Amy is pretty interesting case scenario in this franchise because she evolved a lot among the years but mostly because the writing changed, and not necessarily because of major character development. But there are always core traits to her character that are still present to this day that helps smooth over these shifts in character writing. The thing about Amy is that she has a huge crush on Sonic, that she is very open about (sometimes to the extreme, which was often the case in the 2000s). She has string temper, and she is full of compassion. While she wasn't able to physically do much at first, her compassion runs so deep that she was able to touch Shadow's heart, convincing to join forces with Sonic and the others to save the Earth in Sonic Adventure 2, effectively turning the tides for the heroes. In Sonic Adventure 1, she had a conversation with one of Eggman's robot, and her words managed to it too, convincing the robot to turn against Eggman and save the animals that were trapped inside other Eggman robots. She's a character that's very full of love, not just for Sonic but for the world in general, and she wants everyone to feel loved
There is one last vocal character theme in Sonic Adventure, "Lazy Days (Livin' In Paradise)" for Big the Cat. It's literal perfection 👌 There is one other playable character besides Big: E-102 Gamma, but he doesn't have a vocal theme. You just gotta experience his deal yourself in the game XD
I love My Sweet Passion! It doesn't get a lot of attention as the others, but I love the vocals and groove of the song! Amy's role in sonic adventure is her protecting a bird that is being chased by one of eggman's robots, unknowing that the bird has a chaos emerald. She does seek out Sonic's help with the task but eventually decides to make it her own mission to protect the bird. She also protects Gamma, the robot in the video, from Sonic, showing her compassion for others. She wants Sonic to respect her and see her as an equal, which reflects in the lyrics "You probably need me just as much as I need you." Of course, Amy's character has since evolved from wanting to impress Sonic to actually becoming an equal to the gang, but Sonic Adventure was her first step to proving that she can protect others and be a hero too. This game showed that she was more than just a girl who loves Sonic, but it would take years for SEGA to come back to this concept and fully integrate it into her character now.
I'll say you'll be surprised how different she is in Frontiers ! Recently her character has grown a lot, I mean, she's been through a war, I guess that does change people.
I love this song a lot ah. lot of people don't like how it makes amy sound like a creepy pyscho gf (well she kind is, just an obsessive gf/fangirl tho), but that's the fun of it. sonic adventure was a game of its era (this game as '98), they could get away with lot of stuff back in those goofy years. I'm in absolute love with its instruments, it's so fun, it's literally one of these songs that put a grinning smile on my face blah blah, it's obvious "lazy days" is next haha pd: no, I can't seem to think how that cat verse relates to the game, atleast not that I can remember. if it somehow does, then it has to be a very, very metaphorical one... I think (?
Don’t worry, I’ve played almost every mainline Sonic game and have known about this song for over 20 years now and its lyrics still confuse me as much as they confused you xD If you’re looking for where to go next with reactions, this would be what I recommend: If you want to stick with the Adventure games, the only lyrical theme left from Adventure is Big’s theme. Adventure 2 has lyrical themes for Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge as well. If you’re wanting to pivot towards Heroes for a bit, then there’s Follow Me for team Rose (which, not to hate on My Sweet Passion, but that’s probably a better theme for Amy), and the main theme, “Sonic Heroes” by Crush 40
amy did have her own story in sonic adventure that was mostly separate from sonic aside from a few overlaps and a big overlap at the end, but for the most part. she was doing her own thing
Most theme songs in Sonic sound like (or explicitly are) songs written about the characters. But Amy's theme songs (My Sweet Passion and Follow Me) sound more like songs she has on her playlist and listens to on a regular basis.
Follow Me really sounds like a teen pop sound that could've played on the radio, MTV, or Disney Channel in the early 2000s and people wouldn't know it was made for a video game.
It should be noted that this song does not accurately represent Amy today. Her character has changed significantly since 1998. Naturally, these characters will grow and evolve over the years
One more vocal character theme in Sonic adventure called Lazy days which is Big the cats theme. You will definitely not expect the way his theme is by looking at his character and seeing his gameplay. His gameplay is basically fishing for his friend froggy and that’s it lol.
3:00 - Yeeeeah. That's about the right reaction for that line. I...... still to this day get creeped out by some of these lyrics. But it's just so catchy.
As people have said, Big's theme from Adventure 1 is a good time. For later, I'd suggest E.G.G.M.A.N from SA2. And thank you for getting stumped on the "I had to shave it" lyric. I'm pretty sure most of us were waiting for that XD We still don't understand either.
Also I'm not sure people are gonna recommend this to you before moving straight to the SA2-specific character themes, but you should listen to Big's theme as well ! It's called Lazy Days, and I personally love it, it's so unique !
Do you care for Shadow at all? There’s a new fan made film called Project Shadow about his backstory on the arc, they have a whole cast for the English dub including Mike Pollock making a cameo (he’s the voice actor for eggman in the sonic franchise). I highly recommend reacting to it it’s AMAZING. So damn good in fact I’m actually worried that my expectations for Sonic 3 are too high now 😂🔥
This song doesn’t represent who Amy is today but it sure has a lot of sexual undertones in it which aren’t so subtle and hilarious and probably embarrassing for Amy if she heard it today 🤣
i just realize you listened to team chaotix and team dark's theme, but not sonic and Amy's ( team Rose) themes! glad Team sonic is coming but i hope that Team Rose theme is also on the list. i kind of associate that one as Amy's new theme personally.
Nobody knows what the hell that sphinx line is supposed to mean. Honestly, I don't wanna find out 😂 But yeah, this theme is amazing. Love the big band style it goes for. Another theme you should check out if you like jazzy Sonic music like this, is Rouge the Bat's theme, Fly in the Freedom. It's an underrated masterpiece.
I may have expressed myself a little poorly in the last video, I'll say, I love a lot of things about this song, I love the band, the instruments, of course, it is a Sonic song so it is good, Sonic songs (almost) never fail, doesn't matter if it is a song for a character, a stage or even a menu I do love "My Sweet Passion", but when compared to the other songs it is definetly my least favorite, some parts of the lyrics are really weird, like "I would paint myself blue for him" or "The sphinx is so cute, I had to shave it", that's why I said I wasn't the biggest fan of this one, I like "Follow Me" from Sonic Heroes a lot more, it is so bubbly, cute and romantic that it sounds like a romantic movie Since next week it's going to be "We Can", Team Sonic's theme from Sonic Heroes, I guess "Follow Me" could be right after, like that you would've reacted to all the 4 Team themes in Sonic Heroes+What I'm Made of (just leaving "Sonic Heroes" to be reacted)! Then from there I think you could go into Sonic's "Second Wind", Tails' "Another Passage", Knuckles' "Blood Flow" and Amy's "Maybe If...", their themes in Sonic Frontiers, and then maybe go back to the Adventure themes with "Throw it All Away" Shadow's Theme, "Fly in the Freedom" Rouge's Theme and "E.G.G.M.A.N." obviously Eggman's Theme, all from Sonic Adventure 2, also "Lazy Days" Big's Theme and Gamma's Theme (that has no name) from Adventure 1! If you're interested, the plot for Amy in Sonic Adventure is in the reply:
She is bored while living in the town, she misses when Sonic was around and they had cool adventures, so Eggman's ship (the Egg Carrier) appears in the sky one day and from there a little bird falls, a big Eggman robot falls from the ship and goes after Amy and the bird, but Amy manages to escape, so she decides she is going to take care of the bird, and that's what she do until the end of her story During that time she finds Sonic and say if he couldn't help her to take care of the bird, the game doesn't show that but thanks to the next cutscene we can assume he accepted (and in the japanese version it is a lot more clear that he did), but then Sonic and Amy get separated and the big robot kidnap Amy, Sonic sees and goes after her, but get too late and Amy is taken as a prisioner at the Egg Carrier After a whole thing in Sonic's Story he gets into the Egg Carrier, they find out that Eggman wanted the bird because it had a Chaos Emerald and Sonic ends up "saving" Amy, after that, the Egg Carrier crashes and every character go their own way, Amy finds out the bird has a family so she helps the bird reunite with its family (turns out that the birds were being used as battery for 2 other Eggman robots, but that's a thing for Gamma's Story, a really beautiful story), and right when the bird gets reunited with its family, that same robot that was after Amy appears again and knocks the bird down, Amy gets really angry and decides that instead of running she wants to fight back, and she destroys the robot and decides to become a bit more independent. And that's the end of her story.
I don't know if anyone recommended this yet but you should really check out more of the classic era vocal songs. aside from the sonic R songs that you already reacted to.. there's also Look-a-like from the OVA, and the two sonic CD songs You can do anything. and Sonic Boom.
I've seen alot of people suggesting various themes from Adventure 2, and while those are great, and you should totally do them sometime, I think it'd be most interesting for you to listen to the first vocal theme in a Sonic game, from Sonic CD in 1993. Interestingly, there are two different songs between the Japanese/European and American versions of the game, and I'd love to know which you prefer. In an attempt to weigh your decision: I'm on team JP. I’d highly recommend “Catch Me If You Can” from sonic riders zero gravity. It’s got one of my favorite openings of the series
