I was very sad when he retired. He retired so young he could of played more years. I knew it had to be because of his family. I hope that they love him and appreciate him because I think he is great and deserves all the love. I miss him so much
Donny was my favorite player and a God to me, however his last year he batted 288 with 7 home runs and 49 RBI's. As a first baseman those numbers are bad. he was done. If true i'm shocked the yankees offered him a deal. On a side note i was mattingly's batboy in 95'. Greatest memory ever
What I remember hearing was Mattingly's wife had a serious problem with alcohol or addiction... Something along those lines. It got to a really serious place and Donnie couldn't continue to spend most of the year away from home because it was seriously effecting his kids. So Donnie retired because his children's home life got really bad and his wife wasn't in a good place at all. Donnie needed to be home to stabilize his family. Now I remind people this is what I remember back when he retired decades ago. Im not a 100 percent I remembered all that correctly it's been a long time. So take it with a grain of salt. Donnie's my all time favorite and don't want to spread bad info like that. But pretty sure I'm remembering it correctly as Mattingly meant alot to me as a kid. So I remember being sad he retired and looking into why as much as I could reading whatever I could find on why he retired. I also remember Mattingly was just going to take a year off to sort out his family issues and he seriously considered returning in 1997 which Steinbrenner promised he would happily resign him. But Mattingly seeing how great a job Tino Martinez did with impressive numbers Mattingly hadn't had since 1989... Plus seeing the Yanks win the world series... Made Mattingly decide it was best for himself and the team he stayed retired. The situation had changed and the Yanks moved on sucessfully.

I am born, raised, and still live in Evansville where Don is from and still lives. He is a wonderful person and your memory is correct.
Donny - be sure to hold that against your boys whenever they step out of line or show you any disrespect: "You know what I sacrificed for YOU!"
very interesting
Post hoc rationalizing.
