I’ve read dune and I felt a lot of the changes were unnecessary. However, dune part 2 gave me one of the best theater experiences of my life to a point where it was hard for me to give a shit.
as somebody who's seen it in imax theaters too, I really have no idea how so many people thought the experience of watching that movie was so insane and mind blowing.
@@thegercast4794 Same. I watched the first one and was just kinda like "meh". I then read the book and thought it was so much better the movie is not worth watching. I'm glad people got enjoyment out of the movie, but Villeneuve's Dune is not for me
The correlation between spice and worms is not a known general fact in the books... Not even Paul completely knew. We find out the details and things only become more clear during Letho 2nd's pilgrimage and transformation.
Well, his Attack on Titan opinion was bad too, because he misremembered key plot points and character interaction at the end. After he reread parts of it, he just double-downed on his previous opinion.
There's criticisms to be made of Villeneuve's Dune through comparison with the books but I'm not a huge fan of "It's bad because it wasn't like how I imagined it in the books" ala your complaint about Ornithopters, and complaining that they didn't show the Battle of Arrakeen in enough detail when the books made an intentional note to basically have it happen entirely between chapters makes it impossible to take any other criticisms of the movie based on thematic or literary parallels to the books or lack thereof seriously, because you've already criticized the movie for essentially adhering TOO closely to the books by largely skipping the Battle of Arrakeen.
"Why do stupid nerds online care so much about lore! Narrative, plot and aesthetics should come first during an adaption!" "REE ORNITHOPTER!" Their discussion on the philosophy is interesting but the complaints on small stuff can be silly.
it depresses me that those movies exist, it depresses me how many people love them. genuinely, i'm seriously, deeply, bothered, angered and demoralized by that. it's disgusting.
I was so unimpressed by every part of dune 2... everything I saw was something I wanted to be over to see what was next. Somehow, you made an epic space battle movie with giant army-crushing worms and nuclear bombs in an IMAX theater something I could probably sleep through if so challenged.
I agree, it was honestly amazing, first time I went to the theater in a long time, and it was so worth it. I finished listening to the video, I don't really think they made great points. I like to keep an open mind, even with things I enjoy.
Ya know what, The big melee at the end of the second film is so silly it actually reminds me of the side-scrolling fight in Kung Fury. All the (supossedly) elite soilders just milling about in a state of mild confusion while the protage just kind of waltzes through.
Even if you disregard the accuracy to the original books (I am not a dune supernerd so I went in as a film fan), Timothee Chalamet was completely unconvincing as this “Messiah” figure and his character progression was as abrupt and jarring as Anakin Skywalker’s in the Star Wars prequels. The final battle was also one of the most insulting events in a movie as well received as this movie.
Villeneuve is a great filmmaker, and you are not looking at his work as a standalone artwork, which it is. Blade Runner is not even close to the source material either, but it is still a great film. To adapt a novel, this is kind of what you must do. Narrow it down, simplify and change things, to keep things interesting and fit within a reasonable time limit.
I really like Villeneuve Dunes in terms of esthetics, ambiance, spectacle and what the story does in the movies. But I've not read the books and it will not surprise me that the complexity of the plot and the deepest meaning is lost on the screen. The question is : does a movie adaptation have the same goal as a book ? Can it be possible ?
I didn't read the books but I cult liked the first Dune. These movies are just awesome to watch. Also I don't give a fuck about you trying to learn the underlying philosophy of right wingers who write science fiction. Oh do Starship Troopers next then.
I liked that bit in the 1st dune when the guy calls Paul by the fremen name and his weapon goes off and Paul likes that his name is a killing word. The new ones are prettier but not as deep. I stayed away from the series on HBO, but recently decided to watch since 2nd season approved. Coming at it as original material, it was enjoyable.
I don't know if I'd say the latest Dune movies are a problem. I would say that after Lynch's version and the SyFy miniseries another telling of Dune was unnecessary. Plus, you know, the actual books. Stop waiting for Hollywood to tell you existing books are good, people. Especially when they've been hits for decades.
@@PresidentSunday I mean, yeah, but that also involves introducing this whole worm life cycle part that was in the book, the pre spice mass and its interaction with the water of life iirc, and the name of the game in the movies was to make it more digestable by not throwing 80 different concepts at you at once, like the previous adaptations and, let's face it, the book, did. Saying "I'm gonna nuke the spice fields" is just reusing the nukes we know they have and giving them this new purpose, same idea. You can tell me it wouldn't be as effective based on book lore, but based on what the movie gives you, it's enough.
That's interesting because I feel the opposite way. Part 2 was one of the very few movies I've sat there in the theater watching and genuinely feeling like I was just being fed pig slop. Nothing blew my mind. I didn't feel eager to chat about anything in the film to the people I was with when i came out of that IMAX theater. 100% honest.
i actually think one of the problems is that the movies *didn't* betray the book's original philosophy *enough.* lynch was my introduction to dune, so the grimdark, nihilistic, cynical "no such thing as heroes" thing was never what dune was for me. i always saw it as a story about a hero rising up against injustice and corruption. and i do NOT appreciate how much they made it look and feel like that's what it was going to be in the trailers for part 2, how pumped it gets you for the epic scale, hardcore intensity action, and then how denis spits in your eye for two hours for wanting that from the movie when you're actually sat down in the theater. for example, i often think about the moment when they find the nukes in the cave, and how it's not a triumphant, hopeful moment where the plucky rebels get the upper hand over the bad guys, it's another moment where you're supposed to look over at paul and go "no, don't even think about it!" the movie's no fun. not at all. it's so miserable and cynical. i hate it. and if that's what dune's actually supposed to be, well then i guess i hate dune itself.
Hey, finally something that Sunday and Destiny can agree on! Both having terrible takes about the Dune movies!

Don't worry, as a leftist content creator you are allowed one utterly dogshit media take, we understand.

Driving me back into the arms of Westside Tyler.

Dune: Part Two is the best movie I've seen in ten years.

Blade Runner is incredibly boring
People like you are why we get rise of Skywalker
Just because The Rise of Skywalker was bad doesn't mean The Last Jedi was good.
I liked the ending where it suddenly started raining
I guess they're both angry and protective in a sort of threatened by popular consumption of nerdy properties sort of way. Whatever.

Hey Sunday you once talked about a book on Japan, do you remember which book you meant
Destroying the spice deposits was in the book
Paul threatens to poison the worms in the book. Nuking the spice fields would do literally nothing except ruin a few harvests.
