It is located in Trichy, officially Tiruchirappalli, or also called Tiruchi (Tamil: தி ௫ ச்சி). Tamil Nadu state in South India.
🔝 The Sri Ranganathaswamy or Thiruvarangam Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a form of the Hindu deity Maha Vishnu, located in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, it is not only the main temple among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, but it is also the largest in the world still in operation.
Its location, on an island between the Kollidam and Kaveri rivers, has made it vulnerable to floods, as well as attacks by invading armies that repeatedly seized the place to turn it into a military camp. The temple was looted and destroyed by the armies of the Delhi Sultanate after battles in various cities in the kingdom of Pandy in the early 14th century. It was rebuilt in the late fourteenth century, and was fortified and expanded with various gopurams in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The temple has 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions, and many water tanks built into the complex, making it the largest operating Hindu temple in the world. Numerous inscriptions suggest that this Hindu temple served not only as a spiritual center, but also as a major economic and charitable institution that operated educational and hospital facilities, managed a free kitchen, and financed regional infrastructure projects from the gifts and donations it received.
