I currently own one of these and I have never seen one without a pistol grip. Incidentally the buckhorn shaped bracket the firing pin locks into has a safety notch in the top of it, so the gun can be carried loaded, but on safe. From the safety notch you just pull back and push down and the gun is now ready to fire.

Just FYI - They were made from 1919 until 1939 when they were shut down for war production. The action is a "Warnant" action that is similar to a Flobert Warnant, but not quite the same.
The one you have there is the standard model. You can tell by the "bent up" rear sight and the wood-stamped "Dormant Lion" logo on the left side of the stock. There are other models with variants.
The "Deluxe" model has a checkered grip on the stock and a different rear sight. They also have a wooden, raised medallion for the logo and the logo on the butt plate.
As far as being a "Hitler Youth" rifle, I've heard that many times, but I've never seen any evidence for it, and I've looked. However, it's likely that the Hitler Youth used a variety of firearms, so it is very possible that some units did use the DW1. I just haven't been able to find any reliable sources for it.
They are highly collectible and fetch very high prices when you consider the actual functionality. For the same price (and usually for much less), you can easily get a Cooey/Winchester/Savage Model 64.
What I'd LOVE to see is Ian at Forgotten Weapons @ForgottenWeapons do an episode on the DW1.
One thing that I should mention about the DW1 is that when you load it, you MUST be careful when returning the bolt back to the firing (or safety) position as it can go off. So, make certain that your rifle is pointing in a safe direction when loading/cocking.
And yes, I love these little guns! They're very enjoyable and fun! The Warnant action is just rather novel/different and really makes it something special compared to other single shot .22 rifles.

You seem to have done some research on these rifles, but have you seen these before with a no pistol grip stock ?? I currently own one and wonder what type of wood the stocks were made of ?

Just one more bit of advice. You used the Sandpaper and cut through and removed any remaining bluing so when you put that action plate back in any remaining oil will absorb into the stock leaving bare metal to rust even faster than before. I would suggest at least a cold blue coat or 2 on those parts you won’t see and won’t be wiping down and oiling regularly.

I didn’t hear you mention but hopefully you had oil on that steel wool. If you didn’t, you should always use some (motor oil works great) a little bit of oil in the wool. It keeps the wool from scratching the finish and helps it only catch on the rust to pull it off. Dry steel wool even at 4 is abrasive enough to mess up a good gun finish.

Oh that's good advice. I actually didn't have any oil on that so next time I will use some car oil

That is a great idea. I belive it was made more for youth and that is why it's short. I might add on some extra wood to make It longer.
