    I spent a week with the new Insta360 GO 3S camera, Insta360's newest action camera and successor to the very popular Insta360 GO 3. The Insta360 GO 3s has an upgraded 4k sensor and is one of the most versatile action cameras available today.

    nice review but I have to put it out there... do NOT, do NOT, do NOT trust the sticky mount alone to attach this camera to a moving vehicle. it is NOT meant for that and you do risk the camera. get a proper car suction mount, they are inexpensive and available everywhere including from insta360.

      lol I look back at the footage and cringe cuz your absolutely right, I could have destroyed the hell out of this thing trusting just the sticky mount. I even put it right in the direction of the front tire🤦‍♂️

      I agree with this I tried to use it and it would fall down, I used it on a window and it’s better to get a suction cup

    I bought mine last week to use for more candid videos of my kids. I also do e-mountain biking. This is my first action cam. It's fantastic! Only complaint is the beeping when turning on, I wish it had haptic feedback instead.

      Yeah it’s a really unobtrusive camera that’s easy to set up so it makes shooting candid videos a lot easier. Plus it allows you to be in the moment and not behind a viewfinder or screen haha.

    You were being too nice. Tell us: max bits/second, maximum one-take recording time (ie 30 min? 60v), shoot indoors in studio, does it overheat? If long one take, does it save into multiple files or one big file (like iPhone)? Give us the negative info too! 😊

    @ 4:55 i wish i *could* fumble around in the settings and turn that off/ disable it. Most of all, i wish Inst360 had designed this camera more like the Go3 and i could record with the camera in any position and have horizon lock with level 16:9 horizontal footage. With the Go3s, if i start the record having the standalone camera in a vertical position i am unable to later edit the Freeframe video in their app within the 16:9 ratio. That kills all my content recording. i don't wear hats for the clip and the pendant is janky when i attach through a thin t-shirt. Previously i placed the hat clip to my jacket lapel or bag strap in a vertical (most stable) position and record 16:9 footage horizon locked. Go3s: i am stuck with a 9:16 and i don't ever edit vertical videos so it super inconvenient and inconsistent.

      the GO 3 lens projected a round image on the center of a rectangular sensor. The edges of the sensor outside the circle went unused. Because the image was projected as a circle the GO 3 could cut a 16:9 or 9:16 rectangle out of the circle in post processing and maintain the wide field of view and of course the orientation of the GO 3 didn't matter like you said. The GO 3S achieves 4K resolution with a new redesigned lens that projects a rectangular image that covers the entire rectangular sensor now. The problem is that is how 99% of cameras work and as you know from using a regular camera, when you rotate the camera, you are rotating that sensor and the orientation of your image will change. That's why physically you can't ever get a normal wide 16:9 image out of the new GO 3S when it's in a vertical orientation. It's the tradeoff to get 4K and because it has to do with how the lens projects the image on the sensor, selecting a lower resolution won't fix the problem. NOW, GO 3S *does* offer a free frame mode that allows you to reframe the image in post, so you could mount your camera vertically yet get a horizontal image, but it does this by cropping into the center of the projected rectangle... that means you will be cropping way in and results in a much narrower field of view. you can try it, perhaps the FOV will still be acceptable for you, but its no longer wide like GO 3 was. for me the 4K was a big improvement over the image quality of the GO 3 and I don't mind changing the orientation of the device, but it is more limited in how you use it than before now I agree... I just think the trade off was worth it for most users.

    So is normal mode best for “depth perception” looking real? So many action cams something 10’ away looks 20’+. Looking for something with a real look and feel as to distance.

      @@JSLReview freeframe on the GO 3S behaves very, very differently from the GO 3... read my other reply in the comments to see an explanation but its a physical design change in the GO 3S that allows for 4K that now makes freeform crop dramatically into the image when before in the older camera it maintained the normal wide field of view. this narrow field of view now makes freeform much, much more limited in use for most I suspect, but I also wonder how many users were really choosing to use freeform and the requirement to select the orientation and apply stabilization in post anyway...

      I completely agree with what you said about the difference between Go3 and Go3S when it comes to reframing in post-production. That's what I really like about my Go2. Upgrading to the Go3S is tempting, but this issue is holding me back. Having to think about which orientation to use before each video recording is overwhelming, especially at that price point. I think the DJI Action 4 with 4K60fps and good low-light quality might be the better alternative. So, I'm sticking with my Go2 for casual use, and maybe the Action 4 could be my next action camera.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 7 дней назад +1

      @@mombre66 you have to pick orientation with the Action 4, to be honest other than the 360 style cameras like the X4 and the old GO 2/3 ... modern cameras shoot onto a rectangular sensor so you have to rotate the camera to shoot in an Instagram / TikTok vertical orientation for social media... at least without having to crop badly in post. The GoPro Hero 12 is the ONLY "conventional" action cam left that has a squarish sensor (but not true square) that allows for vertical cropping in post with minimal (but not zero) loss of FOV.
