How was it made? Making and enamelling an earring | V&A

In the late 16th century, Mughal court goldsmiths created a new style of jewellery, combining two techniques - kundan setting (gem-setting using pure gold) and enamelling. We travelled to workshops in Mumbai and Jaipur to see how these crafts are still used in the production of a traditional pair of earrings. Each stage is done by a specialist craftsman. This film shows the creation of the gold and enamel earring, in preparation for kundan setting.

Enamel is Glass fused to Metal, Ceramic, etc.
The reason why they add and cover it in water while grinding it is to ensure that the finely ground glass doesn't fly away and cause injuries.
The reason why they put it in a kiln is to melt the glass which causes it to 'fuse' with the metal.
The process is also called as Painted Enamel or Vitreous Enamel.
(There is something also known as Enamel Paint but it is different than Enamel, it a oil based paint that looks like enamel. Mostly used on furniture and walls)

It’s called “lump enamel” which is just lumps/chunks of enamel (glass). You can buy it online.
