  • Kari Northey, a funeral director and embalmer (Mortician), takes a tour of Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of the largest cemeteries in the world!
"In the 1830s and 1840s, Cincinnatians were saddened by the recurrence of the cholera epidemic. The crowded and sometimes unkempt appearance of many of the small church cemeteries in the basin area offered little comfort to bereaved families. Many of the leaders in the professional and industrial enterprises of the city expressed their concern over the lack of proper interment facilities.
Resulting from this concern, members of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society formed a cemetery association in 1844. They endeavored to find a location suitable for creating a picturesque park like institution, a rural cemetery, contiguous to the city yet remote enough not to be disturbed by expansion. They sought to acquire enough land to be used for funerary purposes into the indefinite future, which could be embellished with shrubbery, flowers, trees, walks, and rural ornaments. These men traveled throughout the United States and Europe visiting cemeteries of outstanding reputation and beauty as they planned a cemetery that would equal the famed beauty of Pere-Lachaise in Paris, and various outstanding cemeteries on the East Coast of the United States.
On December 1, 1844 Salmon Chase and others prepared the Articles of Incorporation. Chase lobbied with legislators, persuading them to grant a charter for a non-profit nondenominational corporation, which was granted by a special act on January 21, 1845. At the consecration ceremony the founders publicly proclaimed their hope that the natural setting would be a contemplative atmosphere conducive to consolation, commemoration, and education. The first interment was made September 1, 1845.
In 1987, Spring Grove officially changed its name to "Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum" to include the expansive collection of both native and exotic plant materials as well as its State and National Champion Trees and its Centenarian Collection. Today, Spring Grove encompasses 733 acres of which approximately 450 acres are beautifully landscaped and maintained. The remaining undeveloped acres ensure the permanence of the cemetery for hundreds of years.
Since its founding over 150 years ago, Spring Grove has remained a leader in cemetery design and management. The landscape "lawn plan" concept was created here. Although it was considered a radical concept of cemetery design at that time, it later became accepted almost universally as the model plan. Spring Grove remains a masterwork of the landscaping art, studied by horticulturists and admired by thousands of visitors. The Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce lists it among the city's outstanding attractions proudly quoting the praise of an artist who once said, "Only a place with a heart and soul could make for its dead a more magnificent park than any which exists for the living."
Spring Grove continues to provide its services within the reach of persons of every income. Offering every type of burial option, several styles of memorialization, an operating crematory, and the new Spring Grove Funeral Homes, Spring Grove is proud to serve Cincinnati residents with care, consideration, and convenience."

I used to live right across the street from an outer wall of this cemetery and have visited it 100s of times since I was a child and still haven't experienced all it has to offer. It is truly spectacular! I've visited cemeteries in America and abroad and none of them even come close to its beauty.

Kari....so glad you returned to Cincinnati & highlighted Spring Grove! Sometimes I will drive through & find a new place I haven't been to & sit & have lunch. The history and beauty here is amazing!!! Next time, be sure to check out the newer section in the wooded area for cremains. It almost has me considering cremation as an option. Be sure to come back when the flowers are in bloom in May - you will love it!

A former student from 35 years ago was buried there a few days ago. I had heard about it’s uniqueness, but sadly never took the time to visit. Despite the somber and sad day I could see the dormant beauty attempting to emerge; the forsythia, the magnolias... hope!

As I've become older(69) my interest in the whole funeral industry and cemeteries, has become so strong. I really like going to cemeteries and walking around. My favorite headstones, are the ones with a design and some have a lot of written information on them. Some newer cemeteries and older ones with new sections, have gone to flat markers. I really like the older ones. Really old cemeteries, can date back to the 1800's and earlier. The cemeteries you have shown us, are a piece of interesting history. Here, in the Greater Kansas City area, we have a number of very large older cemeteries. Their layouts are just beautiful. They are the place to go to, in the fall. With all the trees, the places are unbelievable! Thank you, for your tour today, and for each interesting video, you do!

In 1980 a few months before we were married,my wife Lisa was visiting with her mother on Hamilton Ave.up the hill from Northside.I wanted to visit them so I caught the bus from Wyoming,Ohio just a few miles from Northside. It was a very hot August day.As the bus traveled south on Spring Grove Ave.,I decided that rather than disembark at Northside and then transfer back up Hamilton Ave.,that it would be quicker and more fun to exit the bus at Spring Grove CEMETERY and walk due west for what surely couldn't be more than a mile, till I came out on Hamilton Ave. Although the CEMETERY is indeed beautiful, picturesque and serene,it was a bad idea. For starters I had never been more than a few hundred yards into this CEMETERY,and I really had no idea of the immensity of it.Also I assumed that the whole place was relatively level and well manicured and landscaped.Little did I know.....It was indeed impeccably maintained for the first 100 hundred or so acres, but the further into it's interior I ventured, the Wilder and more natural the terrain became and the elevation more uneven till there appeared hills and even after a while small areas of pasturage and small groups of cows. The going got rough and slower and I realized how badly I misjudged the level of difficulty I would encounter traversing this park.Although it was mid afternoon and a sunny day I realized also that I was more than a little disoriented as well as very dismayed with myself and my my foolish, ill planned decision to do this hike...short cut indeed !!! The knowledge that had I just ridden the bus on to Northside, gotten off, waited for the ten to twenty minutes till the northbound bus going up Hamilton Avenue arrived and availed myself of it,I would have been there long before now.As I pushed on in what I hoped was a more or less westward trajectory I at last heard what must surely be the distant swoosh of traffic on Hamilton Ave.coming from beyond The summit of the wooded hill that I was with difficulty, asending. It was from the crest of the hill ,I finally looked down at Hamilton Avenue a good 70'below me at the bottom of a steep incline. And I had come out of the unexpected wilderness at least a quarter mile up and further north than I had hoped to be.By then I was desperately exhausted and thoroughly soaked with sweat..My only consolation was that it was almost over and the last stretch was all down hill.By the time I arrived,I was very unwell and entering into the preliminary stages of heat stroke.Hyperventilating and numb lips etc...But for all that it is indeed a beautiful CEMETERY.I recommend you take your car.

I used to be spooked of cemeteries until I spent 11 years working in them. That peaceful feeling especially in the evening when I used to go up and set an extra run of the water hand lines. Took me about an hour and except for the mosquitoes LOL it was amazing. So quiet and pretty. It is crazy but it felt like I cud feel the people buried there thanking me for taking the best care of their last homes as I could. OK Back to reality. Sorry for the drift.

This is a large place. Here is how to not get lost.
There are three paths from the front gate to the rear gate. They are the yellow, white and green.
The centerline of the road is painted this color. Generally, downhill is the front gate.
Mind the speed limit as some bends are wicked sharp.
The white and green paths traverse the northern part of the property.
The yellow path is long and traverses the south and west of the property.
All paths start at the road junction after the underpass.
When I am in the area I will often drive from gate to gate because it is so refreshing.
    Peace

Buffalo N.Y. has several large old cemeteries. Every spring we would plant flowers on the relatives graves and return every week or so to water them.( I used to love peeking into the mosoleums.) As bizarre as this sounds I have dreams of visiting the graves performing that gardening task. What was that term you used for people who visit cemeteries? I've done that in a small old one in New Orleans, I'd love to see the large one in the city I saw from the highway it looked amazing.
