I own dogs and cats. They even get along with each other. The major difference i've noticed is that dogs want to please you while cats want you to please them. Dogs often earn their keep, such as being a security measure, helping out on farms, helping disabled people, and so on. Cats do seem to help with things like stress though.
Some cats even kill bugs and spiders. We had a dog that just freaked out every time it saw a mouse. Though the cat did kill it and give it to me... He seemed very pleased with himself... And very upset when I threw the mouse out...
Mr.Miles Cats domesticated themselves. They found lots of rats in farms so decided to move in and eventually, farmers started having cats to keep the rodent population away from their crops. So in that way.. cats found the motherload where they get fed and have shelter all on their own. While I think dogs were bred and trained to do specific things - it's why some dogs are better at sheep herding than others.
Dogs are the best. I lived on a farm a few years ago, and had two dogs and a cat. They were outdoor animals. The cat tended to stay away, and avoid the house. Sometimes the cat would come, but more likely not. The dogs, however, hovered around the house and we often let them in and petted them. They were more loyal. One day the cat just left. The dogs stayed loyal.

Once we were having the windows in my bathroom replaced and my cat jumped into the back of the van but nobody noticed. Later that day we got a call from the window people saying that a cat, that fit the description of our cat, had jumped out of the van when they opened it back at their store. They said that she'd run off before they could catch her. A few days later I think it was, my cat turned up at home with bleeding paws. She had walked at least 20 miles from a place she'd never been before. 20 freaking miles and she seemed to have found her way home. If that isn't loyalty and intelligence, please, tell me what is.

One time my dog got loose and I was panic stricken, I looked all over the neighborhood but I couldn't find him, I Whistled loud (he knows the tone Is mine and mine alone) not thinking it would work but three seconds later I see him booking towards me from outside my neighborhood. he wasn't joking when he said dogs can hear from long distance
Dogs are definitely more loyal and affectionate. I feel as though cats only hang around you for food where as dogs are always happy to see you and cuddle. Also I don't think I have ever heard of a cat saving somebodies life, I have read so many stories on how a dog has saved a persons life in an emergency situation also by sniffing out cancer. Dogs are so beneficial for people and the community!

one big difference between dogs and cats is that dogs see you as a totally different species, whereas cats think you're a big clumsy kitten. dog's actually get the same feelings we get when we look into their eyes, they're thinking "oh my god that human is so cute and i love them", but cats want to teach you how to be a cat. that's why cats meow at you, a kitten's ears aren't fully developed for a while to be able to sense all the little special frequency purrs cats put out to communicate, so they meow at their kittens to tell them things. cats have special meows for us because we are especially deaf kittens to them. thats also why cats scratch you if you try to pet their bellies when they're on their side, they're trying to teach you how to fight. they bring you half-dead prey to try to teach you how to kill, or they bring you their toys if you don't let your cat outside. and for the record, cats are smart too. i have an old, fat cat named emmy, and my mom taught her how to high-five. my cat chessie taught himself how to play fetch and he knows his name too. my other cats are relatively stupid though, it depends on the cat. btw i love both cats and dogs so don't assume i'm a cat person because i wrote a mini essay on why cats do weird things.
My cat does what your cat does but every morning and if i say i dont feel safe to her she comes and guards me. She only does it to me and if i were to scream she runs to me really quickly meowing.
Dogs! They're so loving, cuddle with you when you cry. Go on hikes and adventures with them they do there own thing and always stay around. My dog is so athletic and literally sprints around the house like a crazy but it's adorable. He also sleeps on his back and can stand on his 2 back legs. Why compare though rather just love and appreciate them both.
when I cry my puppy wants to play more and starts biting my toes :/ but same, my dog is also very athletic, goes psycho puppy way too much and can also stand on his back legs lol. I my cat is a basically a dog, he has the mind of a dog - he will follow me everywhere and when I’m upset he will come and sit/lie down with me if I’m ill he will stay with me every second until I’m better, and when he brings in a dead animal- he sits by it proudly. When I say to him, I’m going to bed now he will raise his head and look at me , when I look up the stairs he’s all ready on my bed 💖💖 he even goes on the trampoline with me - I love him so much 💞💞💞💞💞💖💖🤣

Honestly it just all depends on the individual, both human and animal. Like for me I prefer dogs but I met this cat who I absolutely FELL IN LOVE WITH. Every individual is different. So some cats have traits that I like while some cat lovers might not find those traits as endearing. It really depends on both person and animal and since no two humans or cats and dogs are the same, it really all depends.

Ok so the whole thing that your dog doesn't actually feel guilt is SOOOO not true. The story is: we never really feed our dog anything off of the table and she only gets dog food and occasionally dog treats. So anyway, on thanksgiving one year we gave her some left over turkey and dripped gravy all over it, and it was a reasonable sized hunk. We thought she'd be really happy about it because she never gets that kind of thing. But instead, she hid behind the couch and didn't come out for a few hours because she thought that she did something wrong. It was really sad but still really cute. We tried to convince her that she didn't actually do anything wrong, by petting her and saying nice things to her "Oh I love you so much Daisy, you're such a good girl! But she still stayed behind the couch and wouldn't play with the other dogs. Like she was punishing herself. This also isn't the only time that happened. Another time, when she was a smol little puppy, she unraveled/ate the toilet paper roll (luckily it was almost empty) but neither my mom or I was home. When we came home, we saw toilet paper everywhere and Daisy was just sitting in my room behind my bed looking guilty. This has also happened a few other times when she chewed a hole in the hose, or knocked over the bird feeder, and another time when I gave her a pop tart. So it wasn't like a one time thing. I know not a lot of people are going to see this or read it all the way through, and that this isn't like a scientific experiment with laboratory conditions or anything, but I just wanted to say thats what happened, so either MY dog gets guilty, or all dogs get guilty. This is just my story of my dog and I just wanted to share it in case anyone cared.

If you have the room, you should get both! I had both a dog and a cat and they never hurt each other. The dog, despite being about three times as big as the cat, never once hurt him. He was very gentle with the cat, and they loved to play with eachother. It was very cute. If you want them to get along it is best to get them when they're both little babies.

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats and am also a preschool teacher with all the kids in my class being under 18 months of age. Cats, dogs and babies all communicate mostly by nonverbal vocalizations and body language. Intellectually, dogs don't progress past the level of a 4y/o human. Cats are pretty close to that as well. This means they are all capable of making generalizations, finding cause and effect relationships, and understanding why they shouldn't do some things. My big dog is 8y/o and has a habit of stealing candy. If I ask who took something, he will hide. A 4y/o child doesn't understand the concept of being guilty or ashamed, however they do understand doing something they have been taught is wrong and will mimic what they see from adults in those situations, same as cats and dogs.
My big dog is an 85lb pit bull. We took care of a friends cats for a few weeks when he was a year old. After that, he would cry if he saw a cat, acting very sad, and begging as he did for food. We got a cat a few months later. She is in no way peaceful (beats up her baby brother, a 16lb Pomeranian/chihuahua and my mom's Berger Picard). Each individual animal is going to show different characteristics. Both of my cats are female black long hairs. One wears a harness because of severe spacial anxiety (same reason behind why compression clothing and weight vests help calm some children with autism). The other doesn't have an anxiety. Both are rescues. The harness wearing one was about 8-10 weeks when she was taken in as a stray, the other 5y/o and set to be put down. The younger cat prefers the dogs and chickens in the family (her best friend is a Cornish cross rooster named Duke) to the other cats. Comparing cats and dogs is like apples and oranges. In actuality, there is no way of quantifying traits in a way that can make a valid argument on one being better than the other. Cats and dogs are both pets and big parts of a lot of people's lives. Apples and oranges are just types of fruit, which will all have our own preferences
People, if you want to have an opinion on which one is better, consider this. Have you ever had both pets? If you have and still prefer one or the other, than good for you. I volunteer at an animal shelter and our job is generally to clean the cat room. I can tell you that after socializing many of the cats, it's not rare to pet one that's purring only for them to swipe at you the next instance (even though I was petting them the exact same way). Well, it is up to you. I simply choose to have my cat indoors because I want my cat to be safe and healthy from unknown places. And I am very sure that a cat would be o.k. and fine with being indoors......because they are mostly smaller and less energetic than dogs, and if they do want to hunt, play with them for an hour or two.

I personally like cats more because unlike some dogs they'll actually attack small animals and we all know the next best thing stands still and uses food to lure their bait in... mouse traps, and i believe people with cats have a less likely chance to die during night, night just so happens to be about the same time most people die in thier sleep. I don't feel as though this was very "scientifically" argued. The points brought up were mostly those of favouritism. Like a song being written for a dog and how dogs are used for saving people. Dogs are used in place of cats because a lot of people seem to not understand that it's easy to train a cat, you just have to start young because otherwise the cat won't understand what you're trying to do. A cat is more likely to stare at your finger than what you're pointing at because it would rather be pet and embraced.

I like both, but cats act like teenagers, thinking they own the world, and are unpredictable. One wrong move and they attack you without showing why. Dogs bark at least and are very loyal to their owners.
Douglas Aranda Cats do have warning signs. We just don't notice it or mistaken it for dog happy signs. A wagging tail = I'm about to get angry. Dilated eyes = I'm about to pounce on you. Cats are a newer domesticated species than dogs so they still have much of their wild instincts and they aren't usually bred specifically for behaviour traits but rather for appearance.

Most cats are shy, cuddly, or reserved and stay that way, but my cat can literally cuddle you one moment and ferociously attack you the next. Even then, my family and I can tell his intentions. For example, a wagging tail, unmoving stare and fast blinks means that an attack is inbound, whereas a raised, curved tail, slow blinks and slowly shifting gaze means he's relaxed.This more or less goes for most cats. They're not that unpredictable. Of course, if you think that a cat is going to use the same signals as a dog, you're going to have more than a few scratches.You should also keep in mind that you should treat a cat more like a human than a dog. They, like all humans, don't appreciate being petted when they don't want to, and yes, they do send signals. All you really need to do is give them space (or cuddle if they're the cuddly type), and you'll be friends in no time.
Douglas Aranda I think you don't treat cats correct. Nor do you even understand them. "thinking they own the world" very much a stereotype much the same as "cats will one day rule the world". You need to show the cat enough affection for it to care about you. It's not as simple as giving him a treat and then being its best friend. It's also very obvious why a cat hits you. If it hits you, remember the last thing you did last to him. Aka belly rubbing, or approaching it whilst it's lowering itself and its ears are down.
I think the introvert part is quite accurate. I'm very introverted and I prefer cats a lot more. Cats are very independent but they sometimes want to cuddle and most of the times, they want gentle scratches whereas dogs are always running around and wanting scrubs. I was watching this video because one of my relatives got 2 dogs a few months ago and it's just incredible how hard it is to keep up with them now that I'm staying with her for a few weeks. They pee and poo everywhere. Then again, they are young but even if they do their stuff on the mat, we still have to clean it up constantly. As well as that, they stink quite a bit ngl. I just can't imagine how some people find owning dogs to be stress-relieving. I feel like the biggest difference between dogs and cats is the way they show affection. Dogs lick you, run to you, want scrubs, climb up on you, bark. Instead, cats brush themselves against your foot, purr or climb up on you. This is why I prefer having a cat way more. It's not like I hate dogs or anything. It's just that they're hard to take care of and they wouldn't be a good companion to suit my personality.

Dogs are the best. I lived on a farm a few years ago, and had two dogs and a cat. They were outdoor animals. The cat tended to stay away, and avoid the house. Sometimes the cat would come, but more likely not. The dogs, however, hovered around the house and we often let them in and petted them. They were more loyal. One day the cat just left. The dogs stayed loyal.

Once we were having the windows in my bathroom replaced and my cat jumped into the back of the van but nobody noticed. Later that day we got a call from the window people saying that a cat, that fit the description of our cat, had jumped out of the van when they opened it back at their store. They said that she'd run off before they could catch her. A few days later I think it was, my cat turned up at home with bleeding paws. She had walked at least 20 miles from a place she'd never been before. 20 freaking miles and she seemed to have found her way home. If that isn't loyalty and intelligence, please, tell me what is.

Dogs are definitely more loyal and affectionate. I feel as though cats only hang around you for food where as dogs are always happy to see you and cuddle. Also I don't think I have ever heard of a cat saving somebodies life, I have read so many stories on how a dog has saved a persons life in an emergency situation also by sniffing out cancer. Dogs are so beneficial for people and the community!

one big difference between dogs and cats is that dogs see you as a totally different species, whereas cats think you're a big clumsy kitten. dog's actually get the same feelings we get when we look into their eyes, they're thinking "oh my god that human is so cute and i love them", but cats want to teach you how to be a cat. that's why cats meow at you, a kitten's ears aren't fully developed for a while to be able to sense all the little special frequency purrs cats put out to communicate, so they meow at their kittens to tell them things. cats have special meows for us because we are especially deaf kittens to them. thats also why cats scratch you if you try to pet their bellies when they're on their side, they're trying to teach you how to fight. they bring you half-dead prey to try to teach you how to kill, or they bring you their toys if you don't let your cat outside.
and for the record, cats are smart too. i have an old, fat cat named emmy, and my mom taught her how to high-five. my cat chessie taught himself how to play fetch and he knows his name too. my other cats are relatively stupid though, it depends on the cat.

Honestly it just all depends on the individual, both human and animal. Like for me I prefer dogs but I met this cat who I absolutely FELL IN LOVE WITH. Every individual is different. So some cats have traits that I like while some cat lovers might not find those traits as endearing. It really depends on both person and animal and since no two humans or cats and dogs are the same, it really all depends.

Ok so the whole thing that your dog doesn't actually feel guilt is SOOOO not true. The story is: we never really feed our dog anything off of the table and she only gets dog food and occasionally dog treats. So anyway, on thanksgiving one year we gave her some left over turkey and dripped gravy all over it, and it was a reasonable sized hunk. We thought she'd be really happy about it because she never gets that kind of thing. But instead, she hid behind the couch and didn't come out for a few hours because she thought that she did something wrong. It was really sad but still really cute. We tried to convince her that she didn't actually do anything wrong, by petting her and saying nice things to her "Oh I love you so much Daisy, you're such a good girl! But she still stayed behind the couch and wouldn't play with the other dogs. Like she was punishing herself. This also isn't the only time that happened. Another time, when she was a smol little puppy, she unraveled/ate the toilet paper roll (luckily it was almost empty) but neither my mom or I was home. When we came home, we saw toilet paper everywhere and Daisy was just sitting in my room behind my bed looking guilty. This has also happened a few other times when she chewed a hole in the hose, or knocked over the bird feeder, and another time when I gave her a pop tart. So it wasn't like a one time thing. I know not a lot of people are going to see this or read it all the way through, and that this isn't like a scientific experiment with laboratory conditions or anything, but I just wanted to say thats what happened, so either MY dog gets guilty, or all dogs get guilty. This is just my story of my dog and I just wanted to share it in case anyone cared.

If you have the room, you should get both! I had both a dog and a cat and they never hurt each other. The dog, despite being about three times as big as the cat, never once hurt him. He was very gentle with the cat, and they loved to play with eachother. It was very cute. If you want them to get along it is best to get them when they're both little babies.

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats and am also a preschool teacher with all the kids in my class being under 18 months of age. Cats, dogs and babies all communicate mostly by nonverbal vocalizations and body language. Intellectually, dogs don't progress past the level of a 4y/o human. Cats are pretty close to that as well. This means they are all capable of making generalizations, finding cause and effect relationships, and understanding why they shouldn't do some things. My big dog is 8y/o and has a habit of stealing candy. If I ask who took something, he will hide. A 4y/o child doesn't understand the concept of being guilty or ashamed, however they do understand doing something they have been taught is wrong and will mimic what they see from adults in those situations, same as cats and dogs.
My big dog is an 85lb pit bull. We took care of a friends cats for a few weeks when he was a year old. After that, he would cry if he saw a cat, acting very sad, and begging as he did for food. We got a cat a few months later. She is in no way peaceful (beats up her baby brother, a 16lb Pomeranian/chihuahua and my mom's Berger Picard).
Each individual animal is going to show different characteristics. Both of my cats are female black long hairs. One wears a harness because of severe spacial anxiety (same reason behind why compression clothing and weight vests help calm some children with autism). The other doesn't have an anxiety. Both are rescues. The harness wearing one was about 8-10 weeks when she was taken in as a stray, the other 5y/o and set to be put down. The younger cat prefers the dogs and chickens in the family (her best friend is a Cornish cross rooster named Duke) to the other cats. Comparing cats and dogs is like apples and oranges. In actuality, there is no way of quantifying traits in a way that can make a valid argument on one being better than the other. Cats and dogs are both pets and big parts of a lot of people's lives. Apples and oranges are just types of fruit, which will all have our own preferences
People, if you want to have an opinion on which one is better, consider this. Have you ever had both pets? If you have and still prefer one or the other, than good for you. But if you've only had a cat/dog in your life, then how the fuck do you know what it's like having either pet?? Stereotypes aren't a good excuse for it. So stfu until you actually decide to try to look after a pet puppy or cat and realise which one is harder to care for.

I volunteer at an animal shelter and our job is generally to clean the cat room. I can tell you that after socializing many of the cats, it's not rare to pet one that's purring only for them to swipe at you the next instance (even though I was petting them the exact same way). I dislike having a pet that could suddenly hurt me

My dog is my ESA. The greatest gift that has ever been given to me. My husband got a dog (for himself and to keep my dog company) And now, sometimes, he wishes he had gotten a cat. He's an introvert, doesn't like people. Whereas I love to meet people and just talk. That has to speak volumes about how people choose between the two.

Well, it is up to you. I simply choose to have my cat indoors because I want my cat to be safe and healthy from unknown places. And I am very sure that a cat would be o.k. and fine with being indoors......because they are mostly smaller and less energetic than dogs, and if they do want to hunt, play with them for an hour or two.

I personally like cats more because unlike some dogs they'll actually attack small animals and we all know the next best thing stands still and uses food to lure their bait in... mouse traps, and i believe people with cats have a less likely chance to die during night, night just so happens to be about the same time most people die in thier sleep. BTW i dont mean by killers ... cats have no chance againest a actually murderer....

Coming home: Being pounded and demanding attention WHILST barking. Whereas cats, doorbell: idgaf. Car: idgaf. Other cat: scratch the living crap out of it. Coming home: meow or idgaf.

I have multiple cats, and multiple dogs, and in my opinion I think it really depends on the animals that you get, because ours all get along fine and sometimes they barely even seem like separate species, they're also cats and dogs that rub up on each other and don't get along at all. I don't feel as though this was very "scientifically" argued. The points brought up were mostly those of favouritism. Like a song being written for a dog and how dogs are used for saving people. Dogs are used in place of cats because a lot of people seem to not understand that it's easy to train a cat, you just have to start young because otherwise the cat won't understand what you're trying to do. A cat is more likely to stare at your finger than what you're pointing at because it would rather be pet and embraced.

Cats can be trained, and ive even seen amazing videos of cats doing agility and clicker training just like a dog, but no matter what you do, cats wont, for the most part, be as intense as dogs. dogs have a huge drive to work in packs, to please the leader, so theyre more reliable if you have a good dog with lots of drive. The huge drive to please is what makes dogs used more often in training.
while that's great and all, none of that should matter while "scientifically" discussing which is better.
well, the facts dogs are both natural pack animals and trained specifically to be obedient and listen to you through their history is scientific enough that its in their DNA to follow orders from the pack.

i was responding to that specific part of the comment more, as it was very factually incorrect, and i was trying to use practical examples to show you.

Douglas Aranda Cats do have warning signs. We just don't notice it or mistaken it for dog happy signs. A wagging tail = I'm about to get angry. Dilated eyes = I'm about to pounce on you.

Douglas Aranda I think you don't treat cats correct. Nor do you even understand them. "thinking they own the world" very much a stereotype much the same as "cats will one day rule the world". You need to show the cat enough affection for it to care about you. It's not as simple as giving him a treat and then being its best friend. It's also very obvious why a cat hits you. If it hits you, remember the last thing you did last to him. Aka belly rubbing, or approaching it whilst it's lowering itself and its ears are down.
I think the introvert part is quite accurate. I'm very introverted and I prefer cats a lot more. Cats are very independent but they sometimes want to cuddle and most of the times, they want gentle scratches whereas dogs are always running around and wanting scrubs. I was watching this video because one of my relatives got 2 dogs a few months ago and it's just incredible how hard it is to keep up with them now that I'm staying with her for a few weeks. They pee and poo everywhere. Then again, they are young but even if they do their stuff on the mat, we still have to clean it up constantly. As well as that, they stink quite a bit ngl. I just can't imagine how some people find owning dogs to be stress-relieving. I feel like the biggest difference between dogs and cats is the way they show affection. Dogs lick you, run to you, want scrubs, climb up on you, bark. Instead, cats brush themselves against your foot, purr or climb up on you. This is why I prefer having a cat way more. It's not like I hate dogs or anything. It's just that they're hard to take care of and they wouldn't be a good companion to suit my personality.
