Thank you for this - I always did like this series... good to see it again. I was only about 14 when this aired but it was always unmissable Saturday early evening telly! 😀I did spot Maggie Clegg from the Coronation Streets we are currently enjoying on your channel - all great stuff.
If I was in a car crash, a 1974 Mk1 Ford Escort estate wouldn't be the car I'd want to be in. Those things needed a lot of beefing up to make them crashworthy for racing / rallying etc. Plus it would have been 10 years old at this point and likely held together by the paint. It's not explained how Williams's parents found Mrs. Curtis so quickly. Not many Curtises in the Hartley phone book, probably. Or perhaps they just wandered the streets until they found a big red car with a huge dent in it. The whole story is presented with more grey areas than a similar tale would be these days. Society is far less tolerant of drink driving than it was 40 years ago, and Williams would be harshly dealt with by a 2024 police show. If he somehow got off, there would no doubt be poetic justice by the end. David Allister (Sgt. Jackson from Softly Softly : Task Force) as the prosecuting counsel doing one the many lawyer roles he played in the 70s and 80s. He DID do supercilious very well, I think. Irene Sutcliffe was only 11 years older than Del Henney. I'm not sure she looks quite old enough to be the mother of a man who is clearly nearly 50.
@@SteveHarris-nv9iy Not seen that for many years (have the DVD though). Quite a performance as I recall "I lack your lofty DETACHMENT!" etc. Possibly the only way to perform Pip & Jane Baker dialogue.
Yes different character of course. He was one of those actors who liked working on the series obviously. And took several parts over its run.Alan Lake was another who played 3 different characters over its course.

I would be very interested to know which Constabulary's allowed their female sergeants and inspectors to wear lovely knee boots with skirt based uniforms??.
What the series needs is some crazy benefactor GIVES like 30 big powerful American cars to villigers so now police have to contend with 58 Impalas and 73 Olds 98's, Big Block 1970 Corvette's, '66 Buick Riviera's '55 Chevys with Cadillac engine swaps, a '59 El Dorado, Some Plymouth GTX...all in one confined space. Then you'd have a show worth watching. 😅😅😅
If authentic seems their DUI laws were deficient. In Norway the law is that when you are involved in an accident, or have driven in such a way that could reasonably give cause to an investigation, you must refrain from drinking afterward. So taking a few drinks wont give an alibi against drunk driving. It would just count extra.
Even for the early 1980s the attitudes seen in this story seem very odd, out of step with the times. The way this is written and presented on screen is so strange, 'old fashioned' isn't quite the word... it's more like the people who wrote and put it to screen were anti-establishment, and resentful of both Police, and favoured stopping drunks from being hassled by Police. It's not the best example of Juliet Bravo. Not the best of Ann Cartaret's Kate Longton either. But having not seen anything of this show in many many years I did enjoy the feel of it nevertheless. They really don't make these sort of shows anymore, Alas...
I think it depends on the writers. And what they are aiming to say.I find the speech at the end a bit much in her office. There are people who can help when you need it stuff.Bit American, still enjoyable stuff.
@@bjornlangoren3002 An older story of Juliet Bravo?.No this is an original script. It ran 6 series, long enough. Not so long they had to recycle scripts already done though.
To each their own I find Anna Carteret more likeable as the Inspector than Stephanie Turner. And the series generally used same writers in both eras.So don't agree all later scripts are rubbish at all frankly.

@@paulkenney4021 Yes though episodes are very good.Pity they didn't do more seige and hostage plots over the 6 series.Stuff like Z Cars and Task Force used that as a regular plot to good effect.
Remember when mr Williams was a flying squad DCI in second or third episode of this series lol competent character actors get around 😊
I must remember not to have the same actor guest starring in 2 rapidly following episodes in future. To save confusion.
Thank you for sharing this fascinating episode, excellent acting.
In a coincidence I have also watched Season 1 Episode 3 today where Derek was Sgt Cole a vegan teetotal, no nonsense London copper.
He was a vegan but did he not have some pints at Joe's do?.Not seen in a while but thought he did.Different part than later one certainlym
@@SteveHarris-nv9iy .. Him and Joe got into a barny because he wouldn’t have a drink.
I loved that one!
That was a good episode!
Indeed!
More episodes would be greatly appreciated, if you possibly have the ability to provide them...! 😎😉👍
Love this episode!❤

Yea Maggie Clegg! And I’m sure Derek used to play for Weatherfield County and had a dalliance with Irma Barlow. He liked a tipple then.

Living at home with his parents when he is like 35-40. 😂
I think he's going through a divorce to add to his woes.Think that was mentioned during episode. So saving money at home.

@@SteveHarris-nv9iy by older story, i mean a story that inspired the episode. Maybe a court case or newspaper article from the 60s.
