    Very useful video as I was always looking to get the Leica M6, but the M4-P is almost identical except for the built-in light meter which isn't really a biggy since I shoot sunny-16. M4-P is now on the cards!

    I think I read one of your audience members remark that his M6 batteries drained rapidly. It's worth reminding folks that the M6 meter remains on for 10 seconds if the shutter is cocked. One way to switch it off is to set the shutter speed dial to B, or unscrewing the battery holder to break contact, otherwise, touching the shutter release will reactivate the meter. Each reactivation lasts 10 seconds. It switches off when the camera is fired.

    Great review as always. I own a M4-P and M-P and use them both about equally as much. They both perform perfectly. I also own M10 which is being neglected as I use it less and less. Using film has really made me more aware of my surroundings, and essentially I have slowed down in my photography. I am being more observant and careful when composing and framing. Yeah I would say I am enjoying photography more whilst using film. I have been asked which I would prefer (M4-P or M-P) and that is a really hard question to answer. It depends on my mood and how much time I have to do my photography. If I am really taking my time then I use the brilliant M4-P with a KEK's KMQ Light-meter. But I find this light-meter reads a few stops off what I am after in my style of photography. I do like the M-P and it is a bit more stealthy than compared to the M4-P. I have fitted a Soom rewind lever; pre-brassed black version and which speeds up rewinding the film. So all in all both M4-P and M-P are brilliant film range finder cameras. I had planned to purchase the M-A instead of the M-P but I was drawn to it having the built in light meter. I know some people do not like the brassing effect you get with the black paint on the M-P, but I like it so hence I own the M-P. I have a friend who owns the original M6 and his light meter is not fully operational and Leica said they can not replace or fix it. That put me off buying a vintage M6. I wanted to own a digital Leica and I have the M10. I wanted to own a new Leica film and that is the M-P and also a vintage film and which is the M4-P. Although my eyes have slowly worsened over the years so I have have the Light Lens Lab 1.4x Viewfinder Magnifier, which thanks to you I would not have been aware of this magnifier. Thanks again and keep these wonderful and informative videos coming.

      Is the light meter on top pretty accurate ? Just dial in the film speed, pick the shutter speed, and it tells you which aperture to be at ?! Or....?

    • @ton1911
      @ton1911 4 года назад +1

      @@TopshelfJunior It's fairly accurate. First you set the ASA-ISO. There is a button you press to get a reading either at a low light or bright light with a selector. A needle is activated and settles to segmented bars that indicated your light reading after you release the button. All you do is align the choice of aperture to that bar zone, then the dial gives you the shutter speed solution. It's great for general reflected light reading of an area, landscape, street, a room. It depends to what level of measurement perfection you seek. The problem with these meters is the battery. It's the old 1,35V mercury type that powers them. You can find alternatives to that issue. I'll let you go through that research yourself...it's complicated. Maybe our host, Mr-Leica, will pick one up and do a discovery review on them.

    • @TopshelfJunior
      @TopshelfJunior 4 года назад +1

      @@ton1911 Oh ok.. Thanks for the reply !!! I thought the meter on top, once it settles...it tells you what aperture to be at.. I didn't know it tells you which aperture AND shutter speed to dial in.. I figured you set ASA first, pick a shutter speed second, meter third, aperture fourth, take the photo fifth.. Got it tho ! Gonna buy one and figure it out lol..

    Tell me, I have a 1956 Canon VT Deluxe, and a 1962 Canon 7, and my pride is my Yashica YF, and two Contax II, and III. Should I get rid of them and get a Leica M2 instead since that I rather use an external Light meter in which they are the Minolta Autometer III, and Sekonic L28c2 in which they have with me since my City College days in 1975 to today, as I also have my Nikon System in which I rather keep the lens for my Digital models. And what do you think? Since I have been doing photography since 1972, and that I use my cameras in both Film, and Digital uses, Do you think that it might make a change to my shooting? I do not think so. After seeing this video that Yes you are thinking like a Leica, as also that after I received my degree in photography that I did do Fashion after seeing the film Bilits from Fame Photographer David Hamilton (Love his Work, RIP too) that in the fil it shows a actor using a Leica M4, But that is not the point, the point is that Hamilton photo work taught me in using color, and softness with light, and also music from the film that I use it in my fashion work, but as luck would have it that in after seeing one of my friends as they were models, that one got Rape in Italy, and the other contracted HIV+ that Fashion was not for me. So I got a job working at a Camera Store in San Francisco, and I have to tell you this that it was the Happiest 34 years working there, as for my co-workers that yes I had to start from the bottom as I was working in the Warehouse but working with the very BEST co-workers as for one worker Frank Baker(RIP) he told me that any camera will do the job right as it is a tool to visual use to Capture the Image.. As also working at the camera store that we did had a person sales person that was like you, but he had his own display case, knew about Lecia from a to Z, as I wanted to hold one of them, and he would not let me, instead he would polished the camera bodies, clean the lenses, and you would never seen a person loving the camera, - well things got worst that one morning I seen him ripping one of the photo magazines back cover as it shown of a another camera store selling the M series line less than we were were selling, and got us in hot water that the magazine was ready to sued the us, but we had to get rid of him he was bad luck. And yes I did get Leica reading material for my self, and reading it from cover to cover, but also read the history of Nikon, and Canon, and Hasselblad, and Graflex, and Rollei, and on and on until I was walking Encyclopedia of photography. You see I have 1500+ photography books in my collection, and to tell you I'm not Geek, I rather do my photography in whatever CAMERA I am using...
    After that with my Co-workers my teachers, my family my best friends I say Thank You, and missed you guys, Got That Leica Guy as the Camera is to capture the Image - repeat THE IMAGE. The Lecia - It is not a Sex toy or a Chick Magnet in which I have seen them at the Leica gallery in San Francisco.The M series model is a camera, and tool - as My co-workers have shown me the works of Robert Frank, Gene Smith, Ansel Adams, Cole Weston in which I got to meet, and served him, Yousuf Karsh, Jim Marshall, Herman Leonard, Jack Welpott, Linda Connor, and Joe Rosenthal in which he was living in Marin County as he use a 4X5 Graflex as to others, as they I seen their work as to Jim Marshall (RIP) He would show up to see us, and by 20 rolls of TX for a shoot, and seeing his Leica all Brassy in which that is Dedication to his work if he seen you that you be shitting in your pants. Sorry. And that I do have a Leica Its a IID OK, and And as Scotty would say: "Are You Daft Man" - As I would Never Get rid of my Rangefinders Babies OK, I'm Keeping them as in 2005, and 2006 I took my Canon 7, and my Contax II with me to Japan, and in the Philippines in 2008, and had the best time shooting with my children, yea I call my cameras my children to the 110 format that I heavily use it in high school for candids but I did use 35mm Rangefinder in High School to medium then to large Format OK, I cannot stand people who talk, eat, and sleep with their Leicas, and I have seen documentaries of the camera on DW-TV, and NHK-World of photographers that talk about the Images, not the camera the IMAGES as these are the true shooters, I do not not know about you? But remember in what Fame Photographer Edward Steichen said: "No Photographer Is As Good As The Simplest Camera" I rather see another You Tuber page called "Analog Insights" that yes he sometimes demo the Leitz models, but he also demo's ALL CAMERAS and LENSES with SHOWING NO EGO.. Bye. Oh it's time to watch Dark Shadows on the Decades Channel. Great Series - See Ya....

      Alex Carrillo hi Alex, thanks for your thoughts. Yes my blog name (and now RUclips name) is probably a little misleading. I can see you’ve not visiting the blog or seen other videos as you are not aware that I use any camera. I have over 50 film cameras in all formats and only maybe 1/5 are Leicas. I don’t polish or have glass cabinets. I’m a user. I’m just as happy with my £50 Soviet rangefinder as a Leica body for most photos but yes for some lenses I need certain camera bodies. I have 5 35mm Nikons, MF, LF. They will all be mentioned in time on the channel but I’ve only just started so it will take time. You won’t find someone more passionate about their photography so maybe stop by again in 6 months and re-evaluate. You’ll see the I’m passionate about whatever camera I talk about (see the Rolleiflex video as a great example). And to answer your original question. Should you sell all your cameras and buy a Leica. No. You will only miss them and buy again. Buy a Leica in addition as an investment if you had the funds maybe but if not no as multiple cameras offer much more variety. I have a similar Canon RF btw. All the best. Matt

    You should revisit these reviews and cameras now that you are even more charismatic and have more cameras to compare them against. If the rest of your audience is anything like me, you could remake every video and I would watch them all again. Lol

    I hated my M6, for its crappy lightmeter and its devouring batteries, plus putting in the film was a drag.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Sorry for my late reply. No, I bought a R6 with a Elmarit 28-70 zoom (latest model, and very nice!). I got a Leica lllA from my father when I was 15, used it for many years, and because of my wildlife photography, I bought Leicaflexes. The viewfinder of the SL is the brightest on the analogue market. Back to the M6. You write on your site that the film got jammed in your M6 after some 25 exposures. I had exactly the same problem. The fact is, in the M6 (and other models as well?) the film is not only pulled by the right sprocket but also pushed by the one on the left side. I think that that must be the problem. If the "speed" of both sprockets in not the same, the film gets stuck. That is why I sold the M6, together with the cumbersome film loading and the crappy lightmeter and the battery life. My truest love is and remains my Leica lllA. Thanks for your videos and all the info on your site, you're doing a great job!

    A pair of black dancing Leicas
    Two huge white hands
    A big white head
