We used 3 switches behind the wheel to indicate its position: Left bin, Home, and right bin. Due to time constraints we assumed the wheel would always start in the home position at the start of the program. If the photoresistor read a clear marble, the motor rotated one way until the wheel pressed the right bin button and stopped. then reversed until the home button is pressed again. Other bin, other directions.

You can't see them in this shot, but they are behind the paddle wheel. Actually, now that I think about it, we might have used only one switch and put 3 pegs on the wheel itself for simplicity. The program always assumed it started in home position. Once rotated, the switched just waited to be pressed again by the other peg.

I would if I still had the program. Suffice it to say the wheel would rotate for 10 s or until the light sensor was tripped behind it indicating a marble had gone through.

Those values you should have determined for yourself, it will depend on the marbles, the lighting situation, your setup, etc. I suggest investigating for yourself, and not putting yourself in this position for the next project.
