    I like your method. Other youtube videos use a method where the screw turns - but that is more damaging to the threads of the rivnut.
    I have also used an old ball bearing where you have the washers to greatly reduce the effort required, which becomes more important for the larger sizes. The nut needs to bear on the inner race and the rivnut only on the outer race. To achieve this for an M6 screw I edge welded two large thick washers together, one with a 6mm hole and the other with a ~12mm hole. This sits between the bearing and the rivnut.
    Your use of a socket head screw is ideal for its high strength (like Speedboy Pyroschnüffler recommends) so the threads don't chew up. Normal high strength nuts are Class 8 but Class 10 is also available at bearing shops and industrial bolt places. Cheapo Class 5 nuts are too weak.

    I ran into a problem: When turning the nut, it turns the washer, which turns the rivet nut. Result: Screw unscrews and nothing happens to the rivet nut.
    Solution A: Replace the washer with a piece of scrap metal that you easily can prevent from turning. Then the insert won't turn and this method works great. Problem solved.
    Solution B: Use an oversized nut that slips. Check this video - clever! @ (However, note that this method puts wear on the thread of the rivet nut, so method A is better).

    I’ve tried this method, but doesn’t work as the washers rotate in turn rotating the riv nut….trying to work out a way.
    Tried with silicone grease / brass washers et still doesn’t work😡🤬

  • @duanepk1
    @duanepk1 6 лет назад +12

    Works just great!! Tried a few other methods without success - this worked three times the first three times in a row. Best to practice on scrap metal first, so you understand how tight to crank it on (basically until the rivet doesn't move, and no further).

    Thanks for the video. Really came in handy when I needed to add additional threaded inserts to my daughter's new bed frame which was square tubular metal. There weren't any adjustment options, and the mattress was way too high. I found rivnuts that would work ($5 for 100 online at Depot) even though I only wanted about 8. My only input: Your rivnut seemed to crimp down far easier than mine, so I went through three or four bolts (zinc, stainless steel) because the torque required kept messing up the nut on the threads, and eventually the bolts broke in half! I finally bought a Cat 8 bolt and nut, and it worked perfectly with no cross threading. Having a hex head bolt also avoided the need for holding an Allen wrench tight.

    • @barry-cq4xg
      @barry-cq4xg 4 года назад

      hi. good response, a high tensile bolt (cat 8) is the best option. This tool (and your comments) are a far cheaper alternative to buying a rivnut proprietary tool.

    To crush the rivnut requires a fair amount of force. It’s easier to unscrew the bolt afterwards if you put a bit of grease on it first.

    Great video! Thanks! Here are two ways to make it even faster. Use a ratcheting box wrench. Or, use a longer bolt and run it through from the other side. Then put your nut on the threads that poke out. Use a socket/ratchet on the nut while holding the bolt with your hex key.

    • @gregdetzky2238
      @gregdetzky2238 5 лет назад +2

      Other side? Forget it ... These rivets mostly just for the cases when you can not reach to the other side. Think of square tube, for example ....

  • @gregdetzky2238
    @gregdetzky2238 5 лет назад

    I have not read all the comments. May somebody suggests the same. If you would use an elongated nut (and and adequate longer bolt) then the force on the thread is distributed on a longer interval so the nut will not deformed by the wrench.

    Great video. Nice setup when you only have a few to do and don't want to invest in an expensive rivet nut tool. Made me cringe for a second though. I am one of those people who is usually doing something with a tool and I think to myself "if this screw driver slips it's going to jab a hole in my hand" and It usually does. Same with the open end or crescent wrenches. Especially cheap ones. "if this wrench slips it's going to tear my knuckles up on that sharp thing" then BAM!!! it does. I could see that the nut you were using had some rounded shoulders. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I'm glad you made it unharmed.

    • @alfredomarquez9777
      @alfredomarquez9777 4 года назад

      DO NOT.- If you spin the screw, you are rubbing the threads on the Rivnut, needlessly weakening it. The PROPER way is to HOLD the screw while turning the common nut with a wrench, I use an Allen head screw and hold it stationary with an Allen wrench, and a small socket mounted on a though-hole (holow) Ratchet wrench, to quickly turn the standard nut and form the rivet shape. The Rivnuts are made form a SOFT material, in order to easily deform the end and form the "lip" that retains it in the hole... By turning the screw with a power tool, you are rubbing too much the threads inside the Rivnut, prematurely weakening it.

    You ought to put the box end over the nut, then assemble. You'll get more power to squeeze the river and not strip the flanks of the nut. Otherwise good video to teach someone who isn't familiar with these rivnuts.
