Whenever I feel like I'm wasting m supplies I try to say to myself that the only way to waste art supplies is to not use them to make art
For example, making 'bad' art with ink is not a waste, being to scared to use the ink so it dries up is

Alice C-E yes! This is how I’m trying to think now too! I actually “saved” some of my alcohol markers for when I was going to mKe an “epic piece.” Long story short, I recently went back to those markers after a year and they are dried up :( the time to make art is now😆

    • @arielceleda4897

Im struggling a little with that. And you both got a point here. If the Markers as Fay says, or the ink get dryed up your are losing your opportunity. And if is not something that is wasting away, we can talk about how fast life is... Today you are here, tomorrow (hope i will be :D) you dont know... So make art now, is the only way to not waste your supplies and yourself.

@@maddybrooker6997 If you don't use your diamonds, they might as well be poop, friend.
Try to get using one of your new things at the time. If you have a big pile of all new, expensive supplies, its so easy to get overwhelmed and intimidated, but remember that you can actually chip away at that pile - just because you bought it all at once, you don't have to start using it all at once!
I take off the first sheet of paper on an expensive block and cut it into about postcard sized sizes, and they make it easier for me to swatch and try small things and get to know that paper and maybe a new paint without investing many hours in a new, finished piece!
I hope you're already going, though!
      You can do it!

Watching this and realizing this is exactly how I’ve been feeling about my art lately, especially b/c I’ve been trying to build a following on Instagram and share my art more actively. As I’ve noticed that, I’ve been actively trying to stray away from using my phone a lot in general, except for looking for inspiration and kind of moving away from less intentional things, as I saw myself starting to compare too much.
Lately I’ve also been trying to find ways to get out of my house, to avoid falling into the trap of being on my phone all day, and I can say it’s definitely been making me feel a bit better even if it still has a rough couple months for me. Going forward I really will try to venture more with supplies to use out of them to the fullest extent I can.

O.k. Here’s the thing- art is subjective. Not one artist (of any type) will ever have 100% approval. It stings when a “hater” gets in the comments but let it go. If you create, you are an artist. If you enjoy your art you are a good artist. Do not carry those “haters” comments around in your “life luggage”. We are so hard on ourselves as it is. I give you so much credit for putting yourself out there to begin with. And you know that all those “perfect “ posts we see everywhere were not perfect from the start. The choice is yours! Carry on! !!!

Some concept that worked for me: everytime you start drawing it happens for the first time. Every new piece of art is the first one. So it would be hard to blame yourself for "bad art". Otherwise when you expect that your experience is rich enough to create "good art" and then you fail, your confidence could be ruined.

I'm so glad I saved this video to watch later.
I just want to say that I really, really adore you. You are like me but just older and more experienced. It sounds odd but when I watch your videos I feel like I come to old friend, or aunt when I'm down. After every video I feel more motivated and like someone patted my head. It's warm. And I remember what brought me to your channel. There was one video that I don't remember at all but i remembered your calm voice and this warm feeling from your channel and just you.
Right now, I am again in my art block time when I want to make art but I can't feel it. And just like you, my mental state really impact on my creativity. And it sucks. I started curing my depression and I feel like when I take medication it also takes the feelings that inspired me to make something.. It's wrong..
I mostly feel irritated by not being able to focus just for 5 minutes to make some art. But it hurts when a peace lacks emotion. So I start to avoid being disappointed with myself. It's weird because it happens every year before summer.
Anyway.. I glad that you make that kind of videos. These word means a lot to me. I'll try to not be so hard on myself. Thank you so much for being here, being yourself and being in this art community.
Edit: I and really love how the painting turned out in the end! Sometimes it happens to me too and it feels so good to make things up.

That's a really good way to look at negative comments. It's a person who's already mad about life just yelling a random mean thing at you because you just happened to be the one standing there, and then they leave and probably go yell another random mean thing at somebody else they don't know. It really has nothing to do with you at all, and it is not a reflection of your talent or your skill level, it's just them needing to be mean to somebody to get negative energy out. Don't take it personally, because it isn't personal, because that person does not know you. ❤️

This is such an important message. Art making needs to be a private experience that we choose to share with others, ESPECIALLY when we are just starting out. I have been painting for over 40 years, I have an art degree and I teach watercolor, and I still make paintings that I don't like, but I learn from them. I'v you aren't allowed to make "bad" art, then you will never be able to make "good" art. You need to be present with the whole experience to grow. That is already very difficult to do in private.

I just use Instagram as a way to sorta chronicle my art journey. I do sometimes promote my art channel there but I tend not to even look at the numbers on Instagram at all. Its a convenient place to post my work cuz it auto posts to my Facebook page and Twitter. If people like it, that's really great and feels good, but you're right, sometimes the social aspect can really stunt the artistic expression. Sometimes I just doodle and paint and don't even think about if I'll post it or not. It is truly freeing especially because I feel like i do improve much more that way.

When you said, "it would be silly to worry about writing in a diary because it's personal, noone else needs to see it" (or along those lines)... it really hit home. That's my problem, that's always been my problem. I've got issues on a fundamental level of feeling unacceptable, of needing validation, of not feeling like anything I do is good enough. That includes my diary, that includes my innermost thoughts, and that bleeds outwards.
I don't know how I'm going to process that in terms of using all those things as an opportunity to learn, and to become more at home with myself... but I think it's important for me to have recognised that.
Arleesha, when you said you were 28 (my age!) I was shocked, because you are always coming across as incredibly grounded and wise. Your videos always, always bring me a perspective I never expected. Thank you for your incredibly thoughtful commentaries.

I love what you said about separating the creating of art from the sharing of art.. I’ve fallen into that trap sooo many times and you’re right, making ‘bad Art’ is how we learn and grow .. so you’re video was a great reminder to me and something I will continue to work on! 💜

I am only a few weeks into finding myself in art with painting. Watching your videos has been so extremely helpful just in the thought process of getting up to keep going with it. Thank you so very much for the platform of honesty and vulnerability that you share because it helps me with the honesty and vulnerability I need to allow myself to be open about

This subject is just what I needed . Painting practice is an intimate relationship between me , my mind and my watercolor paper . I’ve got to stop posting on IG or Sketchy seeking validation of every piece I make. I need to paint just for ME!! Thank You!!!!

This inspired me so much. I also work in a library as you have and I'm finishing colledge right know (graduating in History). I found myself in your story when you said you've always drawn but never in a professional and constant way until now. And now, knowing who I am a little more, I want to grow as an artist because that's what I truly love. But I've been struggling with finding a cohesive art style so I could post more efficiently and gain more follows on Instagram, and, to be honest, I was really sad and demotivated with what I was producing. I'm always asking myself "is this good enough for a post?" and I agree with you when you say this is a very unhealthy way to approach your art. I've since stepped back, took a deep breath, and I've been drawing/painting only with the purpose of experimenting, failing and learning. And, damn, that changed the world for me. Every day is a new chance to make a new thing or discovery. And your videos, your honest talks, your sincerity has been so inspiring and has helped me so much, I just wanted to share it you. You make amazing and unique art. Love from Brazil ✨

I love your videos partly because I enjoy seeing your art and partly because I like listening to you talk. There are few artists that can be so open and honest here on RUclips, which is understandable. Thank you for making this video!

I did not realize you were so young! You speak and act in such a mature way. Amazing that you have been painting just 3 years as well. You have great confidence and presence and I hope to someday gain that and I am much older than you. Your art is also interesting, creative, and often beautiful. I don't see your post on Instagram much even though I follow you (but I follow so many artists) I will seek out your post, especially knowing that they may possibly not be there much longer! Thank you for your emotional and intellectual honesty and for sharing yourself and your journey with us. You are a great inspiration to me, and many apparently!

I'm a BIG believer that you have to accept that you WILL make bad art, and that's part of the process. But it took me a long time to get there, because I used to be obsessive and perfectionist-y when it came to my work. Now? I make the art for the experience, and even if it's not "perfect" or sometimes even finished, as long as I enjoyed it (mostly), and as long as I've learned something from it? Well, then it's good art even if it's "bad."
Your experiments and approach to them are perfect and I love that you're listening to yourself and letting things happen when they should.
I've also been sort of letting go of social media, not because I got stressed out about numbers or anything... Just because it takes me too many spoons to make posts and maintain and like.... Why? Why do I do that to myself? I shouldn't spend all my spoons on something that doesn't really do anything except bring me stress. Ain't nobody got time for that!

  • @PsychGal1980

I love how your style involves “plops” of colour. You’re able to drop the paint down in what seems to be splotches that all grow together and harmonize to create a whole that is at the same time “readable” but also very beautiful. As its happening i cant help but think... “why is she placing those weird blops of clashing colours together?!”... and then as you add more and move around the painting a cohesion occurs that creates peace between all of the seemingly disparate parts. Thanks so much for sharing your process (both here and on Skillshare), its truly inspiring.

This video is very important for me as an artist with social media. Social media can be very toxic and harmful, the culture of numbers, likes and follows is what makes us anxious most of the times.
Take my most sincere thanks, please.
Also to me wasting art supplies is buying them to not use them. That's a real waste.
Thanks for answering my question, too! 🙌 I don't like leafy greens at all either.

I really appreciate this video. I've wanted to start drawing for a long time and eventually start painting. I know you've said you've basically got to give yourself room to fail because you have to start somewhere, but I've been feeling so very discouraged about it. lately, I've been avoiding picking things up to practice, and I've lost a lot of the inspiration I originally had - just feeling really overwhelmed and much too hard on myself. I've watched this video several times and find it really reassuring to feel that I'm not alone in this kind of sentiment. I just wanted to say thanks for your videos, and this one in particular.

Not only that but a lot of times my athletes go through another type of block where they get stressed or cant find the motivation. There is a lot of good tips in here that i will not only try to keep in mind for myself but to pass on and teach to my athletes. So thank you for sharing that.

I'm so glad I found your channel. I really enjoyed this video and listening to all the things you had to say. I do art as a hobby and sometimes I feel bad (like there's something wrong with me) when I don't feel like drawing or being creative. I'm actually in one of those slumps right now, and I have to constantly remind myself that if I don't feel like drawing today then that's ok; I have lots of other things to do (like reading, book binding, playing video games, playing with my furr babies, creating something cool out of my son's Lego for him to see when he gets home from school, ect....). I created an insta account for the purpose of posting my art, just to get out of my comfort zone, so when I don't post (or even open the app up) I need to remind myself that I did all that for me and me alone. So if I don't do anything with my account for days, weeks or even a few months; then that's ok.
Ok, rant all over, just wanted to finish up by saying thank you, the messages in this video were just what I needed to start my day off; even if I am months late offer this was posted: hello 2020

This was such a good Q&A ! I struggled with both the "I don't want to make bad art" and the "I don't want to waste my supplies" mindset, but luckily I have been able to slowly get out of it. I don't care so much about bad art anymore, and I don't try to get stuff to be perfect. I'm still bummed out if something doesn't work out or doesn't come out the way I wanted it too, but overall I don't worry about drawing something that's good. I share my art on instagram, but I've been one of the lucky ones who did not feel pressured by that. I never sit down to draw or paint with the intention to create something that I can post to social media. I only ever look at that after I am done, and even if it is bad I sometimes still share it. I think that's because I share my stuff to show how I've progressed and how much I have improved compared to when I first started posting art to instagram. So yeah, it really is all about how you approach things!
Also, I just noticed you are almost at 100k subscribers! Eeeek! I remember you hitting 50k as if it was only yesterday! YOU GO GIRL

Whenever i feel i´m wasting my supplies or making bad art in any way, ink, watercolor, digital ... i just keep drawing because i say to myself that i´m not drawing for anyone just for myself, art it´s my own personal way to explore my soul and emotions and it´s ok if i´m not good at all that it´s not the point... for me i just draw because i like art i like the feeling of just do it.
