  • Discover How Mr Puell Uses Elkonin Boxes to Blend | Phonics (Upper grades)
    **********************
I made this video for a friend who has a 3rd grade student diagnosed with Down Syndrome and is struggling with decoding. However, this 8 minute activity can also work for students in ETK - 1st grade.
(Parents/Teachers): Feel free to pause between words to allow students to process the information as well as reteach the skills when needed. Students can follow along (using an Elkonin box worksheet provided below) and coins or other manipulatives.
    What Are Elkonin Boxes?
Elkonin boxes build phonological awareness skills by segmenting words into individual sounds, or phonemes. To use Elkonin boxes, a child listens to a word and moves a token into a box for each sound or phoneme. In some cases different colored tokens may be used for consonants and vowels or just for each phoneme in the word. This technique is also used for students with dyslexia and other types of disabilities.
You are not required to use coins. Alternative can be (toy cars, blocks, pom poms, etc.) Feel free to download the Elkonin Boxes pdf below from Understood.org (non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources for families of children with ADHD, dyslexia, and other types of disabilities).

    UPDATE:******
So, I did it! I finally ventured into the world of children literature (sort of). Below are the links to a few children’s books that I wrote and would love your input on. Because they are self-published though KDP on Amazon, I have no control over the pricing (standard $8.99 per book). However, I do plan on writing several more, which I’m hoping would help drop the price (as well as the occasional seasonal/holiday price drops that occur throughout the year).
Thanks for the support and enjoy!
