I’ve now watched this a couple of times and i think this is one of the best bushcraft vids i’ve ever watched - combines practical reality of useful skills with the techniques you’ll need and interesting charm of delivery. I think this will be a long term keeper. Big fan
What an amazing comment! A very humble but big thank you. These videos are really enjoyable to make and it's nice to hear that they help and are received well. Sorry about the late response but RUclips has a knack for forgetting to notify creators about these things. Thank you for the support and hope you keep enjoying the videos.
This was really excellent and clear instruction on the use of the knife, and the formation of the notches. The camera work and editing was also good. Very clear. Very helpful.
Buenas Noches. Always a good thing to return to as a skill if you've had a challenge elsewhere in bushcraft activities. Fire not starting despite your best efforts? Whittle yourself a notch-stick. Tarp not staying in place or knots just not sitting right? Carve a little stick of notches. Buenas notches everyone.
It's a real treat watching your videos. Joe, your lessons are basic and memorable which (in my opinion) are clear indicators of truly understanding the subject and a skillful teacher. I also really like your constant focus on safety. Excited to participate in one of your courses soon
"Better to be looking at it, then looking for it".... I like that one. I generally go with, " it's better to have and not need, then need and not have", but yeah, I like that one. Great video guys. Keep it up. Cannot remember if you guys have a video about this yet, but tool maintenance would be a great one. Knife, axe, ect. Sharpening, honing, oiling handle and steal, and maybe even sheath care. We all have our choice of knives, but I'm sure there's people here that may learn something to help keep them at 100% and safe.
Thank you brother ! We also agree with you on the basics of maintenance. We posted an in depth stropping video just recently and will be following it up soon. The maintenance are a personally favourite of mine (joe) to make
@inforestsandlands I agree, it's one of my favorite things to do... as I did it with my Nord, Utvær, and Mândra lastnight, lol. Think I have a little love for those Helle's....lol
Jaysus Joe you had me in knots with the chicken dance in the 80s .... memories! Great listening to an Irish accent over mostly Americans on RUclips, you're a treasure trove of information and inspirational in your enthusiastic delivery, I really enjoy your videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge, I am putting together some kit as I am really only starting out with the outdoors but I am grateful for the safety advice as I don't think I would have been careful enough with some of the processes...but listening and watching you has given me a completely different perspective, loved the axe 🪓 videos as well! Go raibh maith agat!
Thanks for sharing! I've been reading Bushcraft 101 but felt I needed a deeper instructional on had to carve notches, this was an excellent guide. Excited to try it myself!!
@kylemartinez6514 awesome ! That is the point of these videos and my field guides as I run in to the same thing with a lot of books. Sometimes you need more than a paragraph and a page for somethings. Good luck and keep chasing the knowledge 🤜🤛
Fantastic demo and some great beginners and intermediate tips there dude. Ps... I nearly did rock it off when you said "rock it off" you sexy bastard you. 😅
Not too bad for a first attempt :) The tip about cutting the ridges was especially useful, as well as the part about using the tip of the knife for fine stuff and the base for heavy carving!
Try sticks are my favorite project for new knives as well, brother! I loved seeing your approach to this and I can't wait to impliment some of your techniques the next time I'm notching up some wood. PS: That Field & Steel blade is just gorgeous! 😍
@jeffreysmall2397 I haven't, brother. I ain't a fan of it personally. With my channel, if I have nothing good to say, I don't say it. Tracker knives aren't bad by any means. I personally just don't get along with em.
The Bob Ross of Bushcraft. Nice and light. Just happy little cuts.
Haha. This comment is definitely getting pinned.
Thanks for this

Cool video, I'm so glad I came across this. Perfect notches to work on when getting a new knife. I mastered quite a few of these with my Esee 6.
