Corvette Start Issue Solved: Loose Relay Connection

  • UPDATE: This ended up being a loose socket for the crank relay... I was having another starting issue just before this one. And while troubleshooting for that issue, I used a multimeter probe in that crank relay socket.
    Doing that spread open the leads, and caused this problem.

    It Took basically two years for me to solve this coupled with the 2005 "service steering column lock" problem. I solved the latter problem with the cheap ebay dummy load plug in. But about one year after installing that the error codes returned and the no start issue became more and more frequent to the point the car was too unreliable to drive. Got pissed and finally figured it out. Open your fuse box under the hood. Pull relay #43 out. Mine is the original AC Delco unit. It has 4 short posts that plug into the fuse box. Pry the grey cover off of the relay. Then carefully with the car in neutral and E brake on plug it back into the fuse box without squeezing the relay contact shut. Go ahead and push the relay contact shut manually and your starter will turn the engine over. The starter will engage and try to start your car. In order for the engine to fire the rocker start switch on the dash has to be glowing green on top. Solder a wire to each side of the relay and attach a simple push switch. This by-pass will turn the starter over regardless of whether the ignition is on, regardless of the clutch being depressed or not or whether it is in reverse, 1st, 2nd etc.... Be careful but if you do it the no start issue will be resolved once and for all. Btw, I still get "service column lock errors" on the display... I ignore it. I can now drive without worrying about turning the car off without starting back up. PROBLEM SOLVED.

      thats just a pin fitment issue on the underside of the fuse block. its got nothing to do with the relay its the female side of the terminals having poor contact to the pins on the ignition signal wire or a issue before that part of the starting circuit. your a moron for suggesting someone does this you realize someone can get killed doing this correct? thats why there are clutch switches and neutral safety switches. and fuses lmao if your gonna instruct someone to do this at least mention how to make it safe you just suggested someone makes there car able to move at any given moment if that buttons pushed while cars in gear. good advice for a friend in need of a quick fix but not for the general public

    Guys it could be one of these few things. Relay, fuel pump, battery or alternator, and if that’s not it, could be the sensors or the starter. But personally, my problem was my Linkage on my shift cable. If this is happening to you, try to start the car is a different gear, if you’re in an automatic, start it in Neutral for example. It worked for me. Hope this helps!!

      I’m having the same issues on my 2006 manual. You say that it could be the linkage on the shift cable, I thought they only had that in automatics? I’ve been going down the list myself to solve this issue for mines. Where is that shift linkage cable located?

    Where is the crank relay located? You just tightened it?

    • @CliffsHowTo
      @CliffsHowTo  3 года назад +5

      The crank relay is inside the under hood fuse box. It removed the fuse box, disassembled it, and bent the metal prongs which hold the relay in place, so that they would hold the relay better.
      I only had to do this, as I had bent them outward, like an idiot, when I stuck my multimeter leads in the relay socket, while troubleshooting an different issue.
      I was having a different starting issue before this one. It was either the starter or the clutch position sensor. I’m not sure which, as I changed them both.

      It is fixed. I am not sure what the original issue was. It was either the starter, or the clutch pedal sensor.
      After changing both of those, I was still having the no start issue, but only after the car warmed up. The relay socket was expanding with heat, and allowing for enough space for there electrical connection to not work.
      Once I tightened up the relay socket, I’ve not had an issue with the starting.
      I really wish I knew what the original issue was!

Already replaced the crankshaft sensor and it was a pain to get to. Hoping I can go thru my relay box and check all my connections. • @lavarstarzz7811
      @lavarstarzz7811 4 года назад +1

      Yes.. on my 2005 C6.. Its a relay that tells the computer to retract column lock pin to unlock the steering wheel to start the car. You can hear it when you push start the car at start up. There is no recall on the issue so the dealer has to fix it cost around $600-700 with labor. Once you get it functioning properly you will need to purchase a column lock bypass module (Corvette of Houston) or couple other places and sites sell them $75-100 that installs behind the dash tachometer display. It bypass the security feature to extend the pin to lock steering column and tells the car not to lock the steering wheel. You should be good to go.

      Yeah, for me, it was the relay pins. I used a multimeter and hat was too big in the slot. It spread the pins just enough so that when the relay pins would heat up, they would not have a good connection.
