what came next for Protectionist is even more unbelievable... he had a disastrous year in Australia, didn't win anything, and returned to Andreas Woehler in Germany for the 2016 season. There, his Trainer managed to get him back in shape... Protectionist won 3 more races in Germany that year, including one Group 2 and the Group 1 Großer Preis von Berlin. A masterpiece of training, in my opinion.

and Admire Rakti died 5 minutes after the race and the other horse Araldo was sent to the vets in need of serious treetment but sadly didn't make it

Yes he did. Something happened to him just before the turn. Until then he gave a great sight.
Ally Wildgoose You can see before 2:40 he was running second the whole time. Then he just dropped back completely into oblivion. I don't even know if the last horse on camera was him or if they couldn't be bothered waiting. I know it didn't save the horse but it was the right decision by the jockey. He could have thought stuff it, 800m I'm going to make him go for it and win. And then there was a freak accident 10 minutes later because some stupid parent didn't stop their kid from waving a flag in a highly strung very large animal's face.

The run from Perfectionist was fantastic. The last 400 - 500m in particular. Started the last turn in the pack than found a gap in the field and absolutely pierced it. Finished strongly as well. Looked like it still had a bit in it

That same 'idiot' was there all day. 100 plus horses before that passed by without incident. It was an awful turn of events, and measures have been put in place to prevent recurrence. An idiot with a flag though is one of a multitude of similar situations a horse will come across on race day, especially at a day like the Melbourne Cup. Fluffybunny Ibenico died of a heart attack in a paddock at home. Is that cruelty also?

i picked protectionist out of a hat. i swapped with my brother to who i betted on but then he changed his mind and we swapped back. that move lost him 70 bucks
