As an amateur genealogist I find it fascinating that people get so upset over things people did in the past. I had a guy who wanted to prove that the family did not have slaves in the 1800s. I started to work and quickly found out that the family story was true and his family owned 6 slaves. He was so upset and kept saying “I don’t know what to do with this” I said that you didn’t know those people, they have no affect on your life or anyone else’s life today. History is nothing more than past life’s and the choices those people made. The norms back then do not reflect the norms today. But to be upset over something someone did 80 to 250 years ago is silly.
I am surprised that you don't see the connection. Genealogy is a study of how we became who we are, hence the name of the show "Who do you think you are". Just as people show pride that their ancestor served in WWI, WWI, etc "something someone did 80 to 250 years ago" means that they can also be chagrined that people they are related to made decisions in a way that the person today would find aberrant. It is the thought that if one lived at that time, one would have stood up for what was right, and the implication that a relative - a reflection of the values passed down had a defect of character. If someone found a person in their tree was a serial killer, wouldn't it be reasonable to contemplate that the impossible could be within the possible? It is the desire to connect to the past that you are claiming people should deny, which means you view genealogy as solely stats of birth and death.
To say people have no connection to their ancestors is to say they have no connection to their parents or siblings. Even the fact people are so bothered or encouraged by it is further evidence of the significance of genetics.
@@ThisTall You know your parents and siblings. Maybe you know your grandparents. But the people before that are strangers. You may resemble them, in reality they are strangers. I know a guy who found his biological dad. He was 25 and his dad was 50. They literally had nothing in common. When we spoke afterwards he said he was a stranger and there was no connection. It is interesting to have colorful people in your family. My half brother has a murderer in his family. He and I find it humorous. I still haven’t seen any murderous intent in him, yet😂.

tbh you are not very smart. are you american?
Big deal. He was just a soldier like millions of others.
I don’t know why I’m not surprised by this.
You should see joes ancestors. Big time plantation and slave owners.
I came to say something similar.
They didn’t manage to get them translated? This weird mythical language, German. You can literally take a photo of the document with your phone and press translate.
It’s Chelsea Handler, so…
Did you watch the video? Half of it is spent going over the translation. 3:41
The (pre)war documents have the old German font, Apps are not able to translate them. But you are right, at least Grandma's letter should have been easy.
This is why people who want reparations for oppressed groups of the past are out to lunch.
Hey, at some point in time we all had relatives that were a part of some wars and conflicts. Every single one of us.
The Apple didn’t fall far
Anyone else thinking google translate would’ve saved some time?
ok but with such sensitive things you don't want too many translation mistakes do you?
We are not to take on the burden of history, only learn and never forget.
We are not here to judge history with the social rules of the present. We are here to learn from the past regardless or whether it was entertaining or horrific. What we learn from the past we can use in the present to build a better future but we cannot change the past and we cannot judge the past and we cannot be responsible for the past. There will be a time in the future when people might want to judge us now and we wouldn't appreciate that. Different generations see things differently and no one generation get's everything correct or lives without flaws. Judging people of the past without living in their era is probably one of the rudest and most ill-informed things you can do to the memory of people who lived their lives before you.
Interesting as my maternal grandfather left Germany before WWI- going first to England and then to the US. His two brothers served in WW1 and the eldest one killed in France. They were children of a middle class farmer and lived on the farm until after WW2 when it became a cooperative under the East German rule. Stories told about the time near then end of WW2 until the fall of the Berlin Wall from letters and my grandfather visiting were of privation, loss of rights, and poverty.
For a brother who knows about history, you would think he would try and do at least a rudimentary translation?
Hmmmmmm imagine my shock..
She’s despicable.
why?
I have debated her on Facebook! She is very uneducated!
As Asimov said about his country fellowes: there is the cult of ignorance in our country. I‘ve traveled widely through the USA and was shocked about so many uneducated people who have no idea even about their own continent.
I can tell that she is uneducated.
A bit sad that folks don't know their grandparents. And seemingly have a quite poor understanding of the history.
This is horrifying. I don't think this should have been presented this way. It's not a soap opera. I can't imagine where you are going with this.
Interesting that the British never apologized for the thousands of women and children that they murdering concentration camps in South Africa during the bore war 0r how people from the Belgium never apologized for the millions of Africans murdered by Belgium citizen in the Congo or the countless thousands who were murdered by poison gas in Lydia and Ethiopia by Italians or even the countless thousand murdered by the French in Algeria
Boer War. There are wars unlimited for everyone to apologise for once one gets started. Nobody’s whole group of ancestors is without guilt for some atrocious behaviour.
Or the Turks for the Armenian genocide. Or the Japanese for the comfort woman. And the list goes on.
Interesting how so many people are attempting to historically revise their family's pasts when they were on the wrong side of history.
When the relatives you remember treated you right but also did historical wrongs, how do you square the circle?
@@roberttfoley Considering these descendants never asked to be born, I don't think they should be responsible for what their ancestors were up to.
@@roberttfoleyadmit to the Truths.....learn from all their bad choices....and be better....let us all move forward in good ways. When folks get stuck in guilt and denial and lies, well, the next generations will have to deal with that messiness. Ever hear "the truth shall set you free" ? That's for real.
What's the wrong side of history?? I think history teaches us we're all imperfect and make mistakes. The learning of history is a teaching tool. So we're supposed to learn from others mistakes. We don't learn if we don't know. 😮
How you turn out has a lot to do with circumstances. Most of us aren’t as squeaky clean as we’d like to think.
I think this is a comedy skit.
I need to get this document translated -i will not use Google I will fly to the other side of the world instead 👍👍👍

Every german that time where in the party…if they where not they had the risk to be persecuted.
Says who? My grandfather was not, his brother was. Once the Nazis came to power in 1933 they even stopped admitting people to the party because they did not want opportunists to join, but then after a while they started admitting again. In 1943 there were 11% of germans in the Party.
Not true. Not every German was in the party. It was less than 10%.
@@resolute1306 The majority of these staff were volunteers. Overall, by 1939, two thirds of the population was signed up to at least one of the Nazi’s mass organisations

Those who know, know .
Chelsea is clearly not very intelligent. Google translate could have taken care of translating the memoir.
And the rough way she was handling that 90 year old book like a pamphlet. Any WW2 enthusiast cringed at that.
And you’re not very intelligent if you do realise it’s just good television. No doubt they already ready knew what it said.

So many people of German origin in the US. German speaking population. was of equal size to the Anglo speakers at some point. So moving to hear the Mahler music in the background . However to justifying Nazism isn't on, it was employment based on rearmament, the persecution of the Jews from 2933 and the steady invasion of foriegn territory from 1936 , and violentation of the Versailles treaty, which in reality was too soft on Germany, but the continuation of tge British royal naval blockade beyond 1918! was barbaric snd inhuman, inspite of extensive German imperial civilian bombing of London
.
Wars are wrong, and the victors write always right the history of wars. Don't have wars. The current offsprings of former warmongers should not have to pay for their ancestors mistakes. They did not ask to be born.
You believe that forcing them to pay reparations until their country is destitute and the people can not afford to eat, was “too soft”? It led directly to the second WW and the deletion of millions of people.
