Some may find this hard to believe, but I actually think old man Backhaus's stereo recording of this sonata 12 years later is even more sublime and delightful! The heavenly Andante is taken at a slightly quicker tempo, yet the entire movement is lifted thereby to the greatest emotional resonance. The Vivace, too, is taken slightly faster than the mono recording, but this also is ideally suited to communicating the joyful and light-hearted qualities Beethoven sought to convey.
