As a guy who did this hundreds of times in real life, fly formation off the aircraft, NOT the basket. Stabilize in the pre-contact position. Fly form fly form fly form. Slowly move in, using your peripheral vision to track the position of the basket. A little rudder work is okay. Wiggle your toes (no kidding, instructors would tell us to do this to relax). Once again, your focus should be on the jet, not the basket. Fingertips on the stick. If you grip the stick while flying form, you’re wrong. If you fly form off the basket, it’ll go to hell quickly.
What's up man. Thank you for sharing your experience. This adds to both me and others who love aviation and look to DCS to have some of the experience you had flying and refueling. Appreciated! Seeya! 👏💪🍻
My pleasure! You DCS guys have the tactics and procedures nailed down pretty well, to be honest-I try to add the little details that come from time in the jet. Keep up the great videos!
For those out there struggling, I found a little cheat yesterday and was finally able to do it, engage the AP ATTH and that gives you a ton more stability. First time I ever successfully tanked and did it 3 times in a row
Well done! Wow, indeed. First, don’t get me, please! That video was well done! Great intel and exampling. My next sortie will involve AAR. But it felt like I was being instructed by my father. Succinct & direct. Well done, I look forward to future tutorials.
I watch the basket until I connect. Then I watch the pod and stay close to it. No issues tanking. Everyone is different. Chasing the basket isn’t the problem. Chasing it when your connected is.
Hi pablo, whats up. I understand you🙂 . "Don't chase the basket" is a technique used in real life. Using it in the simulator also helps (and helps most people who have difficulty... because they keep chasing the basket). But at the end of the day, what matters is finding a technique that helps us perform the REVO (for everything in life there is a technique (or more)). If chasing the basket helps perform the REVO, everything is ok. No problem 👍😉 That's what matters. What we can't think is that the "don't chase the basket" technique is weak. It's good, it works for most people and that's why it's also used in real life. Thanks for share you view point. It might help other people too.👏. Appreciated 🍻😎
Now I think I have the right information to perform a successful refueling, so the next step is to practice a lot 😅 Thank you very much for the help!! 👏👏👏
Congrats man 👏🍻 I think REVO is the hardest thing in DCS. The merit is all yours! You didn't give up! I love DCS because it gives us these feelings of achievement. Very nice. Well done 💪 👏...and...don't chase the basket 😁
Whats up man. Good question 👏. I have my own adjustments. To better answer, I will post images of the curves and my adjustments in the Community tab of my channel. Right now I am at my job, but I will post the images later 😉 Thanks for the question 🍻
I 'm back. Man, I looked here and in the FA-18 I don't use anything on the axis. In the F-16, yes, I have a curvature in the throttle, but in the FA-18, no. I use the default settings.
A good point of reference for the s3 tanker is to put the engine nacelle in vertical lineup with the "teeth" of the pitch ladder edge, drive that nacelle to that position and you will connect with the basket when the bottom of engine is just about horizontally aligned with the 5 degree line on the ladder. Because it's a hud reference point, you don't really need to worry about lateral visual checks. Also, there is a covered switch right next to the takeoff trim button, below the probe controls, the FCS gain switch. Kick that into Oride and the your inputs get dampened, feels kind of like the specialized AAR stability mode on the su-33. Just remember to punt it back to norm when you're finished
Cool man. I have never used this switch. I'll do a test here later. Also good are these reference points. Thanks for the comment! Good flights! Many thanks! 🍻😉😎
Thx for the Tutorial. One Question: How did you get the red Indicator for Throttle and Joystick in the left bottom corner in the Video? Is ist possible to see this in the Sim too?
How are you man? Oh yes. Its possible. In fact, I was using while I was flying. If I remember, its "R-alt" + "Enter". If I remember because I changed to "R-Shift" + "Enter". Search in Controls something like "Controls" or "Showing controls". 😉 Seeya man! Anytime 🍻😎
The S3 hose is so short, it makes way more difficult and unforgiving than the basket on the bigger tankers……..if you can do it on this tanker, you can do it on any………edit…..just noticed you said this at the end!
My advise don’t death grip the stick nice and smooth movements the your throttle should always moving since your gaining fuel weight. Lastly try finding the airspeed in which you don’t gain or lose the tanker, once you find that speed try hovering around that speed
Without looking into video - the biggest mistake is focusing on basket. Watching something which is such close as the basket makes the pilot very unstable. Watch the wingtip because it is in higher distance and check the basket mainly by your peripheral vision.
Its really hard. When we accelerate, it go up. When we slow down, it go down. We always have to corect with the stick. Try to find the throttle point where you are almost at the same speed of the tanker. Once you find, you will need to make very small adjustments back and forth. Find this point helps a lot to avoid making sudden movements on the accelerator and reduce the ups and down 😉. Keep pushing💪
Found a little cheat yesterday and was finally able to do it, engage the AP ATTH and that gives you a ton more stability. First time I ever successfully tanked and did it 3 times in a row
@@TheChiefrice another hack, in the f18 at least, is you can use atc (auto throttle) to match the speed of the tanker. U gotta be pretty close speed when u engage, but if ur creeping up still, just quickly turn it off for a sec an straight back on till ur going same speed, then just focus on flying

Nice! Tks for sharing 👏
It also let you use the trim hat as a mini joystick to make those fine adjustments.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for publishing. The S-3 hose fact was a new one. Although it does sound like a 1960’s NATOPS training film. 😂
kkkkkk. Tks man. Appreciated!

This is very good. I love the visuals.
Hey man! Me too. The external views are awesome. Tks for the comment! Seeya!
When the tanker gives you an airspeed… is it True AS? Groubd AS?
I realize it's approximate. So, we have to get closer to find out the true speed. 🍻😉
Great video! Out of curiosity, what are the settings on your joystick: deadzone, curvature, saturation and do you have a throttle curve?

@@Schlossgeist73 I think its called show controls indicator, very handy to have mapped to a button
Nice tutorial. I have never seen a basket sit that steady. Does DCS simulate the basket being buffeted?
DCS can keep it that way 😅 Thanks man. Appreciated 🍻😎
Thanks for the help. Very good video 👌
Hey dude. Tks for the comment. Thank you 🍻😎
Thanks for the help. I am still struggling with this. I will keep your comments in mind.
Tks man 💪
For me the best advice i was given was "Git Gud!" I took it to heart and got gud
😂
A very well-made tutorial!
Appreciated bro! Tks!
Nice tutorial ! Wake turbulence are enable ?
Tks! Appreciated man! I went to check, because you asking made me realize that I was very weak. But yes its on. Seeya!

i have more kill`s on that tanker then Richthofen had in combat..
