    Thanks, very good information, I am much more confident using my scope without worrying about damaging it.

    thank you iwas going to make one but wasnt aware of resistor thanks again.

    Your series resistor is not a voltage attenuator! It is a current limiter. Given 4 volts at the probe, through a 10k ohm resistor, you have a current of 0.4 mA (400 microamps). Protection yes, overvoltage protection no.

      How do u build a protected one.?

    Cool. I use a us quarter with a back probe laid across it to get waveform off COP. Do you think I can just use my hantek 20:1 attenuator for potection? I have a pico 2204A.

    Could I see the hantek lead and 2p for comparison,just out of interest

    Nice one buddy. You may consider inverting the signal in the software at the scope, as that waveform looks upside down to me.
    Kind regards, Joe

    Oh man my son just told me....Another one of my heroes away. A man small in stature but an absolute giant in the racing world, aviation and my mind. I feel very stupid and sorry for that last comment I made about you enjoying the race week end. I'll leave it at that as I dunno what else to say.........

      you were never to know, ian but i'll be honoured to maybe be part of a tribute at the track this weekend. Truly amazing reactions from around the world

    Great subject, but be aware the resistor technique has issues as presented, the 1/4w 10K used is not high voltage rated and will break down with Kv and the value is insufficient to limit the voltage seen on the scope in the event of an arc over condition.

    Hello sir!congrats for your information and tips you sharing with us!I want to ask you about the multisignal coil at the same channel with the cooper bar, I want to make one and (because my English is not very good)I don't understand which is the best for your opinion way to connect the cooper bar with the pico 4425 for safety to avoid any damage from a bad coil spike? What kind of lead do you prefer? To make a handmade with capacitor ,resistance,attenuator, I also have from pico the secondary ignition pickup clamp (capacitive with bnc) like this you assembly and review ? I look forward to your reply!best regards!

      Capacitive clamp and insulate the copper bar

      @@davesterl thank you very much for your fast response!!can I solder a wire to cooper bar and the end of this wire has a terminal small or a screw to connect the clamp or this may affect the signal?do you also have something material for good insulate to recommend?

    Can you tell me what a H25 lead will read on a lad scope? How many mv or v per Kv? I’m trying to scope my brigs and Stratton single cylinder magneto engine.
    I am on 10v ranger and getting a 70v spike for 4ns ( yes nano seconds) I’m sure this is very wrong but I have nothing to compare it to.

    • @davesterl
      @davesterl  4 года назад +1

      An HT25 lead is 10,000 : 1

    • @paulmeynell8866
      @paulmeynell8866 4 года назад

      Yep 100mv = 1000v just seen a video that confirms it.
      I’m getting 70v ( 700,000v) for 4ns
      or 70v must be leaking through the ht lead.
      I’m going to fit a new magneto tomorrow, so hopefully I should get a proper signal ,
      Many thanks
      P

    Nice explanation mate ... I’m an ignorant and a half when it comes to scopes but something that I thought now, Are attenuators not enough to protect the scope and does attenuators weakens the signal ?
    Cheers mate 👍
    Nice wee tribute to Niki Lauda certainly an inspiration and example of a man. RIP NIKI very sad day 😢

      Hey igor, aye the normal use of the attenuator is if your testing a component that will be producing a voltage outside the range of the scope. Say petrol injectors will normally peak at 70 to 100volts. This scope safe business is for an unexpected spike of maybe a few thousand from the high voltage of a secondary which no scope can take. Hope that makes sense. Yes the announcement of niki lauda touched the hearts of many.
