  • One of our focus group participants really prefers that the president be a man. And most of the Republican voters we talked to have only one man in mind: Donald Trump. The Bulwark's own Tim Miller joins Sarah for part two of our season premiere to break down the sorry state of the non-Trump candidates in the Republican presidential primary.

It seems there is a consistent theme in all focus groups is that the people are never asked to give specifics to back up their sweeping comments. They just parrot the messages that Trump told them over and over.

I think the standard ethics of focus groups has said it's not ok to do that which... Idk how I feel about that, especially if you consider that these people likely don't willingly engage with anyone or anything that could pierce their information bubbles but they will engage with this. Fascism doesn't give AF about ethics and norms and the resistance sticking to them cedes ground

It’s not surprising that people still think President is a man’s job, but it’s asinine. I have heard so many people say they just could not bring themselves to vote for Hillary Clinton but didn’t know why. I know why. Too many Americans, even women, won’t vote for a woman. That is insanity. Good thing the men have done such an outstanding job that every citizen is happy with our government, right?

"I prefer a male candidate". At least these people are consistent, since I heard the same thing about Hillary in 2016 from conservative women. The argument is obviously stupid, though. Margaret Thatcher was certainly more aggressive than all her successors and everyone took her very seriously, including the USSR. Angela Merkl was also a steadfast leader, widely held up as an example during Trump's shameful presidency. Edit: I wrote about Thatcher 1 minute before Tim mentioned her. 😄

    • @dfuher968

Yeah, Merkel was the first in my mind, being from a neighboring country. She was and is deeply respected, and every male (and female) leader in Europe held her in high regard. Even the adversaries, like Putin, knew, she was a formidable opponent. Im quite sure, that if she hadnt decided to retire, she would still be Chancellor.

@@SpearcaBut we already do. The media focus on people whose opinions haven't changed on any major topic in fifty years is harmful but also LAZY. How many election cycles since you became politically aware have you seen the "Heartland American Opinion" video package where some journalist or host of some kind goes to bum fuck nowhere to speak some provincial know nothings to ask their views which tells us zip cuz the answers they give have been the same:
      "I dislike taxes."
      "Change makes me uncomfortable."
"Why are we spending money on THAT when we should be spending money here on Americans?!"
"I think we need to cut government spending on welfare."
"Government needs to stop doing everything big business wants."
"No, I think businesses are too taxed."
It's the same bullshit for decades. The opinions of simpletons, zealots or the politically incoherent when they're not just willfully ignorant.
How about this as a simple litmus test... Black Women gave Biden his win. In fact Black Women have put the Democratic Party over the top rather consistently... When was the last time you saw a slick, sympathetic media package from anyone, old media or online, that was about getting the opinions of Black Women on the election?
You know the answer is a fuck ton less than the umpteenth interview with Jethro at the diner or the average Karen filled focus group.

Okay, so if we assume that Trump dies or something so can't overturn the constitution to stay in power, are Republican voters really going to mellow out in 2028 and vote for Tim Scott? Trump is the leader of the republican party, but even he doesn't openly support republican positions around Unions and Abortions and such. I think it's far more likely that Ron DeSantis or Vivek will be the front runners of the hypothetical 2028, and Tim Scott will still be in the back half of the running.

Whether you like their politics or not women have proven on the world stage that they can be awesome leaders: Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Magdalena Andersson (Sweden), Golda Meir. Again, whether you support their politics they all show that women can lead. And then, there's the track record of the men so far. I'm ready now.

People need to acknowledge the reality of international reluctance toward electing women to high office. Deny it at your own peril. It is a reality of the way many feel. Ask yourself how many people have mummy issues. It’s a lot.

Someone needs to start addressing what a Trump win would look like once he's back in the Oval office. It will look NOTHING like his first term!!!! The movie "V for Vendetta" comes to mind.
