    Why would anyone give a thumbs down...I don’t understand people! I found this very interesting and also eye opening because I’ve always heard that the people who worked for Lucy and Desi did not make much money at all, in fact that Lucy and Desi paid them very cheaply......but this is the first I’ve heard these facts in TODAY’S money...that makes a huge difference! So, on the contrary Lucy and Desi were quite generous! Also I never knew they donated a lot of their salaries. God bless them.
    I along with most of the world LOVE LUCY and RICKY and FRED and ETHEL! I still watch them on dvd and they still make me laugh out loud. Great, clean honest to goodness fun and brilliant comedy!

    Vivian deserved to make more than Bill. She had much more responsibility and was called upon to get involved in Lucy’s antics, whereas Bill’s part was much more peripheral. Vivian was my favorite of the foursome.

    I wouldn't use the word "donated" as if it was a charity; Lucy and Desi invested it back into their own business and paid themselves a salary, and of course, by owning the rights they received money from the profits and syndication, it made them millions.

    Joint weekly salary paid to Desi and Lucy for each episode. The original asking price was $5,000, but CBS and Desi agreed to knock it down a grand in exchange for granting the couple complete rights to the show. That's a decision that would end up costing the network severely in a matter of years.

      How do you figure that?! CBS bought the full rights from them around the time of the divorce; still owns the rights and has been squeezing every dime out of the shows ever since. You used to be able to see a few select episodes for free on the CBS app, but they shut that down when they reformulated the app to Paramount + Now yuu must subscribe. The show costs next to nothing now just what is needed to maintain the films and the occasional cost to colorize another episode. Its all pure profit for CBS and has been for years, {understand the kids Lucie and Desi Jr. see NOTHING from the actual show. The company left to them "Desilu Too" exists on special new events like the Jamestown Festival and licensing the use of Lucy and Desi's likenesses} As for CBS they continue to add to the billions made from the show and recently they're getting a bit greedy about it. Ultimately they came out the big winner in all of this. You should not think otherwise. Best Jack A.S. VanNote President JAV Communcative Enterprises A Multimedia Firm

    "By 1950 the minimum wage had risen to $0.75 per hour." Had a paper route, dad gone, no welfare back then. 2 cents for a 5 cent newspaper, route of 100 newspapers, had a morning and afternoon route, four dollars per day for six days, $24.00. Sunday newpapers were 5 cents profit. I purchased the newpapers and had to sell all of them to make a profit, a drugstore on my route would buy the spares. that was $29.00 per week with an extra five dollars in tips. Sister also had just an afternoon route, all went to our mom that could not work, we could live on about 45 bucks per week. I was ten years old and delivered newspapers until I was sixteen, could make a lot more money setting pins, but automation killed that job. Was one tough SOB with all that exercise when I was drafted.
    When Nixon signed executive order no longer backed up the buck with gold, inflation skyrocketed and since federal controlled a hidden tax very few people are aware of. Our home values went up with inflation for property taxes, another way we are getting screwed.

The show debuted in 1951, so their salary per episode would be equivalent to (1951 $1 x $9.86 x $5000 per episode = in 2018, $49,300 per episode. Double it if they EACH made that amount. Paltry by today's "per episode salaries, but in 1951, a loaf of bread cost $0.15 and hamburger was 50 cents a pound. The average cost of a house was about $9K.

      John M Or The Partridge Family. Not to speak ill of the dead but just how much money did David Cassidy drink away or lose in dui fines and alimony? Like every teenage girl in the 70’s, I was madly in love with him. Then in 2015, he did a show at a very small venue in The Villages Florida. The image I had of him in my mind did not match up to the reality of the actual person. He was not a nice guy and was rather rude to his aging adoring fans. I did enjoy the recollections of his memories he shared and some of the early photographs that were shown on a screen onstage. He could have lived much longer were it not for his abuse of alcohol most of his life.

      John M Yes I had read about Jack Cassidy dying in a fire. Apparently he had been to several watering holes the night before and fell asleep with a lit cigarette. I think I was the one teenage girl on the planet without any posters of any of the teenage heartthrobs of the 70’s because I grew up poor. Didn’t even start buying record albums until I was 15 and the first album was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John which I paid for with babysitting money. I still have that same album but do not have a turntable to play it on. I have all of the albums Elton John released in the 70’s including a very obscure instrumental titled Friends. I had a friend who was a few years younger than me in 1975 tell me she didn’t like Elton John because he “likes to get in bed with men” lol. How naive kids were back then. I’ll have to pick up the book you mentioned. I am certain it will make for some interesting reading but I am an old lady now and I hope it doesn’t make my hair turn gray. Oops, too late lol. • @jackvannote
      @jackvannote 2 года назад

      @@Chutney1luv I can help you out with that:
      Appearance fees for those programs are determined mainly by the total expenditure available to the show and the scale day rate that has been determined as fair payment for an appearance. As of now; 2022:
      Shows with high budgets are required to pay the SGA/AFTRA Day Rate: $1,082 / Day
      (However, I know of no talk show falling in this category.)
      Shows with Moderate to Low Budgets pay the SGA/AFTRA Day Rate: $379 {Premiere Top rated network talk like Tonight Show}
      And the Ultra Low Budget Agreement which applies to most talk shows as they're very economically produced the SGA/AFTRA Day Rate: Negotiable (but a minimum: $216 must be met.)
      Part of that negotiation will, of course, be the stature and potential drawing capability of the star being engaged, though in the instance of the appearance being primarily to plug their upcoming project even they may acquiesce to the bare minimum. They were contract players. At the time that was the standard amount for players. They didn't even have reruns then, it was Desilu who actually started that in the television show.

    Hi, Rick. I saw this earlier when you released it, but am just getting around to commenting, It is above the cut of many of their shorts. The "Rube-Goldberg" gadget to wash the dogs is highly amusing, for sure. And the screwball scene of giving the baby the same "Rube-Goldberg" treatment at the end is quite funny.
    We see Beth Flowers as the mother, she's one their stalwart supporting players, and Bud Jameson as the Policeman, another favorite regular supporting players, but why no Vernon Dent? He played a Hotel Manager in this, but you left any shot of him out. He's certainly one of their top supporting players and went on to become the Stooges favorite foil.

    I Love Lucy was the first show ever to air a rerun... The network would run old episodes during the summer downtime. Too bad the SAG contract for TV residuals ("royalties") didn't begin until about 1974. With how often this show reruns (and in 100s of countries), you'd be stinking rich just from that!

    To put these salaries into perspective. I found this; The average price for a gallon of gas in 1950 was 18 cents with the price at the end of the decade being 25 cents so it was a bargain to buy gas for 24 cents ten years after 1959. The average cost of a new car was $1,510 in 1950 and by the end of the decade was $2,200.

    The "I Love Lucy" show made far more in syndication for the Lucille Ball estate than her measly salary. During he Dean Martin Roast in the late 70's, one of the jokes mentioned the 3 times a day in was on there in Vegas, where the roasts were filmed at the MGM Grand, on different networks. And that was before cable. Has to be the highest grossing show in syndication.

    • @jackvannote
      @jackvannote 2 года назад

      CBS bought the rights from Desilu at about the time of their Divorce. It was a phenomenal sum paid them at the time, But the syndication, cable, and now internet revenues ALL GOES TO CBS not Ms Ball or her estate or "Desilu Too" the company left to the kids. They see nothing of the profits whatsoever while CBS has grossed billions. From ILL. As for the Children and their Dssilu Too they make money from new events, like the annual Jamestown Festival, and by licensing the likeness of Lucy and Desi and may still hold interest in later Lucy projects particularly the one in which they costarred with their mom though Im not sure of that. Until the late 60's actors usually got paid for the original airing and it's repeat (that season), then usually 2 - 6 more airings if syndicated, then the checks ended. One of the reasons why many actors negotiated an executive producers' credit, because it would mean they owned a piece of a show. Some big network stars would actually get pieces of other network owned shows they had no actual association with; Bob Hope, Milton Beryl, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason, to name a few.

      toben42 Idk why, but I get the feeling that if this show were around today and the same iconic show, streaming wouldn’t be an option, at first. Like the Big Bang Theory. I’m not comparing the two, in terms of cultural impact, but it was a wildly popular show. I don’t recall it ever being on a streaming platform until recently (correct me if I’m wrong). When it finally does hit a streaming platform, it wouldn’t be one of Netflix or Hulu’s wide reach. It would eventually make it on CBS’s own streaming platform.

    Today there is a lot more viewers and commercials. Back in the 1950s TVs were for the upscale household. Along with that; each season was sponsored by a major business like Proctor and Gamble only. They usually acted only 6-7 month out of a year too. Since that is the amount of episodes for a season's sponsorship. Back then it was many episodes for a season like 33 episodes as compare to today's 13-15 episode for a season.

      Richard Kilmer Lucy was originally buried in California. They moved her to Jamestown I think it was 2003 but could be wrong on the year. Yes, she’s in a cemetery right in town. They have a museum there too in downtown Jamestown, but I didn’t go to that. I think she graduated from high school there, and actually started her acting career in the drama class there. Her grave, if you didn’t know how big of a star, Hollywood studio owner, business woman she was, wouldn’t look that much different the any other grave. That’s why it was so surreal. I agree, the area is really pretty, the joke about “NY” was about the taxes, etc.

    ‘52 a five pound bad of sugar cost about fifteen cents. In the 50’s a pork chop from a butcher was just one nickel. Apartments went for anywhere from 10$ to 100$ a month depending union location and size. My grandmother rented an entire three story Victorian home in San Francisco, in 61 for just $9,00 per month.
