In the older Armored Core games like 4 for example the pilots aren’t necessarily bodiless but have been augmented beyond recognition just to pilot an AC at full capacity. Most pilots in those games probably couldn’t exist outside of their ACs and so that plays into some really cool imagery, given the ACs are basically the bodies of those people. Nah, ac 1-3 which is the majority, people can get out of their AC. They showed that in Last Raven. And most pilots are not augmented in those generations. Just the very good ones as human + was a plot point and it's painfully clear when people have it. Also it just doesn't make sense because of how modular ACs are. That said, the pilots are never seen as having value beyond being a weapon. That and the Japanese thing of a weapon being more than an object.

Soul of Cinder is such a beautiful piece. Part of the reason the first "plink plink plonk" is so late into the piece is that it happens during phase 2. Early into the fight the boss rotates between different weapons and movesets, until phase 2. As soon as his health bar hits 0, he refills his health bar and pulls out Gwyn's weapon and adopts his moveset and stance. During this transition the track progresses into the iconic "plink plonk" section of the piece. The big reveal that you are fighting Gwyn at the end of the game is announced with "plink plink plonk". The King's Field track was giving me Momodora - Reverie Under the Moonlight vibes. As far as I can remember it has some quite similar sounding instrumentation. My favorite track btw is Fragmented Majesty, but it's not one of the ones I was thinking of that sound similar. Oh, something the guest says might explain my immediate association with Momodora, which I remember also featuring gothic architecture, boss battles etc., same as Robert is describing his interpretation of King's Field

Would recommend trying out King's Field 4/The Ancient City on the PS2 (or emulate). Super solid and still holds up in just about every way, not to mention a lot of mood songs scattered in that game.
Surprised that you've never reacted to Bloodborne's "The Hunter" track (the Father Gascoigne boss theme). As technically excellent as some of the other compositions are, that piece perfectly captures the accelerating, lilting, frenzied madness of Gascoine's losing himself to beasthood. That second phase where the music goes uptempo is amazing. I'd LOVE to hear Robert's and your take on that one.
The piano motif dropping in the middle of the Soul of Cinder battle, on the first blind playthru, I'll have that moment in my brain until the day I die.
After all the hardships, the tragedy, the friends lost on the way through DS1, and meeting Gwyn, not as a strong tyrant, but as a powerful but broken man who fought to keep his world alive. And that was emotional enough (depression allegory not withstanding). But then going through the different trials, hardships, and loss- only to meet the Soul of Cinder and have that cadence replay in the middle of the fight. It literally brings back all those old feelings of accomplishment and emotional struggle from the first game and then (I atleast) came to the conclusion that this Soul of Cinder is you. You are the finality of your ashen world. Dude, shit hit so hard that I had to pause and just soak it all in.
14:10 Is funny you mention big spaces because of I remember correctly this music starts after you have ventured underground and you have been fighting through corridors and small rooms. And then it opens up and you see the whole “Ancient City” and it’s shrouded in darkness.
These tracks are so good especially when you hear them on their own. You’re so invested in these fights with so many elements going on that you don’t really get to sit down and appreciate the music
i like that idea of listening to the OST before playing the game because i feel like the gameplay and visuals actually do influence a lot of how we perceive the soundtrack in a lot of ways. Most of the time when i listen back on OSTs from a game i love, it invokes memories of the boss encounters especially with Soulsborne/elden ring where teh boss fights are so cinematic and epic. To try and guess whats going on in the fight where the theme is from is a cool idea
Oh, very interesting version you've had there for the Cleric Beast. So that second part that you heard isn't actually in the game. The only reason we even have it is because it was in the pre-release network test of Bloodborne, so obviously Fromsoftware decided not to use it for whatever reason and instead go with that first half for the official release. It is certainly laden with a lot of sound effects and overall rather distorted, it's also more synth heavy but ultimately I do think there is something fascinating to that version. To me the synthy, distorted sounds and whispering encapsulate the cosmic horror aspects of Bloodborne really well and it gives a little glimpse at a Bloodborne sound that could have been.
The base song still rules, but I'm kinda' bummed to hear that version isn't in the final game. It's my favorite take on the song, and parallels the arc of the game's story.

Whether you do that or get another guest in for reactions, I'd love to hear these videos branch out to other games like Hollow Knight, Nioh, and maybe even atypical stuff like Another Crab's Treasure. Whatever you decide, best wishes.
Man, I'm a whole month or so late to this video, but the choice of tracks is so wonderful. I'm surprised you included the beta version of Cleric Beast that wasn't the final version (the first part you had) but man, this is so awesome to hear you and Robert talk about the music together. Soul of Cinder is one of my favourite Dark Souls pieces, there's a whole lot of favourites, but man. That build up to phase 2 with Gwyn's "Plin plin plon" just really hits home how important it is when SoC swaps out to Gwyn's moveset and sword. And honestly, it's such a wonderful tie in from Kitamura. She didn't have to include it, but she chose to in order to bring a close to the trilogy. It really sits as one of the best musical pieces to bring a close to a video game on its own, and a trilogy of games. Really hits all players of the games so perfectly. And I didn't notice the leitmotif of Demon's Souls being near identical to Radagon's theme until you mentioned it (I never played the original before Elden Ring) but it feels like another fantastic callback to their origins in the Soulsborne series, and Elden Ring being full of its references to the rest of the series makes that comparison all the more exciting for me to have heard. Definitely gained another subscriber, hearing musicians and singers talking about game music always gets me hooked on soundtracks more and more, especially with the way you're able to communicate how it works structurally gives me more hope for future musical scores in games.
Demon's souls is so iconic for me since I played when it first came out. The main theme warns you of the despair you will face and that there is no happy end - only a temporary relief to the agony of the world.
NGL, it kinda hurts my heart you never covered one of the most heart breaking songs in FromSofts history, Abandoned By The Gods(with dialogue). This piece really pulls on your heart strings and leaves a spot in your head about morality and the like throughout this game.
The Dark Souls 3 Firelink Shrine track puts me to sleep. It feels like this is the place you go to die, to finally tuck your life away besides a very faint fire, with the smallest warmth as your greatest comfort. The alternate track is much more dramatic in it's melancholy.
DS1(Bell Gargoyles and Ornstein and Smough), DS3( Abyss Watchers,Sister Friede and Dark Eater Midir), Bloodborne(Father Gascoigne, Dark Beast Paarl, The One Reborne and Living Failures)
Just here to say that Rough and Decent is an INSANELY underrated track of AC6. I am talking specifically about the regular version, not the one named "bad joke".
One fascinating thing about LobosJR is he is an auditory learner. He has in fact created a mostly complete mod for Dark Souls 1 in which all the soundtracks are replaced with Acapella versions performed by him!
In all Armored Core games, pilots control their machines from internal cockpits, unless otherwise specified. Even many AI units adhere to this, though the smarter ones obscure their nature and keep backup mechs. I'm pretty sure there's also at least one example of a Human Plus pilot (a cyborg) being seen outside a mech. How "wired in" Human Plus pilots are can change between games. AC6 in particular has its protagonist on life support inside their mech, but implies they are fighting to get a costly surgery that gives them their autonomy back.
Yes. When a pilot is trapped inside their AC as life support or downloaded into an AI to control their AC, it is presented as a big deal and not the norm even during ACVD where the transhumanism aspect took center stage.
i don't remember Robert reacting to Slave Knight Gael, in case its the case, i would love hearing his thoughts after hearing Slave knight Gael ost for the first time
i love cleric beast because it has actual meaning, its gospel of the healing church and the beast was a cleric before it transformed healing church members turned into the most monstrous beasts like the cleric beast, so hearing this gospel about how the holy blood cures diseases and that beasts are a result of blasphemy and sin while fighting it, when it actually is a result of the blood itself, makes it even more powerful similar with laurence, he was a founding member and the first to turn into a cleric beast, the song is a warning that the blood is no good and that they should be careful, even thought they rely on its healing properties
I thought you guys were talking about Civ for a few seconds. If you haven't listened to the music from the Civilization series you are missing out(Baba Yetu especially, but I feel it unlikely you've missed that one).
You had it backwards. Not surprising, they had like 8 games where you where underground but in Armored Core For Answer, humanity lives on flying cities called Cradles. But ppl who are poor an the NEXT pilots who are deemed too dangerous to let into paradise are condemned to a life on the surface. Which is why Someone is Always Moving on the Surface is so melancholy. Armored Core pilots kind of depend on what generation of game your talking about but all of them have bodies. Gen 1-3 as far as I know your just a normal person. The big wow thing in that story was a plot relevant easy mode where you get augmentation with the human + project. Jist of it, is it lets you pilot your ac far better than normal pilots but you get controled by an ai and/or go crazy and some of the best pilots are human +. AC 4 you're a psychic augmented human. AC V your just a normy. AC 6 it was back to human augmentation. Your brain is augmented with a substance that lets you control machines better but gives you mental issues. All that said, out side of comics, books, and that 1 scence in Last Raven., you never see the ppl that pilot ACs.
Loved Cleric beast. Ah yes, normal music lemme listen along. Hmm. Something is wrong. No, I don't like this. Why is this so wrong. It must be destroyed. If I do not destroy it, I will no longer be whole.
Demons souls remake OST really is slept on. I'd love to hear marco's thoughts on maiden astraea, flamelurker, storm king, penetrator etc i could go on but man i love that soundtrack
It isn't it's just in tone it's not demons souls and the fan base for demons souls is now split into 2 camps those who think the new osts are the best (mainly newer players) and those who think it doesn't fit and was just to damn much overproduction mainly demons souls fans that have criticized the game heavily for butchering so much of the originals atmosphere
So please stop saying a generic ost yes maybe the same composer but he flopped hard on every ost in terms of tone. Now everything tries to be bloodborne and ds3 and it's just trash
The Paris concert was unfortunately mid compared to like the Zelda or FF ones.. But they're also new! Who knows, in the future. Also, Distant Worlds is the best gaming concert by far imo. You can feel the love.
Oh Marco why the hell the remake ost. Especially the title track, which is tooooootally different. And most obviously, why showing something that's not from's work in a video about FromSoftware.
Probably never gonna come across this one so here it is : ruclips.net/video/5LHLAcd14b4/видео.htmlsi=tj2c_q12EzGiNIr- Arcanum, a CRPG made by the creators of Fallout 1 and 2 games. Its purely strings. Nothing special about it really and that is probably why i like it so much. You can pay attention to it and it has enough depth to be interesting but you can also not pay attention to it and play the game without it being monopolizing to your earing sense.
i feel that you read too deeply into the context of "something is always moving above". For Answer releasef 3 years before the original Dark Souls. What you did was extrapolate. One is welcome to extrapolate anything they like from any media. My issue is that you misrepresented your extrapolation as a less subjective context. I assume it was not intentional, and it doesn't particularly bother me, i just felt the impulse to point it out.
The Demon's Souls soundtrack is defo being slept on. By you as well, to be honest, because the remake OST sucks compared to the original. Sure the original sounds like crappy synths and samples, but the style and tone of the music is just so much more original. You should definitely check it out.
And the funny thing is, the original Demon Souls OST for the most part is actually done with a small orchestra, with all the players credited in the end. Those goofy trumpets were real.
Totally agree. The Demon's Souls remake is beautiful and lush and radiant... and completely loses the somber, oppressive grayness of the original game's setting. The remixed music commits the same sin; the Demon's Souls soundtrack should never be bombastic. And what Bluepoint did to the Tower Knight soundtrack is nearly unforgivable. Fun fact: to capture the bleakness and diminishment of the world of Boletaria, the original music was written and arranged for a full 80-piece orchestra, but then performed by a much smaller chamber orchestra to leave it feeling hollowed out and spread too thin. That's a brilliant idea. And then Bluepoint came along and cranked it to 14, making it sound like Lord of the Rings had a baby with Wagner. So much for musical storytelling.
Fun fact and great attention to detail about the Lord Gwyn Theme: to express Lord Gwyns fear of the darkness, the entire theme is played by using only the white keys!
Really? That's such a creative idea

a game that he should try is the lies of p
Marco also suggested this! I will check it out after Bloodborne...
@@roberttuohy1387 just one thing about the game, lies of p, looks like bloodborne, but plays like sekiro, you need to get good at parrying.
@@soulbro55 Sounds perfect! Sekiro's combat system is my favorite of the Soulsborne games :)
@@roberttuohy1387 awesome, have fun ;)
Cleric Beast is the only soulsborne boss I remember beating the first time I ran into it.
Secret Betrayal is easily the best nexus music in all FromSoftware, you should show him that one.
i don't remember Robert reacting to Slave Knight Gael, in case its the case, i would love hearing his thoughts after hearing Slave knight Gael ost for the first time
i love cleric beast because it has actual meaning, its gospel of the healing church and the beast was a cleric before it transformed
healing church members turned into the most monstrous beasts like the cleric beast, so hearing this gospel about how the holy blood cures diseases and that beasts are a result of blasphemy and sin while fighting it, when it actually is a result of the blood itself, makes it even more powerful
similar with laurence, he was a founding member and the first to turn into a cleric beast, the song is a warning that the blood is no good and that they should be careful, even thought they rely on its healing properties
Yeah
Great choices, but really wish you showed him the ORIGINAL Demons' Souls Main Theme, and not the one from the Remake.
1:48:30 what the hell happened to the cleric beast that scared me
I thought you guys were talking about Civ for a few seconds. If you haven't listened to the music from the Civilization series you are missing out(Baba Yetu especially, but I feel it unlikely you've missed that one).
not going to lie, the cleric beast without the screams isn't the same
A shame DS3 main theme wasn't included, maybe next time.
Non DS2 themes ? :'/ have a lot of magnificents songs, Longing, Sir Alone, Aldia, worshippers, majula,
Demons souls remake OST really is slept on.
In Déraciné, I like 〝Everyone's Concer〞
In Bloodborne, I like 〝Father Gascoigne, The Hunter〞
I think new Demon Soul ost loss its original feature
no Laurence?
Ludwig's theme is better when you don't duplicate the halves to make a makeshift extended version.
I disagree, I love the fakeout buildup
It saddens me that noone ever speaks about Tenchu, also FromSoftware
The Paris concert was unfortunately mid compared to like the Zelda or FF ones.. But they're also new! Who knows, in the future. Also, Distant Worlds is the best gaming concert by far imo. You can feel the love.
Oh Marco why the hell the remake ost. Especially the title track, which is tooooootally different. And most obviously, why showing something that's not from's work in a video about FromSoftware.
He said Miyazaki, is that Hiyato Miyazaki who worked on movies such as Spirited Away?
No, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the Souls series
Ah, ok
@@slinttu1378 Huh, that's interesting. Guess that adds to the unique brass sound of many of the pieces :)
@@RutabagaSwedemons souls was orchestra the dark souls franchise actually uses more sampling per title than both des and bloodborne.
Yeah I love DeS soundtrack
So much for musical storytelling.
love this guy
