Yes, we get a kick out of an oblique hint or two, but ultimately, the vicarious first time is what we come for. To see the wheels turning as people try to figure out mysteries or freak out over the major hype moments, and that can't happen if we spell everything out.
It's a pity that anime communities don't do that especially MHA and AOT fans. Particularly when reactors ask certain questions that are answered or clarified later.
She's also a strong independent female with a disability. She's 20 years ahead of the times and still dominates any modern female character in terms of writing and characterization.
The reason they thought Toph took a dive is because Airbending is invisible. Air cannot be seen which makes it VERY difficult to defend against. In the show you can only see it because the animators had to make it that way. That’s why they thought Toph took a dive, because Aang’s air attack couldn’t be seen
Fun fact: Instead of being based off of Hung Gar (I believe its also called Tiger Style), Tophs earthbending is based off of Southern Praying Mantis style. A martial art that specializes in close range combat and is focused on arm strength.

Yeah, because, as I understand it, Dwayne has a clause in his contract saying any character he voices isn’t allowed to lose a fight or something like that. Kinda egotistical if you ask me.
if you remember the little girl from the fortune teller episode who had a crush on aang, the creators of the show liked her voice actress so much they invited her back for the role of toph here

Toph has the best and worst "vision" in the series. She can basically see 360 degrees around her in with about as much range as you can see. It's also said that she can sense earth in the air, so like when an earth bender sends a rock at her, she can sense that. The biggest limitation with that is metal as you can't bend metal. However, she can't see anything not connected to the earth. So birds in the air, are invisible to her. This is also why she had trouble detecting Aang. His air bending allowed him to extend his time in the air when he was off the ground. While Toph can probably estimate where someone jumping would land, with Aang it's pointless. Hence, the "light on his feet" and "twinkletoes" comments.
if I'm not mistaken toph can bend metal later on (despite the show telling us otherwise), I'm pretty sure that happened at one point in the series..? it's been a long time since i watched this show, but i feel i remember that happening. I remembered this actually being my first ever episode of avatar when I was about 6 years old. I was at my auntie's and my cousins were playing this episode on the TV and I was so in love with toph's character and her fight. It still remains uncontested as one of the best episodes of the show in my eyes! I'M GLAD YOU'VE FINALLY MET TOPH. Her and Iroh are my favourite characters in the entire series.
The Blind Bandit is literally one of my favorite episodes in all Avatr, due to the introduction to Toph, my favourite character. I just love how the series managed to introduce a new member to the Gaang in such a natural way... And a character with a disability at that, who stands on it's own at the same time and isn't used as a joke! So excited to see the new group dynamics!
Fun Fact: The Earth Bender in the intro was originally supposed to be Aang’s earth bending master but the writers decided to have a character that is the same “age” as Aang and created Toph and to be his teacher instead. Also the fire bender in the intro is actually Azula
Aren’t all the benders in the intro actual characters in the show? The water bender is Paku, the Earth bender is the Boulder, the fire bender is Azula, and the air bender is Aang
@ravenblood1954 funnily enough, the earth bender is not the Boulder. The earth benders used in the intro got reused to be Avatar Roku's earthbending teacher instead.
I think I’ve heard that the intro characters were originally intended to be Aang’s bending teachers. The earthbending teacher was changed to Toph and the firebending teacher’s design was repurposed for Azula. And Pakku is still Pakku.
Toph’s feet, I would suppose, can only passively “hear” around herself and focuses when she “listens” intently. That’s why it was only when the ambushers were close that she felt them. She was also talking to Aang, that could’ve distracted her.
Best Girl has Arrived! For me Toph is one of the most important characters in children's media. As a disabled child I connect to Toph deeply growing up, as so many people treat us like we are "made of glass, noting more than a a helpless animal to be protected" and a lot of media treats us the same. Not only dose Avatar show Toph going through this exact thing many of us experience that many of us experience in real life it's also not how we are introduced to her; when we first meet her it's as the confident fighter rather than the "helpless child." When so many disabled characters are written as nothing more than their disability, Toph stands apart as a character in her own right, being blind is "what" she is not "who" she is. Avatar's portrays us as we are, just different not broken, and for that I am forever grateful.
Fun fact Toph’s bending is unique to her. And when I say unique I really mean unique. While the animators drew the earthbenders in Hung Gar style of Kung fu. The animators gave Toph a completely different style which is called Chu-Ka which is actually rumored to be invented by actual blind martial artist.
Fact check: Toph uses the praying mantis style for earth bending. That is more defensive fighting techniques then offensive. Most earthbenders use various forms of hun ga style of southern kung fu
Earth Bending is based on the Chinese kung fu Hung Gar. Toph's Earth Bending is based on Praying Mantis style which legend says was created by a blind nun.
I’m really feeling like I’m reliving these episodes vicariously thanks to you, like I knew everything was gonna happen and even then I still had chills when she clouded the arena and knocked the ring master, absolutely amazing!
"Aang doesn't treat anybody differently" which is exactly why her parents got caught in the food crossfire there haha I never considered how tragic it could've been if Toph hadn't run away. What a genuinely sad way to and an episode if they did that.
I thinks it’s probably a safe bet to say that Toph is the second favorite character in the entire Avatar franchise (including Legend of Korra). Obviously, Iroh takes the top spot but Toph is a VERY close runner up
Fun fact from a visually impaired person: Blind people actually use techniques similar to Toph's, but rather with echolocation through snapping and tounge-clicking instead. I met such a person myself. It was amazing. She Snapped her fingers once or twice and could tell me "over there is a table, there a bed, there a door, ..." And I couldn't ask or wish for a better representation for blind people and (as you saw by now) inclusion done right! Compared to other characters, Toph has the most moments that I get hype for when watching reactions. Some are cool, some are funny, and some are ''YOU CAN DO THAT!?!?!"
Toph's earth bending style is based on Southern Praying Mantis instead of the Hung Gar based style by most earth benders. This is because her style favors more foot movement, which is crucial for her to be able to "see". There is also an implication that this is a more pure form of earth bending as she is leagues above far more experienced earth benders.
really just smack talked them two bendy bois as third rate villains instantly, ouch. 😂😂😂 love how invested you are in the show tbh, and that you seem to be watching it frequently enough to not forget details from previous episodes and dont need the spoilery recaps, which really adds to this tbh. cuz (100% no spoilers) especially as we get later on in the show and connections continue to be made to earlier stuff, ive seen quite a few reactors just get really confused about or straight up miss stuff cuz itd been too long since they watched the earlier episodes to remember what happened. I feel like the speed with which you're going through the show is really gonna enhance your experience because you'll be able to keep stuff in mind and make connections yourself, like youve already done a couple times with season 1 stuff and to a smaller degree recognizing Toph as the girl from the swamp before it's shown. looking forward to the next episode as per usual :)
Toph is the only one in the entire show who uses Southern Praying Mantis style to earthbend Hung Gar Kuen is the default earthbending style (And yes I had to google it)
I absolutely love Toph so much, she’s honestly one of the best characters lol 😂, and not only that but I remember seeing that they specifically have her style of earth bending look different, it’s molded after a specific martial arts, I don’t remember what it was called but I think it was for her blindness, having it styled more to fit the needs of having to wait for opportunities.
for netflix where you can binge the whole show in a couple days, the recaps dont make sense. but for a show that does limited runs of episodes that are released in batches weeks or months apart on cable, the recaps were quite helpful
17:24 What a surprise hearing you talk about one of my favorite smash commentators! tophs tag is actually derived from his real name Kristopher. Its also pronounced toe-f, so, different from how they pronounce it in avatar. Anyways, love your reactions, cant wait to see more!
Paused at 29:22. This is why I feel that people need to realize how harmful over protection is. It can perfectly defend the physical nature of a lives situation; but it can never equally uphold the mental emotional spiritual side; it can only harm it worse than a normal life. Its to much good intent... and as they say that paves the road to Hel.
Yep, The Boulder is completely inspired by The Rock, and they even tried to get him to voice the character but it didn't work out, so they got another wrestler and friend of Dwayne, Mick Foley.
Toph is fantastic. Her earthbending is different from all the other earth benders we’ve seen. The animators of this show really went DEEP into studying the movements of martial arts. Most earthbending is based on Huan-Gar kung fu (I may have spelled that wrong). Toph is based on Mantis style kung fu. Her stances and movements are completely different from all other earthbending we’ve seen, or will see.

Now that we've got Toph's introduction out of the way... All aboard the pain train express! Destination, your feels!
One thing you will learn as time goes on, if toph was born the avatar we would have gotten about one season before she sunk the fire nation into the ocean. She it a god in little girls clothing
23:15
Toph: YOU THINK YOU'RE SO TOUGH?!
WHY DONT YOU COME UP HERE SO I CAN WIPE THAT GRIN OFF YOUR FACE? >:[
Xin "Fool":..........am not smiling.... -_-
This episode's where this show starts going hard and doesn't stop. Ever.
FOR REAL! Book 2 elevates the show as a whole, but after The Blind Bandit its just banger after banger after banger.
That's what she said
9:42
The moment we've all been waiting for
As a very recent watcher of this channel seeing the older models is WILD!
17:22 I'm sure the player took it in stride seeing how they're a fan of the show and know it pretty well.
5:00 Oh it wasn't for no reason. She don't tolerate people talking to HER avatar like that lmao xD
HERE SHE IS!
I love waking up to these. It's become part of my morning routine.
Yesssssssssssss its finally here!!!!!!!!!! 😁 still loving all your reactions and i hope you're feeling better 😄
LOVE this!!
I found you a little while ago. And once I saw that you were already on this episode. I just *had* to binge all the reactions to get to this point
Toph for life!
ps: fun fact. The Beifong family is the first instance of any character having a last name in this show
Been waiting SO HARD for this episode! And if the next one is already in the can, then, you know, that one, too. :) Absolutely LOVE your reactions! I'm SO glad I discovered your channel near the beginning of your ATLA journey. ❣
I love your reactions it’s very genuine and fun and hilarious. Keep up the vids and I’ll keep up the likes!
The ground pound level you're talking about is Gelato Beach btw. And those duck things I believe are called.. PLungellos?
The Boulder was voiced by Mick Foley, AKA Dude Love AKA Cactus Jack AKA Mankind
Randomly stumbled upon this video and now I'm completely hooked. I gotta start from episode 1
Compared to other characters, Toph has the most moments that I get hype for when watching reactions. Some are cool, some are funny, and some are ''YOU CAN DO THAT!?!?!"
necroing, but i love this show and this character. the fact she's so competent that the gaang constantly FORGET that she's blind
4:30 More like Ice Beam haha and it's super effective.
Toph's earth bending style is based on Southern Praying Mantis instead of the Hung Gar based style by most earth benders. This is because her style favors more foot movement, which is crucial for her to be able to "see". There is also an implication that this is a more pure form of earth bending as she is leagues above far more experienced earth benders.
avatar the last airbender is one of the few master pieces that is the best going in blind
Also, the creatures from Super Mario Sunshine you were referring to are the Cataquacks.
LETS GO! THE GREATEST EARTH BENDER HAS ARRIVED!
She is here. Bumi: I am the most powerful earthbender you will ever see. Ummm...Toph.
I love how Fire Nation Man has a big fake Russian accent. I'm getting so much nostalgia for the old WWF.
really just smack talked them two bendy bois as third rate villains instantly, ouch. 😂😂😂
love how invested you are in the show tbh, and that you seem to be watching it frequently enough to not forget details from previous episodes and dont need the spoilery recaps, which really adds to this tbh.
cuz (100% no spoilers) especially as we get later on in the show and connections continue to be made to earlier stuff, ive seen quite a few reactors just get really confused about or straight up miss stuff cuz itd been too long since they watched the earlier episodes to remember what happened.
I like how you notice the consistency with Toph's blindness and psudosight.
Toph is the only one in the entire show who uses Southern Praying Mantis style to earthbend
Hung Gar Kuen is the default earthbending style
(And yes I had to google it)
Best girl is finally here. My fav character of the show.
Aang's original earthbending-teacher was gonna be similar to the Boulder, but they changed their minds.
I just love how aang comes out of the box like he's ready to fight but sokka stop he likes she got this
for netflix where you can binge the whole show in a couple days, the recaps dont make sense. but for a show that does limited runs of episodes that are released in batches weeks or months apart on cable, the recaps were quite helpful
6:00 "He kinda chunky. Love that for him, you stay thicc King."
I feel...very noticed now.
Remember the gusts of air we see are specifically for our benefit, to them it’s just as invisible as regular wind is.
12:00 OOOOOOOHHHH!!! WHY DID I FELT THAT!?
17:24 What a surprise hearing you talk about one of my favorite smash commentators! tophs tag is actually derived from his real name Kristopher. Its also pronounced toe-f, so, different from how they pronounce it in avatar. Anyways, love your reactions, cant wait to see more!
12:02 Feels like that's more a case of: if you do the Splits without being careful or without proper training, it's reeeally going to hurt.
Comments for the algorithm god! Clicks for the engagement throne! Thanks for the video.
Earthbending is the coolest bend for me, this is awesome!
Yay!! It’s Best Girl🎉🎉
YES YES YES YES YES YES FINALLY THE GOAT, THE GOATTTTT
The episode we have all been waiting for. Toph Goes Off!!!
Avatar has no shortage of badasses but Toph and Azula are my favorites
Paused at 29:22.
This is why I feel that people need to realize how harmful over protection is.
It can perfectly defend the physical nature of a lives situation; but it can never equally uphold the mental emotional spiritual side; it can only harm it worse than a normal life.
Its to much good intent... and as they say that paves the road to Hel.
Yep, The Boulder is completely inspired by The Rock, and they even tried to get him to voice the character but it didn't work out, so they got another wrestler and friend of Dwayne, Mick Foley.
OMG, I thought this was AliciaXDeath. Seeing AliciaXLife for the first time, and she looks uncanny!!! So different in art style!!!
Every "Favorite Avatar Character" Poll comes down to Toph and Iroh. Every Single Time!
