I was shown how to do it but was never able to get it to roll. Sounds great the way you do it!
Cool lesson! First saw this technique watching Billy Martin a few years ago!
I was also taught an alternative way to play these without needing to lick your finger/thumb is to use a thin rubber thimble. They both work, but I found it easier to just lick my finger. 🙂 Thanks Kalani!

I am currently trying to improve my finger rolls. I find it difficult to get started.
This does not seem to work on parchment and plastic heads. Do you need a skin head to use this technique?
Very helpful video to practice thank you I find them hard too. Also using saliva isn't hygienic in these times! Use wax instead :)

The quality of the tambourine makes a big difference. I could play neither the finger roll nor the thumb roll on my cheap $15 double row wooden tambourine that I purchased on Amazon. 😒

Mine is made of cow skin. It seems I cannot do thumb roll with this material.
Rub on it bees wax it will roll really easy cheat code 🐝
