Oh man, oh got the full-up kit! That will be nice as you can pack it out for all kind of different scenarios! Good haul! Good luck with that antenna :D $600 is a smokin deal for all that!
I got just about everything but the kitchen sink. I've had it out a few times and it is a blast. I'm looking forward to more ultra-portable operation.
Thank you for the nice kudos for our hamfest!
That 817nd looks vaguely familiar!! Enjoy, Mike!
Thanks again.
Nice haul! The US needs to get rid of AM/PM and switch to 24 hr time. Been using 24 hour time for 24 years now thanks to an old job of mine and use it on as many things as I can (those kitchen appliances don't offer such functionality). Makes more sense. Enjoy the new radio! Very nice find with the accessories! 73!
24 hour time does have its advantages. I hate doing the zulu time math in my head, so this clock will help.
As I begin to figure out what I'm looking at, I'll start hitting The Yard too. You made quite a haul🥂💯👍🏾✔️🎯
It was a good haul before the radio. Did the seller also change the oil on your car and rotate the tires? What a deal!! U-rah-rah
What's wrong with the radio? I am not a Yaesu guy but I have a few included the 857D and I like them..
@@jneale5204 I meant he had a nice haul and the deal he got on the radio and accessories made it even better. It was a poorly constructed sentence, sorry.
@@45autoGlad to understand your comment, because it seemed like a helluva deal to me, and I came here to understand why you didn’t think so… glad to know we agree!
It does feel like he was practically giving it away. Especially when all the accessories came out of the box when I asked him about the rig.
I consider myself quite lucky to have a plethora of ham radios in my collection, which includes the IC-705 and KX2. Even with those, my 818nd is in my top 3 favorite radios simply because of the nice warm audio that I receive while operating, especially with CW.
Also I find the real advantage of that Windcamp battery is in the switch. The ft817 draws a few milliamps while turned off so having that switch keeps your battery from being drained while not in use.

Great bits of info, ty 🎉
You found some great deals there Michael!
Love to see hamfest stuff!😲🤓🇺🇸
Congrats on the great finds!
What a grab, congrats and thanks for another great video!
Sweet little radio with a lots of great accessories! Have fun!
That is quite a find. Excellent
Nice find, OM.
Hi Michael,
That 817 was a nice find with all those accessories. When you suction the Panavise to a table and it releases after a few minutes, put a little petroleum jelly around the edge. It will now hold suction almost indefinitely. Some rubbing alcohol can be used for the cleanup. 73 WJ3U
Great finds Michael especially the FT-817 ! Thanks for sharing !
Wow..great radio haul and awesome haul overall!
Good haul!
I have the same radio. It’s fun!
I also have the same shirt!
Good deal!
Congrats Michael, excellent haul!!!
Congratulations on your finds!!
Michael, great video really enjoyed all the gear you purchased at the ham fest, especially the Yaesu 817nd, a great qrp radio! Enjoy and thank you for sharing.
Some real great finds, priced in your favor Michael, can't wait to see them all in use....73s KI4TOL
You got a really good deal on the 817 with accessories, I hope they are all fully functional for you, I love my 817, purchased new not long after they first came out it has been on many vacations with me, home and abroad, hours of cw pleasure and many many great contacts, the ultimate little shack in a box in my opinion, Enjoy 😉
So far so good, I've had the radio on 4 or 5 different bands and it seems to work as it should. Next up is improving my CW skills.
Congrats on the Gear Haul....
I never noticed the broken clock. Glad you have a new one. You got a great deal on the 817. Congratulations!
That broken clock, at least, is right once a day.
One of these days I will go to a ham fest
I’ve done two POTA’s with that antenna MFJ-1899t. Also used it on 40 meters just for rag chewing. I like it a lot. De n5vwn
Sweet!
What a haul! Great deal on the qrp radio kit
I have the 818 with the same accessories. Great little radio. Have fun!
$600 including all those accessories is a fantastic deal. I have an 818 that I've really been enjoying I'm sure you will as well. 73, George
I thought so, too. I've had the radio out a few times and it is so much fun.
Great find 👍
Good finds!
Looks like you got a good haul! Love the old school scanner running on the shelf.
I bought that at a hamfest too. I've been slowly searching for crystals and so far found one for a local repeater, 146.52, and marine channel 16.
SWEET DEAL🎉😊😮
I love rhat radio. Since I am 99% CW I Love my Penntek TR-35 & my TR-45L skinny, but I wish there was a 15, 12, & 10M option on them for the higher MUF years. It is funny how each rig affects us induvidually! Cheers, Davey --KU9L
I think you are right. I've had this radio out a few times and it is a lot of fun to operate.
My 817ND is my goto radio for field qrp operations, you really did very well considering pricing vs all the stuff you got with it. ❤
Dang that's a heck of a deal you got on that 817! Great radio, you'll love it.
I had it out a few times and it has been a blast so far. Thank you.
Congratulations! An excellent radio! I have my ‘817ND for some 15 years now and it still works as a horse, not a problem ever during tens of business trips in the hotels and activations in the fields. For the tuner, I was and am using the Elecraft T-1, so far the best QRP tuner I ever had. The only thing I would highly recommend, is to install a Bhi company’s DSP module designed specifically for this radio (I hope, they still produce it). It only takes a minor intervention to the radio, like drilling 2 tiny holes in the upper cover, but its effect is a tremendous improvement in receive quality. Wish you lots of fun! 72! Linas LY2H
Thanks, a DSP module may be a nice upgrade, just for the ability to have a notch filter, which this rig is sorely lacking.
I'm excited for your 817nd find! I look forward to your report on your experience with it.
I've had it out a couple times and so far so good. This weekend I'll do a video with it.
Very nice, swap meets rock! I love having a panavise, and I got a ft-818 just before the discontinued notice, added the Wincamp, and have been very happy with it.
That Yaesu SCU17 is pretty much an pre-digirig device, it's a USB soundcard and rs232 serial interface, I used one with an Icom IC-746Pro, with a Icom CT-17 for the C-IV interface via the serial port on the Yaesu SCU17, and the industry standard 6 pin mini din cable.
But of course, the DigiRig, does all of that in a tiny little box :)
To get that rig, WITH all of those accessories at one time, I might've grabbed it before u (IF I'd only been there)😂
It seems like I always just miss the super deals. This time I actually snagged one.
I also had a FT-817nd and installed Windcamp battery. It is great.
Great score! 73 w3rrm
Good for you Michael, you found some good stuff and at a good price. That is what makes it fun. Can't wait to see the 817 in action. Thank you for sharing.
I'll have it out testing a new antenna this weekend. Unfortunately the video will take a few weeks as I have a backlog of content.
Great find, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with that rig.
Yes, you can use the SCU-17 with the FT-891. CAT goes directly from the radio to PC using the USB cable. Audio goes through the SCU-17. The documentation does not show it that way, but that is how it works.
That’s a fabulous deal. I have one and I love it!! 👍
Congratulations on the FT-817nd. It's a great radio. I too am lucky to have a plethora of radios but the FT-817/818 hold a special place in my heart. There's just something very special about that radio. There's never been anything in this form factor quite like it. It's a true classic.
Thanks, I've had the rig out a few times now and it really is a lot of fun to operate.
Love my 817 I have a SCU 17 and run 3 watts js8 ft8 with a win 10 laptop. I also put a set of Portable Zero rails on it and made it a great portable rig. vk5cz ..
Michael, you'll love the 817! I've had mine for several years, it's a great little radio. And going portable, you have a "shack in the box" while you're out! 73s, Doug N4UAG
$600 for unobtainium is not a bad price at all. Especially with all the goodies.
I thought so too. These little rigs certainly have a following.
Some nice finds! The 817 looks like fun. I've alwats wanted to try an 817/818 sometime.
Thank you. It is a lot of fun. The few times I had it out have been a blast.
Wow...you struck gold on that deal! Congrats! Nice find on the FT-817nd Michael! I love my FT-817nd. It is my 3rd one and I am keeping this one. When this radio came out it was way ahead of its time. A micro sized shack in a box with internal battery power! I am partial to this radio and feel people have needlessly shoved it aside for all the new flavor of the month QRP rigs. Yes, like many other radios the CW filter is a must. But I find it hears very well right alongside of several of my other radios. The last one I sold had the 'Palm Harbor' legs like yours. I didn't realize they were no longer available, or I would have taken them off to keep. Hang on to that little rig and have fun!
I totally agree, this radio was ahead of its time. I always wanted one, and had the chance a couple of times to buy one cheap, but for whatever reason never acted on it. Finding this one is a dream come true.
Fantastic haul, Michael! Especially with the 817 already having the Wincamp battery kit.
Besides the better chemistry, a great feature of that battery is the hard switch that prevents the radio's parasitic draw from draining the battery while not in use.
That battery is amazing and I'm surprised at how long it lasts.
I have the ARRL Antenna anthology....nice read! 73 de VK2AOE.
Some thoughts on the 817 (818). I explain the 817 like this. Icom Ic-705, IC-7300 are like the Windows operating system. Touch and point and pretty easy to use. The 817/818 is like Linux. Once you get it figured out it won't let you down. It is magical. Make sure to check the batteries in the tuner. The LDG manual says to replace them every 6 months if they need it or not and I forgot. Now I've got leaky batteries and corrosion but I digress. Hope it serves you well for years to come. There is a reason it's been around for 21 years. It's that good.
I agree. People don't like Yaesus because of their menus and odd buttons, but once you figure out the mindset of the Yaesu engineers, their design is almost intuitive.
you Scored !!
Yes, I am so glad to have installthe Windcamp battery replacement on my FT-818nd. It is much better than the original as you said.
However, I have found the small display a bit hard to read. 😊
I agree, the display is hard to read.
The FT-817....I think that is the rig Sir Peter Parker runs (VK3YE).
Somebody wanted out of QRP really badly! Five watts? Sounds like CB to me. Reminds me of the almost new GMC Electric Hummer I recently saw on the used car lot of the local Chevy dealer. For sale with less than 3,000 miles on it. There are some things in life that are flat-out unnatural. QRP and CW iare among those for ham radio in the 21st century. If it isn't running on three-phase 4160 VAC, it's all QRP. 73
What a haul on the 817, the scu-17 and ldg AT go for $150 each used, great price at $600 total. I have an 817, looking forward to QRP videos with it, teach me some tricks I don't know 👌
It was the best hamfest deal I've seen in a long time.
If the SCU has the DB9 connector for CAT control, let me know if you get the damned thing to work correctly! (Mine is a piece of..... work). Nice tuner though! I love my LDG.
Have you ever tested the power draw on a 100w rig dialed back to 5 or 10w? On SSB an 857d still draws about half the power that it draws at 100w (3.3A vs ~7A), and on CW it's about 1/3 (4.5A vs 14.5A). Not a huge savings. My 818 uses considerably less power at 6w (1.1A SSB, 1.2A CW). The 817/818 is a great little radio.
I have that same tuner; it's great.
Congrats on that find, you got a great setup at a great price.
I haven't done extensive power testing, but I know my FT-891 draws about 1 amp on receive. All that power is used to keep the display, processor, and internal functions running. If you dial the transmit power down, that overhead does not go away. The overall power budget is one of the reason's why the FT-891 is a poor choice as a QRP rig, but in every other respect, a brilliant portable radio.
Absolutely, and I'm sure there's some extra overhead on Tx, too. Before Field Day I tested a few radios into a dummy load and was really surprised how much I didn't save by dropping the power. Not super scientific, but as good as I could do.
If I didn't have the 857 (or two), I'd certainly have an 891. But when you want to sip a battery, you cannot go wrong with the 817/818. I think it was OH8STN who did a video on running a QRP rig with an amplifier for 100w performance with a battery-friendly power draw.
Anyway, congrats on that killer deal on the 817 setup. I wouldn't have hesitated for a second for all that goodliness at that price. I was biting my nails waiting for you to say it had the CW/SSB filter installed. :D
73!@@KB9VBRAntennas
You can also build transceivers, but it’s easier to buy
I can also grow my own wheat, grind it, and bake bread. But who has time for that?
RUclips hears Panavice as Pan of Ice.
What model type of antenna came with that kit? Have you tested it?
I believe it is the MFJ-1899, but it looks identical to the Gabil GRA-1899: amzn.to/3G2rz6m. I haven't put the antenna on the air yet.
Any filters inside of it?
No filters. I may invest in the CW filter though.
Ohhhhhhhh, thats just bragging! Man you got a great deal!
There is no such time as 00. It should be 24. Just think about it what time is it after 2459 and 59 seconds?

YOU MEAN **GREAT COLLECTOR**, RIGHT?
I have followed you since I first got my Technician ticket in Oct 21. I like how you do videos and pick content, Mike. It was a pleasure hunting you on POTA recently. DE KO4TXV
Thank you, I'm glad to be able to get you in the log.
That looks like you had a amazing shopping trip. Congratulations on the haul Michael!
