Whenever the military says "It can do 80 mph" what they really mean is "If you really push it, it'll do over 100."

    • @ConReese
      @ConReese Год назад +4

There's usually a 30% margin from posted maximums from classified maximums so if they say itl do 80 then it probably actually does 105 for short periods

      ''If you really push it''
Also known as: WHY TF DID YOU PUSH MY VEHICLE SO HARD SOLDIER?!
And also known as: THIS AIN'T YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S CART, HIT THE GAS SOLDIER. (Usually followed by first example if something goes wrong)

Then theres the russian military, if they say "We have 10k tanks" they really mean they have 2.5k tanks as all the other tanks were lost to corruption, scavenged for parts, a rust bucket or something that has been sitting in the rain for the past two decades.

I commanded a MEU at one time. These amphibious ships, at over 800 ft are the size of a WW2 carrier. With helicopters, V/STOL aircraft like Harriers or F-35's, she is a all in one package. With 2k Marines, light armor, light artillery, air support both rotary and fixed wing, can provide Direct Action at a moments notice. Besides being an Escort carrier, they are backed up with at least 2-3 destroyers and frigates. Plus you never know where that sub is.

Americans did amphibious landings on the shores of Lingayen Gulf, Pangasinan Province, Philippines. From there they headed south to Manila as part of MacArthur's push to liberate the country from Japanese forces. I can imagine that the landings would seem like aliens arriving since the technology used at the time was so advanced in comparison to anything seen by the locals in the area of the beach landings.

MARG 1-86 Med deployment. November ‘85 - June ‘86. My company was aboard the LST USS Manitowoc (LST-1180). Other ships within the group was the USS Guadal Canal (LPH-7), the USS Ponce (LPD-13), the USS El Paso (LKA-117), and the USS Hermitage (LSD-34). I believe the Manitowoc was decommissioned in ‘89 and would later be sold to the Chinese Navy and became the Chung Ho. No idea where she is today. A few of these ships are coral reefs now- I think the Ponce may have been one of the last to be decommissioned in 2017.

16:01 Make sure you have someone with who served in whichever Branch you are interested in BEFORE you ever step foot in the Recruiters office. They have a quota to fill, and give not one flying $hit if you get Laundry, in USN back in the Stone Age were SH Designator. SK run supply so a LOT of lifting, AT SEA, of heavy breakable things.
NUMBER ONE, never SIGN anything without whomever former service member going over it with you AT LEAST twice. And make sure it makes it all the way to YOUR COPY.
Also DO NOT FORGET TO ASK about bonuses and advancement opportunities if you plan to do a career or at least 20yrs.
Make sure to ask about on board college too. Bigger boats will actually have professors and sug that live aboard. Correspondence courses for BASIC Junior Division requirements like English and such that EVERYONE takes can often be finished before you even get out. Foreign languages too and on a carrier or the ship in video there may even be Native Speakers on board teaching the class I exchange for English lessons to get their US Citizenship without doing so ILLEGALLY.
NEVER HEAR THAT ON TV THOUGH.

My goodness how can a 30 ton “tank” even come close to floating

How do you think the 40,000 ton ship comes close to floating? It's all about displacement, and water seals on the APC/AAV.

I read the new Marine Core Commander wants to get rid of all these systems, not a good thought process in my mind.

why though? most of these ships arent in battle so its just driving around consuming massive resources and requiring thousands of people to keep driving but whats the purpose?

Wouldn't it be easier to put a ramp on them to have a better weapons and fuel load out. Like HMS Queen Elizabeth

My squadron practiced ramp take offs. The ramp was set up at one of our auxiliary landing fields. The pilots had a blast practicing, but we never used one on board ship.

    • @rogerb3654

Having a ramp/ski-jump would limit the usable flight deck space for rotary wing and tilt rotor aircraft, The Navy & Marines did not want to give up a couple of rotary landing spots. Doctrinally....the goal is to GET MARINES ASHORE. The fighters are there to support that doctrine. In addition, the F-35Bs are STOVL (Short Take Off & Vertical Landing) capable and do fine without it.

Why compare an aircraft carrier to an amphibious landing ship? Why doesn’t a spoon have prongs like a fork….
