worst critics, of course, so what I might consider a lackluster photo might be viewed by others as pretty good. The best camera is the one you have with you!
@@georgedavall9449 I didn't even get my d750 until 2021, by which time it was probably seen as "old" from a tech standpoint. But it is full-frame, and doubles my low-light capabilities from my previous camera, a d7000. The images are fantastic, and the color is too. I wish I had a second one just in case anything happens to this one!

“GearHeads!” There is one or more in every crowd, and in most avenues of Life. This is coming from a ‘borderline’ one myself, I’m afraid!? 🙄 Camera makers thrive on this, and a good portion of RUclips content is geared ( no pun ) towards this as well! Take ‘Ordinary Filmmaker,’ ( I like Simon!). Peter Gregg, ( I like Peter! ) Tony Northrop ( not a fan ) or any number of other ’reputable/ non reputable content creators, and they share the same premise; Hypothesize/ predict on what new gear is coming and when! It’s the old, “You just have to get a new Camera/lens, and elevate your Photography!” Marketing 101.
I do think that the love of one’s gear is a part of Photography, to an extent? Some only see/use cameras as tools, to get the shot, and move on. Others obsess over their equipment, and focus (no pun) too much on the technical aspects of their gear, and agonize over what to use, etc etc, and then there are the majority of us (I believe) that are a mixture of both? I know I’m guilty of being part Gear Head, but more on the Photography side.
‘Alex Blaze’ made a great comment below. That’s why I keep my D200/300/and beloved D700 around! I will take them out, and they are slower, not feature laden, so I have to take the time to think and maybe, just maybe, create a good image! And these older “Dinosaur” cameras are quite capable of producing excellent images! Whilst your segment about the ‘New Camera’ elevating one to the top of the Mountain was very humorous, its not too far from the truth! Cameras today do so much, the Photographer almost only needs to ‘point and shoot?!’ Mirrorless cams preview the exposure, and overlay the histogram in the viewfinder, and finds the animals eyes at 50 yards, etc etc, sheesh. Where is the challenge in all that? But I digress…
I get the ‘Audiophile’ in you, Frederik! 😊 Made your own Pre Amp, wow, impressive. I still LOVE music, but my stereo days are long behind me. I was heavy into Home Theatre at one point, but now I mainly listen to Jazz and Pop, and Oldies, through my JBL Bluetooth speakers, off RUclips!

Thank you George! Always a pleasure to read your posts! Yes, I guess most photographers have a leg in each camp, but some have a longer leg in one camp than the other (if that makes any sense 😌). My wife took one look at my audio gear many years ago, and then I knew it was out the window with that hobby - the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) was simply not reached for my poor loudspeakers! So now it is my iPods that play my music 🙂- all the best George!

Hi what about the bokha
Most experienced photographers know that bokeh is more dictated by distance to subject + distance to background than anything else. So they can get creamy bokeh with not-so-fast lenses. It really is mainly about the photographer.
Great video! Some of my best shots were with my first camera: a Nikon D40 (6 MP) and the 18-55 cheap kit lens! I didn’t think about aperture or shutter speed or iso , I just kept it in P mode because I didn’t know any other way when I first started. I just focused on composition and getting up really early in the morning to travel and be there when the morning sun was giving the best light. I looked for situations and scenes I thought would make a good photo and then I just framed the shot and hit the shutter button.
Ironically, 10 years later, now that I’m so well versed in how to get the best out of my ever-growing array of camera gear I find myself spending too much time and energy in figuring out what camera/lens/filter/flash/etc I should use and at what aperture/shutter speed/iso instead of just grabbing whatever camera and lens is closest and getting out there and shooting! I’m determined to remedy that mindset in 2023!

The zen Buddhists have a saying that to draw the bamboo, first you have to learn EVERYTHING about the bamboo, then you need to forget everything you have learned and first then you are ready to draw the bamboo! I think it is about reaching a state where you are unconscious competent in order to excel at your art. Sounds like you are ready to forget all you have learned about photography and just start shooting! So all the best in 2023!
