The thing I loved the most was the slip matched top with straight grain and no flame at all. When you spray wood, the wood surface absorbs the water. Upon taking in the trace amount of water, the bright areas darken as it is heavier, and the dark features darken even further. This enhances visual definition until the surface dries.

It is nice, but the problem with finishes like that where the flame appears like a charcoal Black from the staining is that you lose all movement in the top when moving the guitar in the light at different angles, typically. Had a few like that myself and you can see such an effect, or lack of, in the video.

It has been suggested that Les Paul preferred the DeArmond tone and fitted one in the neck position of his Number 1 Goldtop. Les’s tech Tom Doyle disputes this, reporting that Les wound his own pickups using DeArmond magnets. Perhaps the staple P-90 was designed to get the DeArmond tone from a Gibson-branded pickup and keep Les sweet. Gibson installed them on various jazzboxes as well as pre-1957 Les Paul Customs.

I'm a Fender strat and tele guy. Never got into a Gibo, tried but prefer the sound of single coils. What I will say is I think a Gibo Les Paul is the most beautiful guitar to look at. I seen a custom shop one in guitar guitar in Edinburgh a few years ago for £8500 and it had the most beautiful lemon flame top I have ever seen on a guitar. I looked it and said why can't you sound like a strat. Beautiful guitars but unfortunately humbuckers are not my sound.

Wide flame looks nicer on a Les Paul, suits the traditional styling better, keeps it from looking a bit too flashy/busy. Especially when paired with a vintage kind of sunburst finish.
Tight flame tops look really good on more modern looking guitars like PRS Custom 22/24, or on guitars with more outlandish colours.

Just as an FYI, the intro to "Sweet Home Alabama" was played on a Fender Stratocaster, with the middle-and-bridge pickup selection. 😛
As for the difference between the P-90 and the Alnico 5 "Staples" pickup, a P-90 has steel adjustable pole pieces connecting to two magnet bars underneath the bobbin - one magnet per 3 strings --- while the Alnico 5's staple pole pieces are the actual magnets. There is no magnet bar underneath.
Les Paul preferred the Alnico 5 pickup for the neck position because it sounds brighter than a P-90, and he even put them in the Goldtop prototypes that he and Mary Ford were using before the official release of the Les Paul in 1952.

Tight flame is everywhere. Foto Flame anyone? I like a wide or thick flame, and the more unique the better. Now most guitars have a straight flame, or a V shaped one. I prefer a upside down V nice and thick. But it doesn't always work on every guitar or color. Some colors or burst look better with certain types of flames. Gibson doesn't do a lot of crazy colors like say, Tom Anderson. But if you have ever seen a Tom Anderson with a Wake Surf, and the upside down V is it incredible. PRS does a similar look as well, and Suhr too. Gibson tear drop maybe similar? I know they do at least one, but can't remember the name.
