When I saw the title, I thought she would be covering Hwasa's Maria. Kim Ah Joong's Maria is a song that I don't usually think of most idols covering because of how hard it is. I am so so soooo proud of Yena for the strides She is making in the Kpop industry post-Izone. I have to admit I was not expecting her to rise above everyone else who went solo and it makes me so happy to see how She's cementing her place as an absolute ace.
Tbh, whenever I see “Maria” I see Hwasa but not her song. Bc Hwasa have such a unique voice and her song is super nice, I don’t think anyone can make her song sounds as unique as her or more beautiful than her! A lot of shows process the vocals before broadcast, fixing the unstable volume you get from handheld mics, removing noise, and some auto tuning. The vox are way too clean. Her vocal tone color is unique and evokes a lot of emotions and if you combine that with her almost flawless technique, it's almost unbeatable. In my personal opinion even singers like Tayeon, IU, Wendy, Solar, Wheein doesn't come close to her. Suhhyun from AKMU is also an exceptional singer as well, but she still needs some catching up to do. The only ones that have similar capabilities are probably Ailee and Sohyang. They are masters of their craft.
Idk I just listened to solji’s cover and it’s truly not very mind blowing.. her voice is just deeper and resembles a more western style. She doesn’t have much range to the song and basically belts the whole thing idk I’m just not impressed honestly.

It was a good performance but why does it seems like she was lip syncing. The audio is too smooth for a live stage but don't get me wrong , i know yena is a good singer and i am a fan of her😅 but kinda wish she was singing it 100% live coz i am not a fan of lip syncing/super loud pre recorded back track. I prefer the raw vocal.
It's probably because of post production, most shows nowadays try to smooth out even live stages. I think she was singing live when she recorded her stage, because she got veins on her neck everytime she was belting, most probably the producers of the show just smoothed out her vocals
