  • Check out these piping plovers on the beach today! I can see at least 14, which is more than I have ever seen together! The white flags on two of these birds are part of a research study from Environment and Climate Change Canada. These tiny friends have stopped on our beach to refuel after a long journey from Turks and Caicos, and they’ll soon embark on an even longer one to the coasts of Canada : a total of 3500 miles for a bird that only weighs about 50 grams! If you’re headed to a lowcountry beach this week, keep an eye out for these traveling friends, and always keep dogs and people far enough from them that they don’t waste valuable time and energy avoiding you! Safe journey, little plovers!
