  • In this clip from his feature chat with Jian Ghomeshi, Ethan Hawke reflects on how he was affected by Robin Williams' passing, how his early collaboration with him on Dead Poet's Society shaped his career, and how even as a young man he could sense that he was in pain.

People are bashing Ethan because he was actually articulate and in depth with his thoughts. I thought he brilliantly explained his admiration for Robin and it came across well.

Ethan hits it on the head, what really blows me away is that very notion that, someone who gave us so much joy, so much laughter was missing that very same thing in himself. As stupid as it may sound, that is what I can't seem to get my head around, even though I know that one does not always mean the other.

I cried for Freddie Mercury and Robert Palmer too. Those people made me feel glorious as human and happy and joyeous. And in such moments I'd like to remind all of us about the other side - the politicians and governements - who destroy lives and make us miserable and poor and dead - and still we praise them, A travesty of life. And as much as I don't liek Justin Bieber or Beyoncee - those people never dropped a bomb on a village and that makes them much better persons than any of the warmoger scum. Ever heard of them being depressed about that and ending their lives coz of guilt? No.

Me too, and recently Anthony Bourdain. It hits especially hard when they are mentors. I watched for his travels and food yes, but mostly for his wonderful viewpoints about LIFE! So when HE went it really messed me up. If this man with a dream occupation is not happy, what are my chances?? Sorry if I spin anyone. This is my world. Secondly, as a collective conscious society, I feel like WE let these two wonderful people down, maybe by not "hearing" them before it was too late?
      Too deep?

You could really pickup on the pain in Ethan's eyes. You can't "act" that. His very raw and real pain is showing through. The whole world lost a beautiful soul that tragic day. I am sure those who knew him well and had worked with him, as Ethan did (And many other's), that this was a real blow. My heart, still goes out to his family and friends....... Robin, may your soul FINALLY rest in peace, brother! The whole world still loves you!

Posted this in many Robin You Tube tributes before. I had the sheer pleasure of meeting this wonderful soul during my one & only extra work on this movie Man Of The Year. At the end of the evening he came over, shook the hand, asked the name & how we were doing of each & every extra there. You could tell it was something he not only wanted but loved doing. It was a pretty long bus ride home around 12:30-1 AM but I was star struck . It is a moment I have treasured even more since his passing. Bangerang oh captain my captain. See you in Neverland. I miss you Robin but know you are in a better place !!

I have a new found respect for Ethan Hawke just because of this heartfelt interview. For those of us who still felt their hearts pricked when reminiscing about Robin Williams, don't let depression sneaked up on you or try to mask it or hide it. People watch you and people know. It's ok to share what is in your mind, even though they might not understand.

Depression probably played a part in his death, but the major factor was an undiagnosed form of dementia called Lewy body dementia. If I remember correctly, it can also mimic some parts of Parkinson's disease, so he may have been misdiagnosed.

But I believe he turned to all of us who love him to get us through his tough times. If any of you have watched his wife's interviews, he was going through more than depression. He had a form of agressive dementia. I am sure that he wanted to exit before he was unable to do what he loved the most. Make us all laugh!!! To me....that is the height of bravery......I will always love the man....

So many of the truly great, unique comedians do have a whole lot of internal "pain" going on, and maybe doing comedy is their way of trying to exorcise their devils. There is so much going on inside their heads all the time and that stuff collides with each other and makes it kind of hard for the person to deal with himself. Makes for great comedy but burns out the person.

best description of GOOD acting I have ever heard and once you feel that 'thrill' somehow you never forget it...it's kind of odd actually... it is an out of body experience... nowadays of course it is heartbreaking for us as an audience that with MOST big hollywood movies and with most big hollywood actors , especially male but female actors too, we as the audience do not get to receive that 'thrill' that Ethan Hawk is talking about , I am not at all worried of course about those kind of actors , for them that kind of thrill beings and ends with their big fat paycheck, that they got by using everything they have except GOOD acting...and THAT is the only problem with that...

I think he has a point; one of the tragedies of suicide imo is that with a twist of fate (a random thought or memory, a dog barks outside, the phone rings, the attempt fails, etc.) the person falls out of the mind-set and is glad to be alive. Many times, if I had a gun I'd have done it, but I didn't and I"m glad I didn't. But I know what you mean, there was at this point an extensive morbidity at play and his brain was compromised. Poor guy. [edit: added "etc."]

It was Lewy body dementia that killed Robin Williams, not depression.

Yes. You're right. The super illuminati lizard overlords assassinated Robin Williams.
It definitely couldn't have been the fact that he was depressed, and having been recently diagnosed with cancer, decided to take his own life . A fact everyone close to him has acknowledged.
Don't turn the death of one of my favourite actors, and one of the brightest sparks of humanity to touch many of our lives in recent history, into another one of your stupid fucking conspiracy theories. Sometimes things are just shit. You're born into this world, you take a few gulps of oxygen, you wear a suit and drive fast cars (if you're lucky) and then you die. No lizard overlords. No army of robots or some shit. Just death.
We're not sheeple. We're just not desperate to believe ghost stories.

Lemon Grab, just for the record the disease that killed Robin Williams was Lewy Body dementia, which is incurable and fatal. Had he not taken his own life, he would most certainly have been dead from that disease.

This is the most pretentious thing I have ever seen.
