  • "Tell Denny [Condon] I still love him.... if Rico was here, he'd help me." --August 1970 letter from Joe Barboza to Walter Barnes.
Joe Barboza is back. After perjuring himself at the FBI's behest, Barboza is shipped off to California. But he just can't stay away from Massachusetts and makes multiple trips back home until he's finally arrested in New Bedford in July 1970. And the Feds' cases begin to fall apart.

    11:48. $18,500 in 1968 is the equivalent of $158k today. Barboza/government scam.

Congratulations ladies. A well-put-together archive of Organized Crime from the 1960s. I'm new to this Podcast but plan on listening to all of them.

Would be hilarious if it hadn't actually gone down this way. The Peter Principle applied to law enforcement: brilliant G-Men of the Boston Field Office play Let's Make A Deal with ... Joey Barboza.

Nina, you said "Geraway was already dead". When did he die? I found very little information about him on the net. Another peculiar character, this guy flipped on everyone!

We'll have more about Geraway in the next episode. Some of his stories were completely unbelievable (he was an associate of Jimmy Hoffa!). However, it's pretty clear that Barboza bared his soul to his cell mate in this case. Geraway eventually made his own deal with the government and became an activist for prison and judicial reform. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 44 in Apple Valley, CA while he was working on a campaign to stop the construction of a prison nearby. www.newspapers.com/clip/113049184/geraway-dead/

@@DoubleDeal Thanks for the info. If all of this was written as fiction nobody would believe it! You are giving us a PhD level course in the Boston underworld that is unmatched. I can't wait for your book, and then the eventual movie. Can I play Jack?

It is going to be very difficult to find someone to play Jack, so you might have a shot!🤗

Thanks for your great episode, ladies. Although Barboza must have been a pain in the neck for Southwood, Fitzgerald, Bailey, Condon, and eventually Rico with his demands and unstable behaviour. So what happened to Barboza's crew members Guy Frizzi, Nicky Femia, and Jimmy Kearns?

Love the show as always. Loyal listner and i share it when I can! Listen I have to ask a favor. Could you GET THE NAMES OF BARBOZA S SIBLINGS??? I have a book that gives a brother of one name and then on the "everything" podcast they have different names. As you can see my name is Barboza and I have reason to belive I'm related to him but then I have reason to think otherwise idk. And I want to say straight I'm not offended by anything said about him, he was a murderer a liar and he sent innocent men to jail which almost seems worse than murder. That's horrible, weather he is a distant relative or not. I've wanted to confirm this for along time but can't get anything reliable. Thank you ladies for your help

Thank you Justin! According to the 1940 and 1950 census , Joe had an older brother Donald born roughly 1929, a younger sister Phoebe born in 1933 and a younger brother Anthony born in 1945 or 1946. if you email me Lara@doubledealpodcast.com I will email you back copies of the census records and anything else we have. Nina is working on wikitree profiles for all of our guys, but she hasn't made it around to Joe yet.
