  • Captain James Cook was not even a Captain when he went on his incredible voyage to discover the 'Great Southern Continent', and he didn't even discover it! How fun! From humble stock, James Cook was promoted to Lieutenant and took the HMS Endeavour on a routine mission to Tahiti to facilitate the observation of the passage of Venus. However, he also had secret orders...to discover a mysterious continent in the South Pacific. What he found wasn't the long imagined continent, but instead found Australia, a discovery which shaped the history of the Pacific forever!
    This video covers:
    1) Why the 'Great Expedition' was launched
    2) Who Captain Cook Was
    3) How Vasco Da Gama made it to Australia
    4) The legacy of the voyage
These videos are made by Andy Hassan as part of the History Blast series. These are meant for educational purposes only.
At the start of the video, I introduced the channel as 'History Bite'. Please note that this is the old name of History Blast, which was changed in August 2021. The use of the name can be attributed to the Trademark 'History Bites', registered to Solomon Schmidt.

Hartog Plate or Dirk Hartog's Plate is either of two pewter plates, although primarily the first, which were left on Dirk Hartog Island during a period of European exploration of the western coast of Australia prior to European settlement there. The first plate, left in 1616 by Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog, is the oldest-known artifact of European exploration in Australia still in existence.

he first documented landing on Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km of coastline.

If anything, it should be the 'First Englishman to Find Australia' since a bunch of Europeans already landed in what is now Australia before Cook did (Janszoon, Vaz de Torres, Tasman, etc...).

    29th April????
19th of April sighting Point Hicks
28th of April ( citation needed) anchored near Thirroul for fresh water .
Dropped anchor in Kamay - Botany Bay later on 29th April
Plus these dates don't account for crossing of the international day line months previously
