Perception in sports is often percieved as reality. Once a narrative gets built around someone its hard to shake it off. People in power making decisions are often as educated as casual fans. They often "guess" and go with the popular choice. Owners have the ultimate power. None of them know football. So thats why. They was lazy to evaluate De Gea. Just rolled with the narrative. We seen many crappy goalkeepers remain starters in big teams. We seen many great ones get burried in the depth chart for years.

@@erikpuka2627 True, but in this case I don't think so, there was no way he was going to get anything close to what United were paying him...he probably realized that after a whole season out and lowered his demands, because there was significant interest after he left, even United wanted to keep him but on lower wages so negotiations broke down mid season.
