We wear those little puffer skirts in Montana during the winter ( half the year) . I’m always going to charity shops to look for puffer jackets to be recycled into those skirts

I was really rooting for Don to stay in for another week or two (I think he's adorable, and likely a very good sewist, but out of his depths with some of the aspects they demand in the show), but they were right to say goodbye to him this time. I'm guessing Marcus is next in line to go. Really enjoyed this week! Pascha and Ailsa look to me to be the ones to beat going forward.

🎉 I've done a few things with "scraps" between chiffon. I usually hand basted the pieces together then enveloped the right side v thr wrong side of the frabic. Sew sides together. The quilting was done when the item was flat. Then French seamed the sides and attached the handle into the French seam. Very cute as a gift bag and not really much work at all. As a upcycle kind of person it's fun and interesting.
Sometimes I add glittery yarn inside or even sew unusual buttons (outside) along the basted ley lines.

Oh Judith this sounds really cool! Especially with the addition of glittery yarn inside or snazzy buttons. It was a great challenge for sure and introduced many to this new technique!

WARNING! Don't adjust your settings!! Ting and I LOVED RRR Week. First time ever. Well done to the Sewers and the producers on a brilliant episode. So, we didn't have much to analyse or get controversial about ahha, so it may be a bit boring to watch haha. It was a short show as a result!!! What did you think? You know we love your comments, thoughts and analysis!

There's an edge/quilting tool that comes with most sewing machines to enable straight lines to be sewn. Just to let you know virtual slippers have arrived and then I had nowhere to throw them because the show was much better.

There were several makes I liked in the Made to measure. Loved Alex, Pacha, Aislia, loved the top part of Son's dress. Liked Ting's comment, due the lace top of Marcu's outfit. Would be lovely in your Lavenham Blue Colour Stuart. Best Unlocked video so far. Thank you both 😀

I was sad to see Don go, but as they (maybe Patrick) said Don sews on Don time.
I like that Marcus made a man's outfit. The outfit itself reminded me of a beach wedding where the groomsmen wore off white pants that length with off white linen shirts.
Lauren's pink dress is EXACTLY like a dress I owned in the 80s, except mine was turquoise!

I enjoyed week 4, and both of your takes on the episode. I had not heard of the 'confetti' bag either, and it seems to me more of a style over substance. I have made a 'piece of fabric' in this manner though, and used it to make a panel for a cushion cover.
I do think that we are not seeing any proper garments that can demonstrate the contestants ability to fit a garment/pattern to a person/body. Everything seems so very loose and shapeless (their own garments).

I did enjoy this week , and for once I thought the time allowed for the challenges this week was a bit more realistic - nice to see more finished garments ( as a sewer I have enough of my own unfinished projects to look at without watching it on the telly 😂). Sad to see don go, he is obviously a very skilled sewer but ultimately the time constraints worked against him - I just hope I’m as good a sewer as don when / if I’m 80 plus !! I’m loving Ambers historical bits - maybe we should have a campaign to bring back ‘a stitch in time ‘. Thanks again x

Boring NEVER!!!! I was delighted to see them making a bag. In the olden days when I was at Grammar school and they wanted us to take 650 years to make an apron, I was completely turned off sewing for years. I gradually worked my way back and now can make virtually anything but I would NEVER ask someone to make a garment for their first project. I would love to see more home furnishings, cushion covers and so forth just so non-sew-ers can see the possibilities.

It was a good episode this week. Interesting challenges. Could the producers be a bit influenced by project runway, with the emphasis on design 🤔 The quilting thing is confetti quilting. Delphine Brooks of Lady Sew and Sew does this. She has demonstrated it on Sewing Street .
🤔 Pasha is quietly shaping up to be one to watch 👍🏻

I would've added a middle layer of the thin iron on pellon to give some stability. And given the lack of proper quilt rulers, why not use that right angled hook shaped attachment that no one ever uses. Quilting in parallel lines is what the thing is designed for

Hi Stuart and Ting, no one I know EVER heard of confetti quilting- we are all sewers! So we thought, it must be a thing quilters know about! - But as a garment sewer, I enjoy seeing them make a bag. I have to laugh, Ting thought a bag would be EASY compared to a garment...- I am intimidated by the idea of a bag! But that challenge looked intriguing. Do you think that technique would work with my fabric scraps, as they are not primarily cotton, but rather wool, viscose, stretch, etc.? Another hobby to try!! That's all I need!

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  4 месяца назад

Not many of my quilter mates had heard of it either so not sure how we missed it!! Oooo I think it would work EVEN BETTER with your scraps, especially wool. Patchwork cotton PRINTs have a right and wrong side and it doesn't really work, See the issue with Suzy turning her tape measure fabric around. But with stretch and wool. No issue really as both sides work. Good luck with your new hobby and keep us updated if you have ago over this series of the bee!!

I was going to comment last week that rather than fighting the machine I would have done a buttonhole by hand when Janet had issues - I have three sewing machines and they all do buttonholes differently so could see how under pressure you could struggle with a different machine. But then Marcus got caught with the machine not buttonholing correctly this episode! You have to wonder if the machines are also up to the level of sewing they are doing, including pace. To handle the levels of thickness and different fabrics plus sustained sewing you need a decent midrange machine at least. I really liked the thinking in Marcus’s jacket ( even if it didn’t meet the colour brief), and thought a number of the reuse creations with more time could be genuinely wearable. I agree with Don just struggling with the time, he is obviously a thoughtful methodical very skilled sewer. I’m thinking Alix, Pascha, Alisa, Georgie and John for the final five, but can’t go any further than that (and not a new watcher - just switched accounts)

    • @TheWoolpatch

It took me all of my courage last year to cut off the skirt of my wedding dress. I made a blouse and put a little detail into it to match it with a pair of trousers i had made before. I wore both at the party of our 25th wedding anniversary. There ist still a lot of fabric left. Next time I will dye it before making the next garment, as white ist actually not my colour. 😊

When I said "a bouquet to Kiell" the other week, I didn't realise it was a prophesy!
As for the actual sewing, I was fascinated with the confetti quilting, and hadn't heard of it before. They were asked to cut their pieces into assorted sizes, so maybe they _could_ have left a long strip in the mix, and finger-twisted it, and laid it down in a spiral, and called it a galaxy, and put small white pieces and large dark pieces in the gaps to represent stars.

I thought Luke's white/cream one was ridiculous, with the jacket just stuck on the bottom of the skirt. At least Alex had cut the sleeves of her jacket and sewn a side seam, it actually looked wearable. Suzie's looked wearable as well.

I have done the confetti quilting. I think it is quite well known in “textile art” circles rather than standard sewing/quilting. I used my “fabric” to make a decorative elephant. With the wedding dress challenge they could practice the pattern even if not with their actual dress fabric. And as they have the same model each week by now they should have a good idea of their measurements. I thought the dyeing - which is difficult - was done really well. maybe they had help? I didn’t like many of the finished garments, there is too much of a trend on huge oversized garments - how is that fitting to a body?

I've finally decided that the organza bag really should have been on the Holiday episode, and the tablecloth blouse on the Recycle episode. The organza and bag hardware were new, as were those little scrap bits. The tablecloths were not new.
But if they did put the organza bag as the first challenge on the Holiday episode, then the nautical recycle bag, they'd have TWO bags in one show.
Maybe that's why the Tablecloths were on the holiday episode, and the organza bag on the recycle episode?

Yup, enjoyed it too - but...I did throw a slipper. At the amount of time for the Made to Measure. I was beginning to think I'd imagined they used to have more time for this, so I picked a random past episode from Iplayer - season 2 episode 4, they were making a prom dress for a teenager. And yes, they had 7 hours. I felt SO sad when Marcus's men's waistcoat turned out all wobbly around the hem - when his wife had sacrificed her wedding dress for it ffs! WHY can't they go back to giving them a proper working day for the MTM? They must think we enjoy seeing tears and botch ups I guess.

Oh I agree - Time allocated for tasks is the main aspect that is stopping this programme from being very successful, not only for the sewers to actually make great garments but for us the audience to enjoy seeing some stunning makes and then to get excited about the judging and really looking at it in detail to see who wins and getting attached to the sewers because we value their talent. The time is stopping their real talent and skills from shining.

  • @joysedgwick812
    @joysedgwick812 4 месяца назад

Got to be honest, I feel that really stunning finishes are missing this year. As ever your discussion adds to my enjoyment of the programme. Sad to see Don go in a way, his sewing is really good, just slower than required and he does try to follow the brief. Marcus was surely one of those people who had to be constantly reminded to “read the question”!!

It's hard to comment because I can't watch the show, not available here. I would think that if the show is called Sewing Bee, I would think the sewing skill would count top priority. Project Runway was more for over the top creations and creativity for those hoping to get into the scene. I find the judging puzzling but as I said I can't watch the show. Why didn't you throw an Arctic snow boot at the one color outfit that wasn't one color?
Now for something completely different (channeling Monty Python)- I got my yarn order! It is a beautiful, soft yarn. I'm happy. Someone was brilliant!

To me, a lot of the contestants seem very similar this year in terms of personality and sewing ability which is why no clear favourites are emerging. Having said that, this week Pascha started to come through as one to watch and I also like Lauren because she has a good eye for spotting a design and going for it. This year’s crop of male contestants seem particularly weak and Marcus looks like his days are numbered.

The recycle challenge was pathetic. They took a pile of unwanted clothes and turned them into another pile of unwearable items. I think only 3 of the garments were anything like wearable. Who would wear a dress with a puffer jacket tacked onto the hem !!!
