“Misirlu” (Greek: Μισιρλού, Turkish: Mısırlı, Arabic: مصر Miṣr) is a folk song from the Eastern Mediterranean. The original author is unknown, but Arab, Greek and Jewish musicians performed it as early as the 1920s. The first known recording of the song was made in 1927 by the Greek rebetiko musician Theodotos ("Tethos") Demetriades. This folk hit became popular among the Arab-American, Armenian-American, and Greek-American communities that settled in the United States since the 1920s. In 1946, the song became a hit thanks to the performance of American pianist and xylophonist Jan August. However, “Misirlu” gained worldwide popularity thanks to Dick Dale's 1962 American surf rock version, which was inspired by an early Arabic version played on the oud. Various versions of the song have been recorded since then, including surf rock versions by bands such as the Beach Boys, Ventures and Trashmen, as well as exotic orchestral versions by musicians such as Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Interestingly, the name “Misirlu” comes from the Turkish word “Mısırlı”, which means “Egyptian”. However, the word “Mısırlı” itself has no gender in Turkish, and it simply means “Egyptian”. So the song is about a woman from Egypt. If you are interested in a movie with the title “Misirlu”, then a movie with this title was released in 2017, which combines the horror, fantasy, action and war genres.
Pump it: From the hood Misirlou (Dick Dale): Surfing music Misirlou (Tetos Demetriados): Either the mafia era (specifically, The Godfather) or ancient Greece
@AImighty_Loaf yes you are right, her name is Misirlou and he's talking about how he's gonna "steal her" from her people... can't understand much tho cause it's such an old recording and his voice is very low
There are a lot of schlocky versions of this tune. Tetos's is the best I've heard. Most of the others make it sound Hollywoodish, corny, like a caricature of the Middle East. Tetos really wails it, makes it sweet (but not sappy or saccharin) and pungent, aromatic. You feel the Mediterranean pulsing in your blood.
This song came out almost a hundred years ago

It’s actually take from oriental folklore in Abbasid one thousand nights
Looks so similar to Persian classical songs
Funny
Also known as Arabian Nights
it definitely sounds similar persian/central asian/indian folk music specifically with its chord progressions and the mode it's in

I honestly thought this version weird, not bad, but it has creepy vibes. The dick version still my favorite
well said! This is far superior to any version that has followed.
