  • In this video, I share a personal story of when I encountered white privilege as a Mexican American. Join me as I reflect on a particular moment that opened my eyes to the disparities in treatment and opportunities based on race. Through this narrative, I aim to provoke thought and discussion about systemic inequalities and the importance of acknowledging privilege in our society. Let's explore together how we can work towards a more equitable future for all.

    Thank you for sharing. I’m not white and with me not being white has made me realize it’s so unfair. How come when I do it, it’s more of a problem? How come some white people shoplift for the thrill but when I do it, people say “unusual suspects.” It makes me so raged and sometimes I hate that white privilege exists…

    Mexican Americans can be white too. Latino/a, Hispanic, Mexican, Spanish aren’t races after all. I’m Latino but 100% racially white.

    Something i don't get is, are "white" people only the ones we assume are white because they have blonde hair and blue or light colored eyes? I think education is so important for people who are discriminating against others because of visual cues: gray hair - old and won't stay at the job, female - generally less than and will be more focused on her family, Hispanic last name - speaks Spanish, dark hair - mexican. My husband is mexican I'm white, his skin is very white, his eyes are light, his hair when he was younger was every color people may assume he's white because the visual clues are contradicting what we "think" mexican is. So its important to educate about assuming-all races/all people assume based on visual clues or names - assume about one thing or another. I'm glad you havent continued to have challenges, I've never heard of apartments or jobs being so picky. Did they each advise if they were doing a criminal and financial backgtound check? I'd be curious about the laws in your state and whether a misdemeanor is a legally allowed reason for them to deny you. Since they did disclose that it was the misdemeanor that was the issue.

    Thank you so much for sharing this. I remember when you told me about this, but these details really put things into perspective. White privilege doesn't mean you had it easy, just means that the color of your skin doesn't make things harder.

    where’s the proof that all these places were rejecting you? A problem like this is multifaceted, and to boil it down to race and skin color is just arrogant. You and your friend seem like two different people so how do you know if it was specifically because of the color of her skin and something as trivial as her name?

      @thesandravshow  Месяц назад

      @@coldmango4792 like I asked in the video. Please let me know if you think there is another possible explanation, I’d love to hear them.

      @@thesandravshow like I said, its multifaceted. I don’t know the full story only what I’m hearing. Maybe your friend is more confident in her abilities and how she presents herself. Maybe the fact that she doesn’t see herself as a victim in these situations and moves with a positive energy helps her. Maybe the company that wanted to hired you found out they couldn’t and made up an excuse. But like I said, without showing proof, I can’t really say for sure, but like I said, there could be multiple factors involved. I’ve personally been rejected from jobs where the company was run by people with different skin tones than me. It doesn’t help me to think they didn’t wanna hire me because I wasn’t white or something, even if it’s true, which I have no proof of.

    • @thesandravshow
      @thesandravshow  Месяц назад +2

      @@coldmango4792 I never said I had proof. And getting proof would be nearly impossible. Had I applied and they didn’t call me for an interview, fine. But they did meaning they did think I was qualified. Had they interviewed me and not offered the job, fine. But they did interview me and felt I’d be a good fit. They specifically said they couldn’t bring me on because of that charge. That to me is strange. I even said if I didn’t have her experience to compare it to, I never would have thought it had anything to do with me being Mexican. I never would have just thought it was because they truly couldn’t hire someone with that charge but I know they could because they did. Like you said. There’s a lot you don’t know. But I was there, I lived it. I made this conclusion based on my lived experience. You are welcome to have your opinion based on this, that’s fine. But unless someone can suggest what else it might have been that would make sense, I feel like that was the cause. Trust me as some who doesn’t pull the race card or I guess “victim” card as you say, I have thought about this over and over for the last decade. Sometimes people already are victims you know. I get that we have become desensitized to it because some people exploit it for attention. I am not one of those people.

      @@thesandravshow im just saying having proof when telling your story is important. If your kid tells you someone took their lunch and stole their homework and there was no evidence would you believe them blindly? But I think my biggest issue is that your use of “white” privilege is false. Because you are saying that, even if a company is diverse and full of culture, that they would look at your application, see that you’re Mexican, and reject you? Also, it’s not like they suddenly realized AFTER they offer you the job and go, “ oh her last name is Vasquez? Nvm”? You’re even saying that a Mexican person would reject your application cause of your name? Come on. Am I to believe every place you applied for somehow works for the kkk and choosing to reject you for not being “white” or having a white name?

      @@thesandravshow also I want to state that I’m sorry you didn’t get the job offer, it is a strange situation and I also do not believe your dismeanor should have been brought up, especially many years later. And maybe it was some fucked up situation where every person you’ve run into is racist, essentially.the reason I don’t believe it was white privilege is because if it was true, then by that logic there are no people who work at that same company in that same position that was an ethnic name. Everyone would be a Smith and not a Sanchez. And I know that isn’t true
