My childhood school commute! Those Cummins engines sounded so dramatic and musical to my ear, I miss this sound so much, and glad to find it again after 20 years!
Wow! Wonderful memories of going to Croydon back in the 1970s. My stop was at the Headley Drive end of Frimley Close to George Street. I moved from New Addington back in 1979 so never saw the tram link, I've visited since though. I reckon 1970s New Addington was better than it is now.
It's a reminder of how noisy buses were in those days, even on the upper deck furthest from the engine. Not just the engine noise either but the rattling noises. Metrobuses only had three gears (I briefly took lessons on them; didn't get to the test and I drive trucks now). I also notice that the new-style bus stops had started to appear -- instead of just the LT logo and sometimes the route numbers, you now have the stop name, direction and always the bus routes. The buses are a lot more uniform now; back then, you still had the different liveries for the post-privatisation companies like London & Country (although they had already been sucked into Arriva and the rebranding had already begun).
That was fun reliving old memories, especially seeing how Croydon's Tramlink service has now changed the typography of the town. My Dad used to drive Route Masters, DMS, Metro Buses and Olympians out of Streatham MCW was always my favorite, couldn't stand Olympians at first, but began to like them once metro buses were phased out. Thanks again.
Wow what a great video!! We used to manage the trees for tramlink up till early this year it’s great to see what they looked like certainly along king Henry’s drive they have barely changed!!
Always wondered which way the 130 used to go! Sort of similar, only they swapped out the Croydon bit for Norwood/Thornton Heath. If only there was still a bus that went round the estate that took you into Croydon the Shirley way rather than the Selsdon way. I wish the camera panned a bit as would've been good to see some of the stuff either side, but still interesting to watch. Did the 64 run back then from New Addington as it seems like they split some routes?
64 definitely went to New Addington then. Went via South Croydon and Selsdon rather than via Shirley. It had previously run out to Tooting, and this part was split into the 264 at some point (80s I think).

Looked bloody better in around Croydon & addiscombe back then.
Tramlink still in construction😃
Wow Croydon looks so different
Pre tramlink era😀
I bet you don’t know what fleet number this is?
Never mind nevertheless superb video footage and thank you for bringing me back memories this route
M1098!
The Cummins Metro's were wonderful sounding motors and it's nice to hear one again. Don't suppose you know which one it was?
M1098 is the answer🚍️
Is there any part of the journey that is dedicated only to Service 130?
Sorry I don't know😅
I think Gravel Hill and Upper Shirley / Shirley Hills Road was only served by the 130 (and maybe the X30).
Nice! When did the 130 change to serve Norwood Junction instead of Croydon?
Tramlink is still under construction at this time😄
I think route is changed in 2003.
@@viewfromtheupperdeck Ah okay. That does make sense tbf 😅
It was cleaner bk then lol
Bring em back
I miss the Cummins Metrobus😭
