Perfectly accurate description of Panera - "It was mediocre, but it filled me up..." Or, as my dad used to say "It'll make a turd" ;) Thanks for the video, I've been on the verge of buying an ft-5dr for a minute and think I will now!
Excellent video! I just got this same radio today and coming from a VX-7R, which I still use after all these years, I had no idea how to set up the APRS. You just opened my eyes to a ton of fun. I literally followed along and now I'm having a blast! I'll definitely remember to turn it back off, I don't want to be "that guy". Lol
@PATRIA Y VIDA Yup! Been using it for 3 weeks now. Love the radio! Got the APRS set up from this video too, neat feature that I really don't use much but still fun.
On a road trip where I don't have to drive so plenty of time to play with APRS on the FT-5D. I wish there was a simple and clear turn APRS on or off rather than having to go through the menu to turn the modem and GPS on or off separately.
The line leading from the digipeater in Conroe n5luy-3 show the route the packet took to arrive at an igate. N5luy-3 does not send packets it hears directly to the internet. Purely a digipeater. Aprs can be alot of fun! And another ham radio rabbit hole! Thank for the video!
Hello everyone!!! I've just received my FT5DR Toy Today!!! I'm kind of LOST guys! It'll take me a while to figure it out... Thanks to videos like this one and others I'll be able to set it up... besides the Manual that came with it... 73s from KJ4BGW !!!
Excellent video, all info and no fluff!! If you could make one similar as to how to separate memory frequencies into separate, "scannable" individual banks that would be awesome. I basically have all my memories in one place, and can't figure out how to pick and choose the ones I'd like to have in a separate bank. 73
@@hamradiotube for example, to listen, I have marine vhf, gmrs and repeaters all programmed in, but they are all in one place, all in a row, I know it's possible to put each category into a separate bank and scan them individually if so desired. Now, off to buy a backpack, you bugger!
@@VE9ASN Yeah I know what you're talking about. It would require reading the nightmare that is the Yaesu manual. Boy is it poorly written. Enjoy your new backpack though lol!
quick question! I followed the setup but when I try to press the test BCN-TX button, nothing seems to happen. (no red light tx status). I do notice my GPS icon is flashing like it's searching for signal lock, so does that mean I can't TX APRS until the GPS is fully locked?
I love APRS on my Anytone 878UVII Plus. I use it to send emails, SMS messages and even Whatsapp messages when out and about. I never have a phone on me when out.
I got the sane radio and was thinking about trying APRS...Any good how to videos you could point me too? I'm a fairly new HAM, I got my tech back in April and my General in October..The 878UVii+ has so many features its insane...I hear people complain about its price but sometimes I put adapters on my coax at home and run the 878 through a Diamond X300-A and I am always blown away on what that little radio can reach on such low power....KI5USS 73
Hi! I'm thinking about getting into digital but I'm still kinda confused about what radio I should get... any suggestions guys? This one looks great...but I've been considering the F70DR too... Thanks for any advice. 73s from KJ4BGW !
@@JPA66 Thanks, Jim...and sorry for the newbie questions...When I transmit (beacon) on 144.390, what is on the receiving side? This is all analog, right?
There are a few videos out there that show how to set up ( and I appreciate K8MRD's video)...I'm not so much trying to understand how to set up but more so on how it works.
One thing I rarely see mentioned and would love to learn more about, is APRS messaging, I'm not sure if the FT5 does that, but it would be cool to see if it does. 73 thank you for all the videos.
Hi, ft5dr receive lat and long from the GPS and send using the RF. You no need WiFi. If you use your cellphone you need the connection to Internet to send you lat and long the cellphone receive from the GPS. This is the difference, if you walk on no cellphone coverage (no internet access) the only option is with the radio FT5DR 😂
I'm still trying to figure out why I would ever use APRS on my FT-5D, even though the radio is jam packed with stuff to use. Let me restate that. I'm not sure I would ever use APRS on anything.
Question: Do you need a call-sign to monitor APRS? I’m studying for the FCC Tech license, do not have a call sign(yet). I’m looking to purchase that Yaesu FT-5 ahead of time to use as a receiver until I get my license. But just wondering if I can monitor APRS. Thank you.
That is a really good question. I don't see why you wouldn't be able too, but I honestly don't know. The better person to ask would be Jason, KM4ACK. He has a RUclips channel www.youtube.com/@KM4ACK and does a whole lot with APRS.
Ham radio has gone stupid, control shift f5 to do anything. Oh what was that again to turn it on control shift x or was it control shift Y, I cant turn this on anymore. Not to mention who can read those tiny numbers and buttons anyway?.
Sorry I’m new on aprs my question is how you came up with number 7 when you was looking for yourself on aprs-fi where you enter the number 7 please let me know thanks 73. Ke6hij
"We're hams. There's a reason we don't throw anything away." - I'm going to test this on my better half.
Hahaha, good luck!
I can’t believe MRD just taught me how to set up my Aprs on my FT5D.
I’m the APRS master!
Just what I needed. Thank you for the no bs video on how to use APRS!
No problem!

Can the yaesu ft 5dr receive short wave radio? If so, are stations pre-programmed into it like they are in the yaesu vx-6r?

144.390 is the standard frequency for APRS in the US.
