I was on this flight! - A couple hours in, the captain (or maybe a FA, not sure) came on the speaker and called for a doctor, a lady a few rows up from us got up and presumably went to the 2nd floor. We didn’t see her again after that, and we didn’t hear anything until what would have been 3am back in Sydney, the cabin lights came back on and the captain announced we would be landing at HNL in ~20 minutes due to the passenger’s condition. It didn’t take long for them to deplane him and his companion, and we sat on the tarmac for around 2hrs (refueling and paperwork, as they said). We landed at LAX around 3hrs later than scheduled, and they actually went through the trouble to rebook our connecting flight for us. Overall, great work on the crew’s part, and I hope the passenger was ok.
Passenger was my son. He was whisked to emergency department in hospital in Honolulu - he's all ok now and is enjoying his US holiday. looks like it might have been food poisoning from something eaten prior to boarding the plane. Big thanks to Qantas staff and the doctor who kept an eye on him in flight and put him on an IV.
I was on this flight! I literally searched to see if anyone filmed it and here we are! So cool to see your plane land and take off! Thank you for this amazing footage. I was sad about the passenger who was throwing up the entire flight but also happy I got to land and take off again. This was my second flight on an A380 and I planned my entire trip around flying on it from LA to Sydney and back
@@carlramirez6339 sadly the demand and distance makes it unprofitable to run 380s on those routes so mostly it's A330s (200 and 300 variants) from Qantas, and 787s from ANA for the two routes they service (SYD and PER).
To my knowledge it is only the second time there have been three. All three ANA A380s were here because of a typhoon near Japan earlier this year. Unfortunately it was the middle of the night.
@ReverseOps actually the only physical part of the job is hooking up both hoses on to the fueling cams, the fun part is watching your meter go apeshit spinning like it's on crack 🤣
I remember when something like this happened at ATL when we had a British Airways A380 do a scheduled flight and they usually only use the 777 and 787 and Airfrance operated their A330-200 (used for Caribbean and African Routes) to ATL too

@@Plen3716 QANTAS A380 pilots tend to be very experienced and senior. That landing should be normal. The title of this video is misleading. QANTAS A380 is not a rare aircraft, just rare in Hawaii. They use either A330 or B787 for there.
@@basilpunton5702 I think the Qantas a380 being rare in Hawaii is just what they meant. Also just appreciate the butter landing it’s an a380 so not easy even for those senior and well trained Qantas pilots.

Nothing like flying in a big airplane, but it comes as a big price when you need to divert. Not many airports can support the A380, for runway size and weight capacity, along with the taxiways. Having a medical emergency in flight leaves very few options. You better not have an emergency because you are forced to continue to the destination, and that might take many hours to get there. I would take a Boeing 787 over a A380 for a diversion because there are more options for diversion airports.
From Sydney to Los Angeles where might a Dreamliner divert to? I suppose just Fiji, Samoa and Hawaii? I was thinking of the Marshall Islands as well but Majuro's runway is too short.
There is one gate at HNL that was built with upper and lower loading ramps for ANA 380s , I wonder if Qantas used that, and if they had load on more food, and were passengers able to deplane for a while>
There are two gates here for the A380. C4 and C9 The Qantas was at C9 so the second ANA A380 had to wait for it to depart. Only the passengers involved with the emergency deplaned.
It was a medical emergency (heart attack). Happened a few hours into the flight there was a call for any doctor on board. Overnight passenger got worse, call was made to divert.
