I'm a photographer. I deleted my Facebook account years ago and finally stopped using Instagram earlier this year - it just wasn't worth it anymore, for any reason. Yet I've had my website for more than 18 years now. No social media aspect, no pressure, just pictures, all mine. And I absolutely love it.
I've been making a living as a designer since the late 90's. I can tell you, the leads I got during my time on social media (Insta was the last to go 2 years ago, FB over 10 years ago,...) were worth next to what I paid for them.. nothing but time. In either case, building leads and clients is hard work, whether on social or through old school networking (and MOST importantly, good work and behaving like a professional.). I have retained almost 90% of my "Traditional lead" clients, while my "Social clients" , it's like 5%. It's ALL about making actual human connections, which are not possible on social media. @@Teeconsultingg
It’s refreshing to hear a 21 year old talk about connecting and networking on the internet outside of social media *platforms. I’m 37 and I kinda miss the old days of Blogging websites in the 2000s because it was kinda light and less serious back then. It’s cool to hear younger people show an interest in using the internet differently - especially for artists 🎨
hell yeah. It's so crazy how billion dollar industries were built without social media and now there's this general consensus that social media vanity metrics determine business success. I'm so glad I have a marketing agency perspective on the subject. Businesses are not gonna pay you $4k a month to grow their social media accounts when it doesn't translate into well over $4k a month in profits for their business.
@@neuflaville You're choosing to manipulate the technicality of language to get your whack ass bars off and it shows you're bored asf. I'm sure you're smart enough to understand that in this context social media and a website are two vastly different things. You might think you've clever by trying to be technical but situational awareness and understanding context is also a big part of intelligence. Just do yourself a favor and log off for a couple days because social media obviously has your mind flustered to the point where you have to be weird towards people in one of the chillest comment sections. The war you're fighting is a personal war existing inside of your mind. No one here is your enemy. Get some sleep, take some magnesium. Care for yourself. Help yourself, or seek help.
I'd love to hear how ya'll are progressing. My current unmonetized personal website is 10 months old, and I've made friends with a lot of other personal website owners. It's a whole different world from social media. The metaphor I use is neighbors talking to each other over the fence rather than crowding into the town hall.
@@RealDevastatia Life has gotten pretty busy so I haven't touched my website in since April, But I have noticed that a lot of strangers are finding me more and more on LinkedIn which I have linked on my personal site. I think I'm going to implement some web analytics to see where visitor are coming from easier. wbu?
I am a writer but I HATE Instagram. I don’t like the idea of having to constantly pump out content just to reach a level of success. I feel like that kills your passion for any kind of art you create. I will be looking into creating a website and slowly distance myself from the world of social media because it doesn’t dictate my success as a literary artist. Your video opened my eyes to other possibilities.
This makes me so happy 😭 I just someone else that it takes time to make certain type of content so we can’t allow ourselves to be pressured into pushing out content. It takes me hours to finish a drawing and a lot times I don’t finish in one sitting. I’m glad you are learning about other options and opportunities and I wish you the best of luck with everything. ✨💛
This is why my book hasn’t really done well. I am NOT a social media personality even when I try so I’m sooo much happier when I’m off of it. I’m definitely trying some of her tips!
@@igrowdaily I'm in operations for marketing agencies that are always looking for talented freelancers. When we don't use upwork or fiverr, we search ig and websites for real examples of what creatives have experience doing.
I followed Leonie Dawson who does art and other things. She left social media for over a year. Her last post on everything explained how to get to her website. So maybe not deleting your social media accounts, but having a link to your website, RUclips, and Pinterest. That way people can still find you if they follow you and wondering where you are.
Deleted social sites over 30 days and I love not knowing everyone’s business and feeling like I can’t be myself or I need to be in a certain group in order to fit in and go viral (once ). I’m grateful to have any YT and my webpage. I’m sticking to word of mouth for my business as well. We got this ladies and gents ✅👏🏽👏🏽
As an artist I’m also sick of social media & just started focusing on RUclips fr. Never thought about just making a website though it makes so much sense 😭 great video 🙌🏾
Thank you so much. It’s so easy to think you have to only use social media platforms. I forget that people use websites for their portfolios all the time 😂
yeah, websites are still effective and where we can gather customer data like email list. It also allows people to focus on what you have to offer because its not mixed up with other peoples content.
So true!!! Never go with the trend. Make the trend. Don't niche down. Be the niche. The right people will find you; it's just a time game. Much love 💕Matthias 👋
I made my own website earlier this year. I also bit the apple of always posting on social media and trying to win with the algorithm. Right now I am focused on launching my product. I also plan on going back the old school way. Making flyers and business cards and mailing them out to random people. I think a lot of us forget that part of marketing.
I love this! I was an influencer, making great money off IG alone but once I started really traveling solo, I got tired of feeling pressured to post EVERYTHING! You do have to maintain consistently posting, being in stories and respond to all the comments. I walked away from it all 1 year ago and never felt more peace in my life!
YOU ARE ENOUGH! I struggle with what to prioritize all the time and I know I can’t keep giving my all to these other social media accounts. But I know what I can control which is RUclips and how often I upload and my business, and seeing where this all goes. I shouldn’t stress myself out about these things at all and neither should you because even though instagram or tiktok or whoever might not think your art is good enough I can guarantee you it is. We just have to keep trying and changing our strategies. Good luck and don’t give up!!! 🫵🫶
Your going in the right direction. The people that renovate with you will find you. Trust me. Some people don’t even care that you left. People just want to see what others are doing to compare. Your amazing and will continue to do great things. I’m cheering for you! Signed , Your new sub 😉✅
Consider not burning down thee bridge (because you just might want to cross it some day)... I would suggest automating your social media... You can feed this video link to free website like Kapwing and ask it to repurpose it and it would give you 5 TikTok video you can upload. It doesn't have to be artwork alone... But what you wish.

this is exactly how I feel. I deleted all of my social media 2 weeks ago. I got tired of comparing myself and constantly trying to catch up with trends just so people can see my art. now I can focus on my youtube channel and be as creative and original with my work without being so judgment of myself. I also noticed there are people with less the 5videos and they already have over 20k subscribers. meanwhile I have 143 videos with 200 subscribers. ❤ But I'm learning to appreciate my subscribers. at least there is someone out there who like my art and I'm ok with that 😊. At least I don't have to lose myself anymore just to get people noticed me. My community with find me and appreciate my work as I appreciate them. 🙏
thats another thing. the social media culture influences people to value quantity over quality when it comes to engagement. most of us would rather have 1,000 followers and each of them purchase something than 10,000 and only 500 purchase 😭 both are great of course, it’s just numbers dont mean much if you’re not able to get anything from it besides appearing popular
A good website is one of the best investments you can have as a business once well stablished! Once your mailing list is up, then you can communicate with your community with no filters and barriers! But I wouldn’t delete my social media as this is a way people can find your website, but definitely be less active on them and update the website more often.
I'm glad that I found this video. I have deactivated my business instagram for like the 20th time! I do not enjoy doing my business on social media, it feels contrived and unnatural.
I'm not even halfway done with this video, but I wanna say how eye-opening "no one really caters to the followers they have now already" was. Even if the point came from someone else's video, I think you worded it in a way that it's gonna click with many people. Why are strangers who have no idea you exist so much more important than the people who DO know you exist and who ALREADY like your work? A+ video so far. 💙 EDIT: "Why is the algorithm grading people?" P R E A C H
This is a subject I feel so strongly about and I’m glad my wording clicked with some people because I feel like I’m a yapper sometimes 😭 but I have always complained about social media in other videos and I’m glad everyone is slowly realizing how harmful it is especially to creative people. Thank you for your comment I’m glad you liked the video 💛🫶✨
This is actually really good and completely validates my exhaustion with social media. It is apart of the reason I am transitioning out of my career field. I’m just simply exhausted with feeling like I have to be apart of social media in order to survive. I don’t want to do it anymore.
I really hate that I have to become a whole content creator to grow my business 😭 it takes away from the art of it. But I’m at the point where I feel like it’s the only way to get myself out there :(
social media (specifically Instagram) is the main reason why i never posted on my crochet account! i thought that it was mainly due to me not wanting to capitalize on my hobbies, but this made me realize that with social media i would HAVE to be consistent with posting just to get engagement (and having to follow trends is just not for me) - despite me just wanting to show off my crochet goods 😅
I’m terrified at the engagement I’m getting but I’m also very happy that this is helping people 😭 go look at Damon’s and Irnjulie’s videos too because they are way more detailed (I just shared what I thought were key points) and so GOOD
I’m glad you realized this. Social media is indeed a game. And it’s a game where the rules aren’t even clearly explained ie. the comments being flagged for reasons. Yet, you’re expected to play and win the game without knowing the rules. Best of luck on your site. I deleted my socials last month as well and am working on my next creative avenue.
I've been doing the majority of my posting on my website and when I tell you the pressure isn't even the same in terms of mass production and engagement it's been so freeing, I've actually been noticing myself in a more creative space than years prior
💙 When I was your age (in 2008) it was close to the end of the "old internet" era, where you would have SO much joy when you found a niche website (or message board or blog) where people with your same common interests gathered. It was a sense of relief and comfort. And the process of SEARCHING was more fun, but also required more skill, patience and research. It's completely different now, when an algorithm that PRETENDS to know your interests will constantly feed you the most mediocre content. Basically, the old Internet was driven purely by HUMANS. I'm both happy for you, and inspired by you, that you're interested in having your OWN PLATFORM via building a website. You'll no longer have to "adjust to them." That's a human response to the dread of social media.
I am so happy to hear a 21 year old saying this! I'm Gen X and tried to do social media for a couple of years to help my youtube channel grow, and in the end it was exhausting and I don't really think it did anything to help my channel. The idea of just my website is music to my ears. Another thing I question is newsletters . I never read newsletters, but it seems like everyone in marketing says that the thing to do is create a newletter and do email marketing. If this works that tells me I am not a normal consumer of content. Is your only marketing youtube and a website? Great video. Great job!
girl EXACTLY! i was like imma be a content creator & then i kept second guessing myself & people were like make shorter videos like lol NO. had to leave i was suffering trying to shrink for THEM! RUclips for life.
I love this! As an “artist” you have inspired me to make a website. I’ve already deleted all my social media (except for YT) and it has done wonders for my mental health! I agree that Instagram was the worst when it came to posting my art. Felt like it was a waste of time and it only made me feel bad about my art. Thank you for making this video! ☺️🙏
I'm not even 3 minutes into the video and I already LOVE your perspective on viewing "non-artist" videos as a work of art. The appreciation of someone's craft, particularly when someone puts the time, effort, and love into caring for and developing it... that energy will come right back to you, especially when you're doing the same thing for YOUR respective craft. I've always felt in my heart that social media canNOT be the only way to grow your brand, your craft, and/or your business. It can help, sure, but the mental toll it takes on us as organic human beings is sometimes irreversible. I say all this to say, THANK YOU for making this, for posting this, and reminding myself and (at the time of me typing this) 65,000 other people to listen to our gifts. May we all nourish our nourish our crafts and thrive together~! 😘💙
Stopped going to facebook like 10 years ago, stopped actively checking instagram or posting there like 3-4 years ago. Never did tiktok (apart from few 1 month stints couple of years ago). It does feel like you are missing out in the beginning, but looking back now i feel like my mental space is much better without social media. Every time i go to insta (every other week or so) i feel so worthless “but not doing enough not being enough”, so it reminds me that i am better off without it. Another thing: i started blogging back in the day (early 2000s) and i was so happy doing it! There were almost no algorithms, nobody cared about subscribers. We did things just because we wanted to share something. I remember writing my blog about things i felt were lacking and i wanted to chip in. Or i posted about things i cared about. 20 years later everyone (me included) is more worried “what my subscriber wants to read” vs “what i want to share”. And its super toxic and draining this way. Tbh i just want to go back to the days when i post things i want to post and being satisfied with a small audience, instead of chasing a big audience and trends.
First off, I'm loving this low-key hangout recording style. Second, your video is probably the 3rd one I've seen on this topic. I'm getting back into freelance web designing and mixology, and I feel like social media is stopping me through analysis-paralysis. Or feel like I'm doing something because I'm watching someone else do it. Third, finally seeing Demon Slayer S3!
💙 girl you're so right I'm loving this movement away from hyper-active social media right now it has been so overwhelming lol and honestly I'm tired haha
I also slowed down posting my art, i enjoy sharing, but when i realized that the flow was being controlled, its like im not giving a i all my valuable ideas for nothing.. i went private.
I’m there. I’m a stylist and new photographer and felt so relieved when I abandoned Instagram to focus more on my actual portfolio and website. I’ll put SOME pictures on IG, but I’m not scrolling endlessly anymore. I’ve been very specific lately about where I spend my time as a creative person and I’ve benefitted greatly.
yep, feel you. been on youtube for yesrs, still under 4k. don't care. I got my hand full of followers and we just chill cause I have art that I actually want to make
Thank you so much for making this video lately I have been feeling so stressed and hopeless as an artist I constantly post art content to social media to have only 3 people like it and feel that my hard work goes towards nothing. I didn’t know how to change these feelings and how to share my art with the world, this video definitely changed my perspective
For years I used Instagram as my main social media. I would post my art on there, make sure I had good enough hashtags and call it a day. I'd get around 100 likes each post and a steadily growing following. With the new updates and Instagram pushing reels, it's impossible to grow by just posting your art. It's become a chore. I get only around 10 likes per post now, and my audience isn't growing. It sucks, because I really liked how easy it was to grow without spending so much time on it. I recently made a tumblr so I could host my art portfolio and my future webcomic on it. I didn't do it for likes or anything like that, I mostly use it as a website hosting platform since it's free and convenient. Some of my art blew up there for some reason without me doing anything else than posting my art and calling it a day. It feels great. I can post my art and showcase it on a portfolio, and there's no chores attached. It feels really freeing.
I think RUclips and website building are great skills to start learning as soon as possible. Because it’s one of the few “social media” where it’s easy to monetize and you don’t have to slave
having your own website definitely comes with its own set of problems - they cost a lil bit of $$ to maintain, take time, and there's a learning curve for the platform you're using but I love the full creative control. they can be whatever you want them to be - a personal journal, portfolio, tips and tricks - possibilities are endless. i really need to spend more time on mine haha. so excited to see what you create 🌱
Thank you so much and I’ve seen the prices of some of these websites, I’ve been doing a lot of comparing but I definitely want way more creative control. I’m glad you’re looking forward to what I have to offer for the future, I hope you continue to enjoy my content 💛💛💛
@@hi.imded_artI made my using Wix. I pay $50 per month. Plus if I want my own app I would pay $100 per month. So far I have one person subscribed to my mailing list. This video just motivated me to spruce it up more. I am going to make my website my own social media!! Think about it. The time we put into making a perfect reel or video for thee big social media platform we can put into our own website. We can have our own comment section going. I am all for taking things old school back to AOL days.
I am thankful this video popped up on my feed. I am currently in the process of creating a website. As a psychologist it hits heavy when I see “gurus” and other types of sages selling dreams of healing. No shade but it is invalidating. But as a professional I am going to focus on the long term and bigger picture. I will move forward with my website. Thanks again
I absolutely LOVE how you are radiating confidence! Social media can really kill all of your confidence. Your speech sounds like you woke up from a nightmare, realizing that nothing was real and being so happy about that. Im a musician and I feel exactly the same. Sorry for bad english or phrasing xD wish you the best!
A website + blog is SO FREEING! I’ve been doing social media for years, and finally last year I realized that I was a hamster on a wheel. I’ve been working on my blog/website for the last year (I’m a small business owner) and the amount of people who found me through my website is amazing. I do plan on starting an additional RUclips channel for help boost traffic to my site even more, but I think I’m done with creating content for IG/TikTok
As a fellow creative thank you for this video 💜 I’ve been on social media for 10+ years and living through all the changes Twitter, instagram and tumblr have gone through really discouraged me as an illustrator. Not saying they were perfect platforms before but it’s definitely gotten harder to keep up, engage and “stay relevant” with the weird algorithms. But like you said, we just have to keep going and understand that no matter what, we are enough.
I’m happy you liked the video!! I watched another video earlier today where she said that “artists aren’t content creators” our craft takes time so we can’t follow the same “post every day” schedule as someone who else. We just have to learn focus on us and not these platforms. Thank you for your comment ✨🫶
I totally align with everything you’ve said. I definitely see many people moving away from social media and moving back to a personal creative space which they control and not an algorithm.
I love this, and it is so true. I believe everyone should have a website that can make money for them and give them visibility. Thank you for sharing this. You just gave me the inspiration to finish these kits I’ve been working on. I am creating revenue kits for every industry. I’m sooo over instagram. I’m just doing Pinterest and RUclips because I love them. Pinterest is beautiful because as creatives we can post images and just enjoy it. Keep going🥰🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 and thank you again.
It’s so crazy I was just talking about this. I enjoy blogging RUclips and have been transforming my blog to a website. Everything is a system I agree the social media system has gotten ridiculous. I unplugged to the 9-5 system 8 years ago. This might be the turning of my next chapter. Thanks for the content.
Personally it would be hard to delete instagram because I have friends, mutuals, and other creators I enjoy keeping up with, and also having an audience of around 20 people that do keep up with the art/photos I post on Instagram. But it's really easy to fall into this addictive habit of trying to keep up with everything, trying not miss out on everyone's reposts, and being spoon-fed by an algorithm that takes up our time and from the people we already follow. You're so right when you talk about how degrading it is to be an artist/creator on social media, keep preaching.
This is refreshing. I think a lot of us viewers want to see creators show us their interests and ideas because we also want to see others that have the same interest and values that we might have. I hope more creators catch on to this as well 😊
I am screaming! ‘I need to find my fellow anime airhead crew.’ I am a nightmare for ghosting people and avoiding the internet, but I love this and I love your work. I can’t wait to see how you grow.. Fight on and keep making fantastic content! 💕
Before I even get into the video, the storage thing is so accurate i ran into that same problem when recording the other day haha. I agree, its interesting because I made a website but I want to focus on it more. My niche is so niche (Alternative/experimental hiphop) that the virality aspect is not even a aspect in my brain so I do things for my followers anyway or because I want too, its so whatever to me, but even with that mindset, you don't gain much outside of possible outreach and networking. But when it comes to platforms I do think websites are the way to go and this may be a part of the "evolution" of the internet...going back to it's roots. This made me think about some things. I may have to do a video on this topic as well. Great video, a lot of really important points that will help a LOT of people
I've regularly gone on social media breaks but this is the transition direction i definitely wanna go. Im a kusic artist but im tired of feeling like a slave to all the social sites
I love the idea. I'll make one for myself. BUT let's remember that even if building a website we'll have to follow certain rules to make sure your website will be "accepted" by Google and its bots.
Hiii Here’s my opinion on being on social media as an artist. For me it’s been nothing but highs and lows when it comes to engagement and followers on instagram to the point that I even quietly quit instagram for me promoting my art and wanting to work with galleries. But with the only problem is that I want my art to be accessible to everyone not to a certain class of people. I feel like a constant dilemma to making my art accessible to those who are not familiar with art museums overall. I still want to do the exhibitions and museums. I’m also working on my own professional portfolio website, editing videos for my RUclips channel and I use tumblr to post all of my carefree works. Sorry for the long rant🥺🥹
Our addiction to this stuff is crazy. Anytime I leave the socials, I end up coming back because people who have my number and should know better treat me like there's something wrong with me.
I’m glad it’s not just me feeling like this and thinking it’s because I’m “an Auntie”- lots of my peers are cranking out content. I’m just like sheesh! I think also maybe because the type of person one is, determines the tolerance for cranking out content for the purpose of “seeking approval” in all honesty. Good for you! I’m in the process of creating my own website.
Well said. I also believe I am putting too much time into social media. Playing the game of 'must have an active account' 'must engage' 'must post now and then'. Instagram truly is a joke now, especially after the paid checkmark. Even large accounts have seen a big tank in views. I remind myself that at the end of the day, they are a BUSINESS and they will push whatever gets them that revenue. Nothing else. Also I immediately subscribed once I saw Black Jack! He's one of my favorites and the first manga I ever read 💜
Thank you so much and the young black jacket was a school project that I hand drew from a reference of him so thank you for liking it, I always worried that it didn’t look right 😭🫶
I’m old enough to be your mama, I’m a self taught artist, I feel so connected to your opinion on this topic, your speaking so much of my brain thoughts, you feel so underrated trying to keep up.. looking into the folks you mentioned, thank you for sharing, I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.. it’s reassuring for us that stay in our heads 🙏🏼🙏🏼♥️🌼💚
Anime airhead gang! I started a website a few months ago and I'm happy to see more people doing so. Your comment about spending more time chasing potential fans instead of being grateful for existing fans is so true! Both myself and people I follow are guilty of this. Sometimes you want to say "don't I matter too? do I only matter if I'm a big name?". Like it is funny to me that if this was the physical world I'd never think "I should blow all my shots on gambling!" but with digital it's more likely to be shoo'd aside because "that's how you make it!". I took far too long to realize there are more important things than "making it", and that by grinding for the algorithm I hadn't actually made any progress on the goals I really wanted. (For example I'd still like to make merch and be an artist at an anime con artist alley some day) (Also I'm thankful RUclips is promoting more small creators lately as I've discovered new people this way than by search)
Love this comment and I have also noticed RUclips promoting a lot of small creators too which is how I assumed I blew up as well 😭 so glad you found me ✨🫶
Nothing but facts spoken here! 👏🏻 I am a fellow creative but absolutely hate using social media other than RUclips. I just started posting again in my other channel but was worried about not having a TikTok or Twitter or whatever to accompany it. But I think the website idea is brilliant!! Thanks for this vid 🥰
@@hi.imded_arti’m on my other account right now lol but just wanted to update and say that I just created my own website today to supplant my old social media. Thank you again for being a huge inspiration! 🫶🏻
I so resonated with everything you talked about here. Like that second voice in your head questioning "Will Instagram like this?" When that's not how you actually want to be thinking
Great content! I really am also planning on posting more on youtube because you're right, posting on IG or tiktok be making me feel like I have to keep up with the trend and so I tend to forget that I have to do this for myself and not really paying much attention on other's validation. I noticed that most of the posts i did there wasn't just giving "me" anymore.
Make your website SEO friendly so that way you’re discoverable. Write blogs or transcript your videos as well as add meta tags to your pictures when you upload then.
I really appreciate this, Damon stands as one of my favourite RUclipsrs and I've been watching him for years since Damon & Jo days. I totally missed this video though so I'm glad you're doing this recap! Even in my own journey of creation I've had to realise to appreciate the community I'm building and pouring into a resonant audience rather than stretch myself so that I get 'more views'. Appreciating who's supporting us already is key!
I’ve also been following him since the Damon & Jo days. I absolutely adore Damon, if you get the chance definitely check the full video out if you haven’t already. I’m glad you liked the video!! 💛
The way I gasped when you mentioned Damon!! (he's on of my favs). Your video randomly came up on my feed & I was definitely intrigued because I've been seeing so many creators (more so TikTok) talk about the need to move on to something more stable as a creator (away from the algorithms). The RUclipsr HINDZ recently made a compelling video on this topic as well entitled "TikTok is a new age casino". Anywho, loved this vid and the points you made!
I didn't realized it before, but it seems that the combination of my underlying mental disorders and social media has made me feel rotten inside.. I don't know how to explain, but it has been holding me back as an artist & a human being.. Thanks for the video, love to see more from you ❤
I’ve been thinking and doing the same exact thing with my music and videos, definitely a great way to express your art, build your website up to something amazing
Thank you!! I've been saying this for years! As an artist, I just can't get behind socials. Slow Marketing IS for the artist. You solidified so many points. Great video ❤
💙 I love this. I make and create for myself alone, and typically only post to social media because it’s an easy way to catalog art. Many years ago I kept up a website, but went through a creative recession for a few years and didn’t feel like paying for the website upkeep anymore. I typically only watch or click on videos with small amounts of views and will always comment because I miss the old internet and miss how connected and personal it felt. :) it’s so easy to fall into the internet lottery mentality-constantly checking how many views or likes something got, but I think what we’re all really craving is that sense of community, with people who care about the things we create. Good luck with your website!
Absolutely related to everything you just said. I feel like you’re my little sister I haven’t met yet 😊. You are a breathe of fresh air and I am proud of you for realizing the cons of social media and that you are building your own website. I got off IG and FB over a year ago and haven’t looked back. But when you launch your website post your link so I can check out your art. New subbie❤
I definitely agree. Nothing is new anymore. Because everyone posts their vacations and traveling it takes the wonder and novelty out of the experience when you visit a new destination.
Very well spoken. Thank you for this video. One of your points reminds me of something rick rubin said, that he creates art for himself as if it's a diary entry, and then other people like it too. And that when people create something intended for others based on what they think someone else would like, it ends up being no good
I'm not an anime person but I got really interested in your art just from hearing you talk about this subject. Love to hear other creatives have the same feelings for social media. Big hugs from sweden ✨️
i'm so proud of everyone that decides to ditch social media and start self-publishing their work on their own medium. so refreshing to see in a society addicted to social media. keep it up!!
This is something I’ve been thinking about. As someone who sits back and observes the temperature of social media (literally an 80s baby growing up with it) I realize that we are on the decline of social media as we know it. Websites will be back on a rise. I would caution to be selective on which platform you build on. However I think it’s more stable than other social platforms. More importantly, I think community and connection is going to be the way to go, and I also think more value will be placed on how connection between creator and community (hope that makes sense) anyway, great video.
I’m loving your video, it’s authentic and genuine. I felt an instant connection with your words. 💙keep it up you are connecting with people and your personality shines thru love!!!
You’re wonderfully inspiring! I stopped sharing on social media to focus on creating content that resonates with the ladies I have a message for and to create a website. I 1000% hear you ! Social media, can be so time consuming! Yes, social media hooks you in like a slave. I concur wholeheartedly! Thank you for this message! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I dont like instagram what's so ever! It feels so good to say that too! For so long I felt pressure to like the app because everybody claims you need it. But really I feel like it promotes such pressuring expectations. It promotes hustle culture, ranks you by productivity, and creates a notion that we aren't good enough. Like I just wanna post my art but it feels like my art can't stand on its own it needs to be a reel, it needs to have a trending sound and be posted at 8:00am on Wednesday with just the right amount of hashtags or a catchy hook. It's just silly and I don't think art should be in a space like that. So fast paced and structured. So I don't like it at alll.
You said this soooo well, “it promotes hustle culture, ranks you by productivity, and creates a notion that we aren’t good enough.” EXACTLY!!! Love this
I remember the old myspace days when you could customize your profile the way you wanted, blogs were popular and youtube didn't have an algoritm... internet used to be free, now everything is shallow and instant.
I love this topic. I love your age and perspective. And I love the editing of the video. One of the things that I do love about RUclips is the culture that I created around good editing of vlogs and adding extra interest to video content. And this is the great display of it.
It's like every day as time goes on, I just seem not to care anymore about it. Social media for me I don't know about others, but it causes me a lot of anxiety and stress. Having to keep up with the latest thing that is popular at the time then seeing everyone else living what seems to be good life gets old. I just don't care. I'm limiting myself now to only video games, RUclips in my free time until I get a job before college. It's pointless being on social media if you truly don't have the same passion for it like I had from 2018-2021.
I’m so excited for you! I recently had the same thoughts and deleted my instagram. It really is liberating. I’m glad I found your video, now I know other people feel the same way as I do 💕
Also I’m a creative/artist but I’ve never felt Instagram was a safe space to showcase my art. So a lot of people don’t even know my stuff cause I’ve never shared it online. It felt like selling your own babies for a cheeseburger and a coke. It’s depressing
I didn't delete my accounts, but I stopped posting on mine because my art (dance) was becoming performative for the likes and I was always comparing my content to others and I ended up taking a long break from dance, both for physical and mental health reasons. I picked up a bunch of hobbies I like and have been tempted to post about them, but I hella limited it, so that I wouldn't get myself caught up in the comparison field or get people asking me to make more or post more about them. I am planning to delete the apps off my phone this week as even though I limited my scroll time a lot I still can't help but get into a doomscroll mindset when I open the apps, and I know its easier for me to stop it on my computer and limit my time on them if I only can use them on my computer. Who knows, I might delete the accounts one day, but at the moment they are the only way a lot of people reach out to me and keep in touch with me and it is one of the main ways I find work, so I can't fully get rid of them. But hoping to reclaim my time and my mental health with all these steps
I just found this and I FULLY support this idea. It’s crazy that what you’re saying is exactly what I was saying just a few days ago to myself. So from artist to artist, KEEP GOING and leave this crap BEHIND👌🏾🖤🖤
Im a 40yr old neurodivergent multi creator and ive felt this shift a few yrs ago and was still trying. I gave up IG for all the reasons you mention. I keep my page up as a RESUME and in bio ill put a link to my website. 2024 is,all about REAL LIFE NETWORKING.. fckn tired.. im with you girl
YES!! Thank you!! =) I have been focusing on creating my Art shop / Website all this year (& just the other day decided to add an ARt blog) ! It's exciting!! =) I can post whatever & whenever i like - the freedom is inspiring! I don't use any social media to promote my art (except occasionally post on pinterest - which i enjoy). Social media is exhausting and destroys creativity. I won't do it! I've watched many RUclips videos on promoting an art website without social media- and there's some really good ideas such as blogs, podcasts, networking, email lists, website seo, internet ads etc...- so it can be done! ♡
I love your channel. I love your videos. You’re doing a GREAT job!! It’s weird that this popped up in my feed. I have been internally battling myself about the time I spend on social media doing NOTHING but wasting time and my life. I have been beating myself up mentally to the point that I feel depressed. I’m also an artist so I relate on so many levels. I depend on my art to make a living, so social media has helped me out so much, but it has also really hurt me mentally. Keep doing what you doing girl! You’re amazing
💙 Came here after watching Lauren's video and when you started tearing up I literally joined you too, I quit using my art account because I felt the same... Nobody cares about the posts anymore it is all about reels and doom scrolling and hopping onto the next viral trend :( and I have a beef with Instagram too lmao like that app literally hates my art and me (and I have been using it since like what 2015???) I think it is not even jealousy but just sadness for me when I see artists blow up randomly like a lucky draw. I really resonate with your 'making art as a game and hoping to hit the jackpot' phrase. While currently I only make art for myself and my close group of friends on a second account I made basically to relearn to create art not for this stupid app but for me... I really want to switch over to RUclips and eventually create a website to sell my art and you have really inspired me to start working on it, so BIG THANK YOU MY LOVE. I usually consider myself a silent subscriber but your video really compelled me to crack my knuckles and start typing. Sending you warm hugs and positive vibes. We will figure it out, we have time. 💙
Awww I’m so glad you resonated with the video and you liked it!! I’m still figuring out how to navigate the world as an artist and prioritizing my mental health is the most important thing to me. If I’m not happy I won’t draw and social media has made it hard for me to be happy. This channel has really changed my life a lot just from this video and I really encourage you to make a channel too. It takes time to make videos and edit but I enjoy this way more than misting on any other platform. Do what makes you happy and run with it, you’ll do great!!! 💛🫶✨
Hey- very nice to see young artists having these realizations. I’m 65 but never grew up and never stopped being a real artist and I’ve been skeptical of what social media has done to the “artist mind.” Remember: I was a full grown adult artist for decades before the internet even happened. 🤯. I have seen it all change and it’s not good. GOODBYE SOCIAL MEDIA. Long form personal content is the move. Small group of loyal followers. Boom. Wish me luck. I wish you luck! 🙌🏼
😂l😂 when you dropped the mic… matched the feelings exactly!!! Yes! We have to nurture the audience / community we currently have and grow that way. Followers doesn’t mean $$$ - you have lots of people watching you but will they support you when it comes down to that part. SN: I felt this video just off the title… took a detox. Deleted the apps. Disappeared from my personal art page and didn’t care… it will always be there.
I want a website so bad but I cant afford it :( cuz I'm only 15 but I hope to one day have the ability to. And ur right the whole trend thing is so annoying and so bad for our brains :( plus I feel pretty overwhelmed to the point where I've just stopped poseting alltogether.
I totally get what you’re saying. It’s definitely something you can work towards, just don’t feel the need to put some much pressure on yourself to keep up with the speed and wants of social media. Do your own thing and prioritize your mental health
As a tip: research how to upload your art to Pinterest first, and then use those images on your site. That way, you can redirect a lot of people from Pinterest. I hope it's useful 💕

That is great!! I can’t wait to get there too as I build my website
Period
This is so inspiring! I just deleted face book two weeks ago, it's so freeing 😊
How’s the income and getting leads ? Honest question
I was a blogger and I miss it thinking about bring it back ❤
21 here too and I agree with everything she saying here ! I really hate using social media I don't have tiktok at all :[
Quick heads up, y’all connecting online to network is literally social media. No way around it. Might as well get rid of technology all together.

I'd love to hear how ya'll are progressing. My current unmonetized personal website is 10 months old, and I've made friends with a lot of other personal website owners. It's a whole different world from social media. The metaphor I use is neighbors talking to each other over the fence rather than crowding into the town hall.

This makes me so happy 😭 I just someone else that it takes time to make certain type of content so we can’t allow ourselves to be pressured into pushing out content. where can we read your art?
Yall better get these sites up. Im literally portfolio surfing for agencies right now. It definitely is where I start first.
Are any of your agencies looking for a photographer? 👀
I started my channel and business for this reason !!!! To help people like you make it a reality!

Great idea, thank you for sharing it 💛
Deleted social sites over 30 days and I love not knowing everyone’s business and feeling like I can’t be myself or I need to be in a certain group in order to fit in and go viral (once ). I’m grateful to have any YT and my webpage. I’m sticking to word of mouth for my business as well.

A jolt IS the timespace a picture has to Switch in Order to make interest for watching
If you watch a movie and IT Doesnt has jolts per Minute that IS related to Standard movies ITS possible you loose Attention

What happend was that Theres a Standard for This in movies

this is exactly how I feel.

But I’m at the point where I feel like it’s the only way to get myself out there :(
Exactly this
💯
social media (specifically Instagram) is the main reason why i never posted on my crochet account! i thought that it was mainly due to me not wanting to capitalize on my hobbies, but this made me realize that with social media i would HAVE to be consistent with posting just to get engagement (and having to follow trends is just not for me) - despite me just wanting to show off my crochet goods 😅
Exactly, and you can’t rush something like that it takes time.
Thank you so much for your comment. I’m happy you’re also working on your next creative project and I hope everything goes well!!
Absolutely.No shrinking back for anyone🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

I love this! As an “artist” you have inspired me to make a website. I’ve already deleted all my social media (except for YT) and it has done wonders for my mental health! I agree that Instagram was the worst when it came to posting my art. Felt like it was a waste of time and it only made me feel bad about my art. Thank you for making this video! ☺️🙏
I’m so glad it helped!!! Prioritizing your mental health should alway be your number 1 goal and I hope everything with your channel goes well!!!

I’m so happy for you!!! I hope you reach all your goals and stay happy while doing it 💛💛💛
yep, feel you. been on youtube for yesrs, still under 4k. don't care. I got my hand full of followers and we just chill cause I have art that I actually want to make
Having a few loyal followers is always wayyy better, that sounds so nice just chilling with your small community and doing what you love
Thank you too, I’m glad there are many people like me who value Pinterest and RUclips more than anything 💛💛
Or focus on word of mouth to generate traffic.
Wish I could like this a million times. I'm not an artist but I can relate to everything you said. Good luck! 💙
Thank you so much!! 💛
Hiii
Here’s my opinion on being on social media as an artist.
You do not have to apologize I love hearing other’s opinions. Good luck on your art journey, you’ll do great!!!! 💛💛💛
Our addiction to this stuff is crazy. Anytime I leave the socials, I end up coming back because people who have my number and should know better treat me like there's something wrong with me.
Also, I love your and Lauren's videos. Both of you come off as actual people and not brands.
(For example I'd still like to make merch and be an artist at an anime con artist alley some day)
(Also I'm thankful RUclips is promoting more small creators lately as I've discovered new people this way than by search)
Love this comment and I have also noticed RUclips promoting a lot of small creators too which is how I assumed I blew up as well 😭 so glad you found me ✨🫶
saw the title and almost cried. Same type of time
Nothing but facts spoken here! 👏🏻 I am a fellow creative but absolutely hate using social media other than RUclips. I just started posting again in my other channel but was worried about not having a TikTok or Twitter or whatever to accompany it. But I think the website idea is brilliant!! Thanks for this vid 🥰
Thank you so much!!! So glad you liked the video and good luck with your creative work 💛🫶💀
@@hi.imded_arti’m on my other account right now lol but just wanted to update and say that I just created my own website today to supplant my old social media.
Thanks for the tip I really appreciate it 🫶
I really appreciate this, Damon stands as one of my favourite RUclipsrs and I've been watching him for years since Damon & Jo days.
Thanks for the video, love to see more from you ❤
I’ve been thinking and doing the same exact thing with my music and videos, definitely a great way to express your art, build your website up to something amazing
hello fellow artist! deleted all my socials 2 days ago and i feel AMAZING
That’s so exciting!!! I’m glad you’re already feeling great about it, I’m so happy for you 👏🎉💛
lol it's an epidermic kk
Thank you!! I've been saying this for years! As an artist, I just can't get behind socials. Slow Marketing IS for the artist. You solidified so many points. Great video ❤
The quality is good enough, always remember personality is everything Keep pushing 😎😎
New subbie❤
Welcome and thank you for your support I really appreciate it 😭🫶✨
I definitely agree.
Love this
You have a big platform here on RUclips. Remember, you are someone else’s goal. 🥰
I love this, I will definitely remind myself thank you 💛
I’m so glad you posted this, I think about doing this all the time 😂 glad I’m not alone
🥺😢
Hoping you meet your goal of reclaiming time and better mental health, I’m shooting for that too ✨
I just found this and I FULLY support this idea.
I feel you 💯 I deleted my Facebook a couple of days ago. And a weight lifted from my aura 😊
I’m so glad everyone who is deleting their apps are feeling so much better and I hope you continue to do so 💛
I love your channel.
Nobody cares about the posts anymore it is all about reels and doom scrolling and hopping onto the next viral trend :( and I have a beef with Instagram too lmao like that app literally hates my art and me (and I have been using it since like what 2015???)
I think it is not even jealousy but just sadness for me when I see artists blow up randomly like a lucky draw.
Love this, taking a detox is always so refreshing especially for my creative mind
Send me a email I can help you get started love. Seriously!
Look into a free wix site?
I wrote about this on my blog the other day! Keep doing your thing!
As a tip: research how to upload your art to Pinterest first, and then use those images on your site. That way, you can redirect a lot of people from Pinterest.
I hope it's useful 💕
It is, I have a Pinterest account that I don’t use to post I just save hella pins lol. But I need to look into it, thank you for the tip 💛✨
