Love this. Mari Boine is very influential to Norwegian female singers. She was also a part of Peter Gabriel's world music Project. The high notes shes doing on this one is typical Mari Boine. I think it's a Eagle scream. Check out Mari Boine Eagle Brother live at Oslo Opera house. 👌
I fully second your suggestion of the live version of "Eagle Brother" at the Oslo opera house, it might be my overall favourite live performance by Mari Boine and with more than a million views, it's also the most-played clip of her on youtube (if I'm not mistaken). The videoclip of Mari Boine's performance of "Gilvve gollát/Sow Your Gold" with KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra) is also highly recommendable as well as the clip of her entire concert at Jazz Baltica in 1997 (featuring the original line-up of her band): ruclips.net/video/FsD2Z90oR3s/видео.html As regards cover-versions, Gunnhild Sundli, the vocalist of my overall favourite Folk Rock band Gåte, sang Mari Boine's "Etno Jenny" when Mari Boine was included in the Rockheim Hall of Fame in Norway in 2015, and as you can see in the clip, Mari Boine herself obviously appreciated it: ruclips.net/video/FVJ2H59FhJQ/видео.html
Aurora is The Voice calling to Elsa in Disney's "Frozen 2", and it's funny because when Disney contacted her in 2019 to be in Frozen 2, they asked if she could "joik", and she said this in an interview: Aurora: I might have lied a bit. Or I guess I said that I could sing with with natural power, in a way that could be reminiscent of joik, although I might not know Sami joik very well. Now she knows how to joik 😁
Yeah, I was aware that she did Frozen 2, although, I found out more recently. I actually watched Frozen 2 with my daughter before I even knew Aurora existed.
Great reaction, I love this performance, and her high whistle notes are awesome. Aurora is definitely not a show off vocalists, she can belt and do acrobatics with her voice though, and IMO, better than all of the popular "mainstream" singers. Thanks, looking forward to more Aurora.
Great reaction👍 I really love this performance, and that she made the yoik her own😍😍 The yoik "Máze" is primarily about the fight to stop the development of the Alta-Kautokeino watercourse. Yoik is a traditional form of song in Sámi music performed by the Sámi people of Sapmi in Northern Europe (Norway, Sweden and Finland) A performer of joik is called a joikaaja (in Finnish), a joiker (in Norwegian, and anglicised) or jojkare (in Swedish). Originally, joik referred to only one of several Sami singing styles, but in English the word is often used to refer to all types of traditional Sami singing. As an art form, each joik is meant to reflect or evoke a person, animal, or place. So you for example yoik an animal/person/nature… The few words she sang was in the Sámi language, and YT definitely doesn’t know anything about that lol Mari Boine (Boineh) is an amazing artist, and highly appreciated in Norway and other countries👍❤️
@@lillm6874 Thank you so much. I know I can count on you to give me the type of detail I'm looking for. Love it. I'm going to look into the Sami people further.
Actually, this is a yoik,(or joijk) in the indigenous Sami culture, which used to be called Lapps. They are completely distinct from the Germanic Scandinavian cultures, thus not Vikings at all. They have been, up until recently, oppressed by the dominant cultures.
I don't know if Aurora and Eivor (who performed Trollabundin, which you refer to) have ever performed together, but I do notice they follow each other on Instagram, so they are aware of each other. Actually, both have sung the female vocals on Wardruna's, Helvegen, but not at the same time (you need to listen to a performance of this). I would love to hear them perform together. Likewise, I would lovee to hear Aurora do more Sami joik style singing, she's got the perfect voice and heart for it. Aurora has often spoken of her love for Norwegian folk music, and she has mentioned Mari Boine, before, who's song she covered here. I saw a photograph on Instagram, of Aurora hugging Mari Boine at this festival.
@@thevikingbuddha - There are some versions of it, where Eivor sings the part Aurora sings, but I don't think it is strictly with Wardruna, just Einar, their lead singer. Funny, I was thinking of Eivor just before you mentioned her. This definitely reminds me of her, especially that performance you referenced. Very cool to see this more "traditional" side of Aurora. No live versions, but both are worth checking out.
this is a very special performance. it's the first time she sings a yoik. i hope, she will find some own yoiks. i mean, there are some early tiny steps towards it, like in queendom (check the loustic version, if you like). but i mean a traditional one. thanks for your reaction. btw: i wonder when you will react to the band 'heilung'.
