      Ls Droid, PCM Hammer, tuner pro. Not the best software out there, but it’s free. That’s for the LS stuff. HP Tuners is is more versatile and is $100 per VIN. If your running duplicate ecu’s on different cars you can flash the same vin to save a hundo.

    Before turbocharging my own setup., the most common thing I heard was You'll shoot your eye out......
    Glad I didnt listen and built a GT45 based setup for my 318 Dodge Dart Sport......
    I sure learned ALOT along the way.....

    Great turbo i bought one around 12 years ago, it was the gt45 with the 98mm compressor wheel and 1.15a/r rear housing, Still going strong 12 years later.

      @@richardholdener1727 Idk if you ever done this,,, but what about a nice 350 SBC manifold dyno test🤔 I know it's about what 3-4 pairs of SBC exhaust manifolds right I think this would be worth watch as well for us normal SBC guys, that's if you haven't done it yet

    Matt Happel (Sloppy Mechanics) replied to a comment I made about this turbo. He said that the GT45 wins the economics race but that it's not the best option for any particular setup.
    I have one on my 5.3. Makes around 700 at the crank. It spins up lazy in comparison to a On3 76mm but is less of a restriction on the hotside on the top end. It makes power, absolutely. Just not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

    Thank you for using the right number for % increase: far too many people will say that an engine that's triple the size is 300% bigger (when in reality it's 300% as big, 200% bigger)

    I would like to see a graph with each engine running the "same" boost level to show how the power curve changes with the same turbo but different engine. Maybe put a 600 hp run of each engine to show how boost comes on sooner the larger the engine it's attached to.

      Look at the hp level in which the turbo really starts to spool. That should tell you what you need to know. A certain exhaust energy facing a certain lack of resistance on the intake side leads to more output.
      AT 350hp, if the heads are high-flow heads, with eight cylinders, you will see less resistance to flow than, for example, on a four-cylinder Iron Duke.

    Hi Richard, I love this comparison. I'm thinking about doing a remote turbo on my relatively mild 350 chevy. I'd love to see a setup like that tested with the turbo placed 8-10 feet from the intake. If that's something you could do that would be awesome. Keep up the great work!

    I've never heard somebody knock an ebay turbo without mentioning "quality consistency". It's cool to see this video, but I'd be interested in failure rates in a given time period with multiple samples in comparison to the not-clone. Great vid!

      I’ve gotten an eBay turbo that failed in 150 miles. Then another one next week that failed the same day. Then got a new borg Warner that’s going on now still.

    For the money, it can’t be beat. I just bought a billet 78/75, and of course it’s better than a gt45 but you can’t argue those cheapo 45s are pretty epic

    There is no such thing as the best turbo, there is only the best choice of a turbo. Everything is very relative and sums up to what is the intended purpose of the built and what kind of a powerband one wishes to have from his setup. What is best for one is not good enough for another. Good comparison and video. Thanks for sharing.

    You have to know I liked this video a lot!!
    My thoughts on the GT-45 clone(s) is that they have very fortunate compressor wheel and turbine housing sizes. The math just happens to work out ok for wide a range of engine sizes.
    This is truly what makes it so ‘universal’.
    It’s definitely not ideal for many combos but due to its sizing it works fairly well regardless.

    Works real good on a 12 liter diesel, but that's what a million of them came with, right from the factory.

      It's not a Honeywell or Garrett Gt45. I know a bunch of diesels had gt4594 or a gt4502. The ones I've seen on EBay have a 69mm inducer and a 98mm exducer putting them right in between them for size. This is a really big turbo for most guys with a stock v8. Once you pass 800hp, the rest of the driveline comes in to question.

      @@timothybayliss6680 I have been technician for 30 years bud, from auto and light truck, all the way through class 8 semi tractors, marine engines, and powered industrial equipment. The reason that clone GT45 is so cheap, is because it is an extremely popular turbo on over-the-road diesel applications in the 10-12 liter engine size category. And GT45 is a Garrett "frame size", there are many turbochargers that fall into this category. Do some research on GT38 turbochargers, there is at least a dozen configurations of that turbo frame size.

    I would say it’s the best bang for the buck. If dollars are a premium, I doubt that there is any better out there. It costs about $190.00 now.

      I used a olds 350 trans to fit in my buick. I had 2 Cadillac 400 rebuilt but they both blew. Had the trans shop build a 350 olds . Told them I was putting it behind a 455 with nos. So it has to be built right. But I'm sure a good 400 teans will be fine. Maybe the people who built them for me didn't really know what they were doing

      @@reedhryals7007 that’s interesting. I’ve heard the 350s can be built to take a mean beating. I won’t be hitting mine with nos so I might just do a lil shift kit action with a stock rebuild hahaha. I got a really good transmission shop near by me I’ll probably have them take a peek at it since I’ve got it out see what they recommend. I’ve had good luck with my 400s so far. Got one in an impala with a 327 and one in an olds 98 behind a 455 but no serious power in either of them just mild motors.

    I wouldn't go with the "best" turbo to the "most adequate" turbo pretty much as you summarize in the end. :)
    Turbos don't seem to be super picky as long as you stay (mostly) within the realm of sanity.
    I wish I had a K24 like that to stuff into something. Even NA that would be pretty darn stout in a Civic or CRX. I would love to do something like a Lancia Stratos Kit car and stuff that in the back, boosted or not.
    That little 5.3L is STOUT. Punching around a few numbers assuming every 14.7 PSI doubles HP you get:
    PR 1.36 (5.3 PSI)=680hp (~75hp down)
    PR 1.44 (6.4 PSI)=717hp (~50hp down)
    PR 1.49 (7.2 PSI)=745hp (~55hp down)
    pr 1.55 (8.1 PSI)=776hp (~60hp down)
    PR 1.64 (9.4 PSI)=820hp (~70hp down)
    PR 1.72 (10.6 PSI)=861hp (~68hp down)
    What's interesting is that you can see the lower boost is down on more power than the mid range which lost less power than the top end. The bottom of a lot of compressor maps tends to be very narrow (the BW S-series seem to be an exception here) so I don't know that I'm totally surprised about that.
    In terms of the 383, you'd be down some pretty serious power over the Vic Jr at the top end with a stock truck intake I'd think. If you took the dyno #s from the Vic Jr and used them anyways you'd be at 160HP down from theoretical but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in actuality a lot less since the truck intakes aren't super spectacular especially on a pretty wild 383.

    0:16 i just say if you get ebay turbo you always want it to have full 360° thrust bearing to last.. but yes it may be best one, as you can get lighter SS turbine housings
    on the other hand, i love used Holset turbos, you can rebuild them easily, and in last year or two i switched to VGT turbos from holset as they were even cheaper.. viariable A/R from 0.3 to something like 3.0+, so you dont even need a external wastegate, small sized one (hy40v) 57mm comp in start spooling at 2000rpm on 1.8 8v engine, 66mm (66comp in, 102mm compressor out) one i didnt tested on yet, but will go with my supra engine to hopefully get 1000hp

    I would really like to see a test using a 99.5-03 Powerstroke turbo, the 2nd gen .84 wastegated turbo. The specs look rather promising on these and I would be very interested in seeing a test with one.

      They are really good but the turbine housing has an odd size v band connection. The previous generation with a t4 flange is easier to swap to stuff even if it spins backward. There is also a couple different gtp38 turbine housings factory available.

    This video sparked some inspiration. What about stock turbo motors and back pressure video. Aka most all cars have small super responsive turbos which def goes hand in hand with back pressure. Maybe measuring how restrictive factory turbos are ?

    You ever had to have them balanced? I swore off them after I had a wheel contact the housing. Cost me the motor after pieces went through the motor. Performed great for the fifty miles it was fitted though 😂
    It's hard sacrificing a multiple thousand dollar motor to save $700 compared to a Borg Warner.

      I didn't-we just pulled them from the box-added oil before starting (important) then ran them

      Yeah I syringed it with oil and cranked the motor with no spark or oil return til it ran out of the turbo.
      Was a Nissan motor and a fresh install and I know the turbos the last to see oil on them.

      going from 2.4l to 4.8l is a 100% increase in displacement, going to 7.4L adds (near) another 100%-That's 200% (math is solid)

      How much power are you looking to squeeze out of it? If you're looking for a cheap turbo that will work you could some of the meaner versions of the Mitsubishi TD04 turbos. Those are good for about 300-350 HP depending on the version and used ones can be pretty cheap because they're OEM turbos for a bunch of different cars and lots of people sell them off when they upgrade to larger turbos. Most versions of the TD04 have a 6 or 7cm3 exhaust housing so they spool nice and fast on small engines.
      Another option would be a Holset HX30, this is a 44mm diesel turbo with a 6cm3 exhaust housing. They work real well on

    Richard, a GT45 would work well on engines between 3.0-4.5 litres....Too big for the K24 and too small for the V8s, especially the bigger ones.

      @@richardholdener1727 I am not saying that the test is not valid and that the results are not genuine, on the contrary, I believe that your test results are very reliable. I am just saying that in real life it's very unlikely someone would ever consider installing a GT45 in these engines. Even in the case of the 4.8 a GT47 should be a better choice. The K24 is very well matched with a T3/T4, possibly the most common automotive turbocharger of any kind that can be found in countless forms and chinese copies can be found very cheaply on e-bay.

    Good test is 2JZ GE with .030 gap rings. and full send on version VVTI the weaker version.

      Wouldn't a Gen I be a 331/354/392 style Hemi? A 426-572 would then be a Gen II and the Gen III is the 5.7L/blah/blah/blah?

    Best Turbo is all ways the one you can afford and fit under your bonnet. Even the crappiest little thing is still better than none. And you dont do anything with 10k turbo if you cant afford to do rest of the modifications to support it.
    But what comes to most of those gt45 clones.. is that most of the v8 guys run too small turbo and get huge exhaust pressures and temps on manifold , and most 4 banger guys run way too large one, so they get the thing spooled up just in time to shift again and drop out from usable boost... but its glorious for that blink of an eye.
    Btw. There are plenty of +1000wheel hp k24's around. Tho they have pistons, rings, rods, and valve springs upgraded.. But with just head studs and valve springs people bring those up to 700-800 hp with e85. But they mainly just drag race them , and let them cool off again. often use air to water intercoolers as well.

      You can do like the diesels and have a torque monster by using a puny turbo, but you would have to wastegate it to prevent overrevving and over-restricting the exhaust.

    @Richard Can you please restate that back pressure rule of thumb, something like "Two to one exhaust gage pressure to inlet gage pressure is a bad idea". Is that your preferred way of describing that phenomena and not just by simple pressure difference between inlet and exhaust?
    I was recently looking at a relatively large BW turbo on a Toyota 1.6L 4AGZE and the BW modelling suggested that the inlet pressure would exceed the exhaust pressure over most of the rev range which really impressed me. I was expecting the pressure difference to cross over and become negative long before max rpm, but the model predicted close to even inlet and exhaust pressure at max rpm.

      That 454 was pretty good but not overwhelming. 490ft lbs is in reach of a 6.0l with a few bolt ons, they cam make 510hp as well. If you had an upgraded 6.0 it would make sense to have two of these.

    Hey Richard and others. I am an old school N/A carb person. A couple years back I bought a bunch of stuff from one guy who was clearing out his garage, and included was a NIB twin turbo DNA kit that came with a large 2-into-1 intercooler, stainless pipes, BOV's, the works (I guess). I'd like to install this on something, but I'm itchy and scratchy about the learning curve. Where can I go that is easy on boost beginners to start putting something together? I don't need 15-year-olds calling me a Boomer that needs to jump in a hole and die. To that end, I avoid Facebook and would prefer a webside forum. Any good ideas?

      @@413x398 check out turbo forums and Richard's books. Try and figure out what your engine can handle, what the engine is built for (ring gap and other small setup), what you want it to do and look at forums for similar setups.
      But definitely recommend reading books.

    Richard, I have no idea if you check comments or even respond but you have helped me learn a ton over the last 10 months that I found your channel. I have what I think is a gen 4 454 out of an 83 c30. I’d like to freshen it up and give it an attitude but don’t have 3k for a full rebuild. So I want to do top end. I was looking at edelbrock performer serious but can’t quite determine the right heads for gen 4. Can gen 5 heads work?

    I guarantee week spark due to junk yard engine with milage running plugs way way past 100K with plug gap .100" larger. Its caused coils to weaken.
    Im sure coil driver in stock ecm was shot & needed coils, plugs, & ecm replaced in stock vehicle you removed it from. Probably one of reasons it was in junk yard.

    Question, can you/I run a 4 inch stroke crank on a 5.3 with a stock bore and how much would the displacement increase if it is possible? I've tried to look into it a little but I couldn't seem to find anyone that had done it, it seemed like everyone that was running the 4 inch stroke crank had also bored their engine.

      boring the engine give lil to size. like when you bore a 350 .030 its a 355 the stroke is what give it all the size. that 355 with a 3.48 stroke changed to a 3.75 goes to a 383. so without the bore 383-5=378

      you would do bore x bore x 8 x stroke x .7854 so 3.78 x 3.78 x 8 x 3.622 x .7854 = 359ci will give you a no bore size

      It would take you from 325 to 359 cubic inches with the 4 inch stroke crank Phil but if you bored it from 3.78 to 3.903 at the same time you'd have 383 cubes or find a 6.0 block and buy the stroker crank and you'd have a 402, alot of people bore and stroke because if you're going for power theres no point in running factory pistons with new rods and crank

      The 383 ls is what you get if you bore it to 5.7 piston size. It was 3.905" bore 4" stroke. If you are going to invest in a stroker crank, you almost always need pistons and rods and if you have a 5.3 block and you are buying pistons, why wouldn't you bore the block for a few more cubes?

    Hey Richard... shooting for about 400 h.p ,typically street driven chevy 250 c.i. inline 6.... what would be your preferred turbo size?.... gt35.... OR gt45 ??? 35 would spool faster for better typical street driving. But is it adequate?? I have a ebay gt45. Should I get a gt35??

    I also bought a China turbo from maxpeeding but I got the T3/T4 for my Toyota 3RZ build. Have not installed it yet as I’m still rebuilding the motor.

      I have put that turbo from maxpeeding (goddamn their spam emails.) on a toyota 2h diesel. I thought at first itd be too big, but ohnestly, spooled amasing. I dont think you will be disapointed. .. the engine I ditted it too didnt have a boost referenced fuel pump (WAS NA) so couldnt really go crazy with the boost, but it definitely outperformed the "TRD" T3 that was already on there. and it was obv genuine garrett.

      @@denisohbrien did you run an intercooler with it. I’m going low boost right now (5-8psi) as it’s stock. But thinking of building up a second one I have with a forged lower and the same turbo. I have seen 3RZ kits from LCE that pipe straight into the intake with no intercooler and say it’s not needed with low boost. My concern is that the intercooler does act as a type of filter if this turbo lets go.

      I had a 04 Tacoma I used a 58/62 from Precision.. cx racing intercooler.. and water/meth injection.. electric fan.. the Lil truck jammed.. the turbo was sized pretty well.. I could have probably went 62/62.. but I wasn't even close to tapping out my turbo.. I was only pushing 8psi

    What's your opinion on a vs7875 vs Borg or Summit s475 on bigger cubes between 410-454ci? Would the t6 be a better suite compared to the t4 of the 7875?

    I mentioned it in a comment on the live stream but I will repeat it. If you have the same airflow and boost you will have the same backpressure. If you look at the 4.8v 7.4 and you compare the 4.8 at peak power and the 454 at 4500 the horsepower is within the Margin and backpressure when the boost is the same is indistinguishable.

      @@richardholdener1727 I am looking again at that video and really don't think I am wrong. The 4.8 made peak power naturally aspirated at 6100 and its really close to 410hp. On one run it has about 8.8psi boost and 12.6psi back pressure at 6100 rpm. The 454 made really close to 410hp at 4500rpm naturally asperated. During the boosted run at 4500 it was making a little over 9 psi boost and 15.5psi back pressure and almost 50hp more than the 4.8 at 8.8psi and 6100 rpm. The 4.8 makes peak hp on the "8 psi" run of about 605hp at it looks like 6100, the 454 looks to be over 650hp at 4500 rpm and 9psi boost. They clearly do not have the same airflow, my contention is it a basis for comparison. My point is backpressure is a function of the demands on the compressor. Those numbers are really close, if you found an rpm they had equivalent air flow, meaning mass, with equivalent manifold pressure, meaning boost, they would have equivalent back pressure because the demand for work to compress the air charge from the turbine would be the same. Those engines have quite different airflow needs at that pressure and rpm given the margin of power output. Given how different those two engines are its kind of surprising how close all those numbers are.

    Hi Richard, when you bump the lbf of spring pressure up, typically what sort of step are you looking for to have a material effect for these types of test? On my application I can bump the springs 15% without machining, do you typically go more when you swap out? Thanks :-)
