Are y'all planning on similar videos for other sports? These videos and the basketball one have taught me a lot and I would love to see how pros approach other sports.
These videos are remarkably well done and truly a service to anyone who shoots sports. Jaren -- I'm assuming that you eventually code replace your player names into the meta, yes?
Actually we don't add the names in with code replacement. Our graphic designers go through the photos and separate them into folders for each athlete, and then misc groupings like celebrations, crowd, etc. We are working on using AI to do the metadata tagging.
I am so thankful for all of your content here. If you need an assistant or extra pair of hands to do anything while you visit Morgantown and WVU this year, please reach out! Would love to shadow, carry batteries, or anything else!
Oh my gosh! The Card rename trick and the filename meta is smart! you have no clue how many times, it's the middle of the night and I'm looking at a card and comparing if it's already cataloged!
A quick note, when getting your photos into photomechanic in sync when using multiple cameras make sure the time and date in the cameras match up to each other, especially when you have traveled into a different time zone and want the camera data to record the images in local time. It would also be interesting to hear about how your approach changes during inclement weather. Over the years I'm sure you have had to shoot making games in a rain storm and a probably a few in a snow storm. One thing that you didn't really cover is in regards to injured players, some times an injured player can become a major development in a game, if you capture an injury during the live action what is your protocol, also with doctors and trainers attending to an injured player One last thing, I am not sure how you balance this out, toward the end of the game you went into the team bench area to get some shots. If a game has a lopsided score how do you balance those bench shots with getting shots of second or third team players in action. Those players may play in only a few games a year and that may be the only time you can get them in game action.Don't forget a scoreboard shot at the end of the game especially in a closely contested game or an upset.
1. weather often becomes part of the story, so if it starts raining/snowing I try to get detail shots of weather, overalls, play with fan perspective. 2. I usually take photos of docs and trainers working on players, walking them off the field, they always appreciate the photos at the end of the season. Gotta take care of the guys who will take care of you when the running back slams into you on the sidelines. 3. end of game is always a balance, at home I'll spend more time in bench area because I have other shooters watching the action, on road I'll prioritize 3rd stringers action more, unless it is a big win with lots of emotion.
indoor still shot at 1/1000 8000 iso?? you get the same results at 1/125 @ 1000iso. there’s no need to have such a high shutter speed to capture a non moving object. the iso is only making it grainy.
I'm not a US citizen but let me just say thanks to BYU. Not only did I improve my creative writing from watching the Brandon Sanderson Lectures on scifi and fantasy but now I can improve my sports photography from the same university. I really appreciate what you guys are doing for people in the creative fields
Also, if I can ask, I would have expected you had lightroom profiles or similar, to achieve a consistent look, game after game after game. a look that could become your brand. is this something you use in other instances?
Can you go into detail about your process of switching focus between players in this quick movements? Thats the main issue I have when shooting fast sports, my camera will focus on the wrong person and by the time I've got the camera focused correctly I miss the moment. I'm shooting on an R6 so same software. People coming across the frame and my focus jumping also sucks.
It’s to stop the manual focus ring from moving so you don’t knock it when shooting. 99.9 percent of the time you’ll use the the camera/lens autofocus system when shooting football.
Where do you position yourself to shoot DBs and safeties? I'm thinking closer to the line of scrimmage since further down the field or opposite goal line might have too many obstructions. I've been commissioned to shoot 2 DBs, free and strong safeties on same team, which are the most difficult in my opinion other than receivers. Thanks-Love your videos!
Hi Jaren, congratulations for the video and for the work done. I would like to ask you a question with which parameters (aperture priority, auto ISO, etc) do you usually take football photos?
very useful. I am puzzled why you had to crush magentas and purples, does it mean the camera got the wrong white balance? or just the uniforms are showing wear?
Wow. congarts! let me ask you about your focus point election? how many points? About your focus point selection, fully automatic? or do you choose zone focus?
Is there a trick or an easy way to synchronize the clocks on your cameras so that when you merge shots from multiple cameras afterward they are in the proper time sequence? I find that it's easy for the clocks my R6 and 5D3 to drift apart by several seconds/week so I end up with the run-back from an interception showing up BEFORE the interception because I shot them with different cameras. (Or is that something that can be addressed by Photo Mechanic on import... like "Subract 54 seconds from all selected photos"?)
I usually do it manually every few weeks, but you can use an ethernet cable to do it with the R3: cam.start.canon/ky/C010/manual/html/UG-06_Network_0140.html
@@byuphoto I'm pretty sure the Canon Connect smartphone app will update the time on my R6 but getting the 5D Mark iii (a much older camera) on the correct time isn't something I can do with an app or ethernet. Thanks so much for putting this video together. So detailed and interesting. I really loved the detail about carrying all the gear and the strap management. How do you manage storing your long lens on the sidelines? I would be so nervous about it getting damaged or stolen.
I try to keep my long lenses with me most of the time, depending on the stadium, the sidelines are pretty safe, but the risk of someone running into it or stepping on it is always high. Sometimes when I need to shoot an overall I'll set the lens down on the ground against the wall, but not often.
Don't know if it's something you want to discuss but how about tips and suggestions for workouts, stretches, and physical postures for not hurting yourself or straining things like knees and shoulders from shooting during a game (I've had to ice my patella tendon on my left leg twice a day since Friday night)? I figure it's more a matter of being a non-exercising cube-dweller and that walking the sidelines on Friday night is the most workout I have gotten of late but the knee pain stopped me from getting down/into a crouch so I ended up shooting standing up (I'm 6'5") which is less than ideal for football in general and high school in particular.
Definitely outside my wheelhouse, All I can say that I try to walk a lot during the week and I use knee pads on really hard sidelines. Your doctor could also recommend knee braces or other solutions, hope you feel better.
I don't photograph football, but I do for a marching band in the city where I live. I appreciate all the tips that I can use for, at times, fast moving musical performances that also take place on a football field. No one has tackled a tuba player yet, but I’ll be ready if it happens😂
